Practically?
Long shelf life - 1TB HDD from G-Tech, (or HGST in an enclosure you buy yourself)
Performance (no more than 3 months in cold storage) - Any external SSD
Buy an 850 Evo and put it in a metal hard drive enclosure

Dont SSDs have longer shelf lives than hdds by default?

A HDD can theoretically work for more or less forever whereas a SSD has a more apparent lifespan.
That said, PRACTICALLY, most people will see little to no difference and it will be entirely up to how lucky you are with the specific one you buy. "Maximum lifespan" shouldn't be considered -- you'll experience some sort of failure or replace the drive far before then.

Hard drives. External will probably be most cost efficient, but an internal plus enclosure is great -- doesn't really matter which you get though, if you're willing to pay, you can get better quality and warranty from internals.
