Does Windows 10 really perform better than Windows 7 or is it just a hoax? I don't know if it was placebo, but Windows 7 with classic theme felt way faster.

I feel it to be snappier than 7 but yeah it might be just placebo.
i only run windows in VMs to access Visio but my new Win10 VM runs like shit compared to my win7 VM with the same specs assigned.
It all depends on the hardware. Older stuff, hell no! Something new and "designed for it", it CAN run incredibly well on. Can.
Mine felt faster for about 6 months then started to feel like dogshit. This is on a computer I built only a year and a half ago. Based anniversary update.

More smooth animations, fastboot which is pretty much hibernate because since 8.1 windows doesn't turn your PC off anymore and better RAM management.
Other than that, is the same.

Pretty much this. Did the same and finally got a nice laptop about 10 months ago. Ran well-ish for 6 months and then the Anniversary update hit.
Then it all went to hell, slowed to a crawl and shit started crashing. Wiped it and reinstalled windows, but it was still shit, just with less application crashes. Still failed to update every time they were sent out.
Heard all the update problems lately are still atrocious, so I just have it shelved for now. University PCs are still on 7 with a fuckton of software loaded up, so I can live with that.

I think it's smoother. Plus DX12. But if you don't game it's not a whole lot of difference overall. Programs work, the OS isn't that much different

And I installed it on my laptop and desktop. Both have SSDs and are basically never slow. But if you have a Hard Drive still (for some reason) some people have reported slowdowns after the Anniversary update.

It's garbage compared to 7. Even the little advantages it has are overtaken by 3rd party software. Microsoft fucked up with 10.
