Is there any real use for military-grade cryptography besides covering up criminal activity?
All encryption is military grade
Well all encryption that works

Covering up FROM criminals
Covering up FROM industrial espionage hackers

Probably talking about generic "encryption" program that comes with phones/facebook apps/windows OS, etc. These are "civilian" aka already backdoored/weak/unsecure and not safe for anything other than protection from regular people.

For false sense of security. Most people fall for it and are happy about it, given the current debate about encryption and the dangers surrounding it. Give the mass a fake/weak encryption and they will be happy

Yes.
Covering up a giant pile of randomly generated junk data so the police and government can be suspicious, so they can allege crime is being covered up, so i can counter-sue them for defamation, and destruction by acting as if that junk data was originally legit and the police ruined it out of incompetence or bad intentions.

Encryption is useful for me for securing laptops that I carry with me. I meet with clients, and I certainly don't want customer data to fall into those hands who might do them harm.
SSL protects most financial transactions, and I certainly wouldn't want my credit card info, social security, etc to belong in some criminals hands.

Military 'grade' doesn't exist.

it does in a sense, just not the sense that people use. It typically means that they meet or exceed some testing procedures that incedentially the military also uses

There is no such thing. The military uses civilian grade cryptography. AES and RSA are civilian grade, because they were designed for and have widespread use among civilians.
>>57113430
>Why would the government spy on its own citizens?
Anon, I know you want to seem like the voice of reason here, denying what you perceive to be conspiracy theories, but the US government has already been demonstrated to not only be spying on its own citizens, but even on its own legislators, and on allying countries.
>>57118702
This, the NSA wants to bring about jewish communism or even something far worse.
>>57113346
>Is there any real use for military-grade cryptography besides covering up criminal activity?
Weak cryptography is useless. So the only real cryptography is what's "military grade" - i.e., the current state of the art algorithms.

I am always confused by this bizarre argument.
If you dont believe that basic privacy is enough of a reason then post full nude photos of yourself, with face, and name/address/etc, right now. Post your name and your biggest personal secrets. Add the worst thing youve said about someone behind their back, and copy it to them. Post your salary and copy it to all your coworkers. Post details of every minor illegal thing that you've heard your friends of family have ever done. If you say "but its only LE and I trust them" then just send all those things to your local, state, and federal police. Do it!
People always say "I have nothing to hide" and then refuse to do these things. I find it really confusing. Privacy is a reasonable thing to have in a free society.
