Anyone here has installed i3 on arch?
I follow the wiki religiously but this happens when I try to startx.
Please help, I don't know what I may be doing wrong.
Show your .xinitrc
Use a display manager

Thanks for responding: here's it
1/2
2/2
As you can see, I've added the 'exec i3'
>>57082859
Do you recommend me doing this? If so, what display manager?
You'd be better off using i3 on top of XFCE
>>57082882
try commenting out the lines before exec i3. I don't thinking you're supposed to have multiple execs in your config.
>>57082911
And what about Gnome with i3? Although I've already tried it with the gnome-i3 package from AUR and it didn't work
>>57082911
why not LXDE?
>>57082921
I've done that, the same error pops up
>>57082931
>>57082932
It's just that I had little to no issue getting i3 to work with xfce, so I would recommend it. It would definitely work with other DE's but if you're looking for minimalism, maybe Gnome isn't the way to go

Please be fair, I know I'm noob as fuck but I'm trying to learn (I've spent like 12 hours minimum since two days ago trying to install arch).
Do I need to add my user to the video group then? How would I do that?
>>57082994
No, he's just memeing you.
>>57083017
Oh ok.
Do you guys have any other idea about what could I do?
>>57083033
Have you installed the proper graphics packages, nvidia etc.?

>>57083069
Yes, and I've previously installed Gnome and it worked perfectly.
>>57083083
What do you mean?
>>57082813
What video driver did you install?
>>57083099
Remove everything but (exec i3) from xinitrc pleb
>>57082813
Use a display manager like gdm.
>>57082813
Can you post the log file its mentioning?
>>57082813
Also did you "sudo startx"? it seems to be complaining about permissions.
>>57083112
xf86-video-intel (Im on a thinkpad x220)
>>57083122
Ok, I will try that
>>57083115
I've tried that and still doesn't work
>>57083137
lol.
This worked. Even though I've tried to run startx as root before and it didn't work.
>>57083153
Yeah I installed arch for the first time a few weeks ago. Had been using xubuntu for years and some fedora.
I had the exact same issue. After swapping drivers and making sure to use sudo everything worked. Enjoy!
>>57083137
>sudo startx
This is not safe and should never be needed.
Your .Xauthority file is probably fucked up.
>>57083636
I just had to do it one though. Now I can startx with my user, normally.
>>57082867
>>57082882
Use Vim
>>57082813
Reboot, log in as the regular user then try again. startx /usr/bin/i3
copy xinitrc from /etc/x11/xinit or something to ~/.xinitrc
add exec i3 at the bottom
startx
or you have not installed xorg-xinit
>arch
you didn't install gentoo. that's the issue.
