Very useful in video editing, and everything that has to do with numbers.
I wouldn't want to miss it, but maybe have it in a different spot.

In overall there are many useless keys on a standart qwerty keyboard.

>roll
>page up and down
>end
>home

All these kinda keys could maybe be put on the top of the keyboard in small form factor. I'd rather have a tall/deep keyboard than a wide one.

I'm gonna buy it the same day it's out. Seriously, fuck QWERTY keyboards, right side numpads, mice and whatever, they're unergonomic as fuck. Especially the keyboards: who the fuck ever thought that maintaining the same design of the old as fuck typewriters would be a good idea?

You know what's more painful than swiveling your elbow?

Doing math on a computer without a numpad
>>
>>57136721
Biomechanics are incredibly important for overall health and function of your body.

You may think that an awkward angle has no bearing on your future health. But prolonged use of biomechanically unsound practices can lead to discomfort, pain and even disease.

Keep this in mind, it may seem like a pussy way to go about doing things, but your future self will thank you.

What problem, the numpad running into the mouse? I've never had that be an issue, but try a keyboard with no numpad, or numpad on the left.

And while you're at it, get one of those obnoxious curved keyboards and laugh maniacally when you let anyone who isn't a touchtyper else use it.

aka have a hobby that's not sitting down at a computer or just strech every 45 mins like the advisories say

even if they could invent a keyboard one could use for infinite hours in a row it would not be as bad as the habits surrounding constant computer use anyways

Page Up and Page Down became obsolete with the invention of the mouse wheel. Home and End are at least SOMEWHAT useful if you need to quickly scroll to the bottom/top of something huge, but you can probably do without them.

I have a keyboard with a standard numpad, but I really wish I'd gotten one without a numpad so I could use a left hand numpad. It's too late at this point unless I want to dump another ~$100 on another fucking mechanical keyboard.

Easy (>implying anyone will fucking do this shit)
>remove numpad from keyboard, sell as separate accessory so it can be placed by the user on the non-dominant side opposite of the mouse
>OPTIONAL: turn numpad into a general chording-device instead of a number-specific entry device, already going that way with numpads doubling as directional keys, home/end/pgup/pgdown
>move "command" buttons like CTRL, ALT, FN, to a strip beneath the space bar so they can be activated with the thumbs
>better yet, get rid of the space bar entirely and turn it into that "command strip" where there are two symmetrical spacebuttons a la alt/alt-gr
>stop laying out keys in a perfectly geometrical grid that does not at all reflect the actual geometry of the human hand
There's nothing stopping any of these things from being implemented besides the fact that it creates "weird-looking keyboards". Hell, even Microsoft sells keyboards like this now.

On the software side:
>have programs actually use the Menu/App key between Alt & Ctrl
>have programs use the F1-F12 keys
That way you don't have to do shit tons of key-chording to access common things, which fucks up your wrists and hands.

Look closer. Her hands are at the same position. The on the left keyboard has to be pushed further to the right for her hands to be on the homerow. The keyboard on the right has a numpad on the left, so it's actually "centered" in front of the monitor. In both sets of pictures her hands are in the same position in front of her and on the same row of keys.
>>
I actually use the numpad at work, as do many others that use a computer at work.

Not everyone is MUH AESTHETICS or worries about an angle. If you are worried about an angle, post some sources on proper documentation as to why it's not desirable from a physical health standpoint.
>>
>>57140185
Nobody's advocating permanently removing the numpad lad, just moving it to the opposite side where's it not in the way.
>>
>>57140184
is there a significant ergonomic reason for why it'd be a bad idea to simply have the white keyboard further to the left though? It just seems like there's so much unused space on the left, and I can't imagine people would actually be placing their keyboards in this manner if they're not paying close attention to where the homerow is relative to the monitor, as you just pointed out.
>>
>>57136492
either go tenkeyless, or use the god given trackpoint placed convniently within the homerow.
>>
Trackpoint/trackpad/trackball in the center of the keyboard (home row or below spacebar) fixes OP's nonexistent problem.

>>
>>57136492
This would easily be fixed by moving the numpad to the left of the keyboard.

I don't know why this hasn't happened yet.... but it needs to.

Not only would it center your hands, but it'd also allow faster access to the numpad (no needing to take hand off mouse)

dumbass, don't underestimate the toll of operating technology that isn't designed ergonomically over a long period of time. i know many people suffering permanent damage from carpal tunnel syndrome. i even have wrist strain from usage for such a long time.
>>
>>57140220
>is there a significant ergonomic reason for why it'd be a bad idea to simply have the white keyboard further to the left though?

Because then your hands would be angled to the left...?

>>
>>57140220
The ideal keyboard placement (that is, the one that is least likely to cause RSI in the wrist or elbow) has the middle of the homerow directly in front of the middle of your chest.
The ideal position for the mouse (same criteria) is directly in front of your dominant hand's shoulder.

>>57136492
Go look at /bst/ or /mkg/ sometime. 60% keyboards, which don't even have the function row, much less the numpad or navigation cluster, seem to be the majority in both.

I like the numpad, but I like not having to turn my arm out more, so I bought a cheap accessory one that I move into position as necessary, to go with my old TKL (ten-key-less) Model M.
If this thing ever craps out on me I'm going to have to buy a new keyboard from Unicomp and literally saw off the numpad.
>>
It's called trackpoint.
>>
>>57140911
Jokes aside, I normally blindtype on my smartphone. Ain't that hard.
>>
numpad should be on left
I either have to move my left hand from the home row to the right of the keyboard or take my hand off the mouse in order to use the numpad which is fucking retarded

if the numpad was on left I could easily access it at all times with my left hand

the numpad is actually useful for me
>>
>>57136492

To pretty much anyone complaining about layouts and how you have a perfect idea to fix everything, make a keyboard with that layout. It's not particularly hard.

Move Numpad to the left.
Alternatively, drop the mouse. It's no use in text-hey environments.

A made a typo. In such an important place, too.

But yeah, obviously there is an advantage about using the numpad with your dominant hand. You already do that with your calculator.
>>
>>57145609
We can type just fine with the left hand. Using a numpad with it isn't a problem.
>>
>>57145637
But has to be re-learned. I was able to touch-type fast with the numpad without even practicing.

Also, I just noticed you'd have to place the +, - and 'Enter' button on the left, too. Not that that'd be an issue, but most separate numpads (e.g. >>57136551) don't do that.

Try this:
Center just the letter keyes of a full size keyboard with your monitor.
It should be so that the the space key is centered with your monitor and when you put your index fingers on F and J both of your hands should be at the same angle.

Now try to use your mouse. I will be far more to the right and your arm will be at an akward angle.
