AHAHAAHAHAHA. Guess what, faggots? I just bought a server...

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

AHAHAAHAHAHA. Guess what, faggots?

I just bought a server... for $135:
>DUAL (That's right, you nerds) X5460 #4-core 3.16GHz Processors
>5x150GB 10K RPM Hard Drives
>P400 Raid Controller
>14GB of DDR2-667Mhz RAM
>2 Redundant PSUs
>2 gigabit Ethernet NIC
>1 Fiber NIC

UMAD!? Yeah, UMAD!?

This BEAST will run modern titles with a decent GPU
The RAM is so cheap I could buy 64GB tomorrow and put my entire operating system and game off of it. Yeah, fuck your SSD, nerd.

That's a fairly good deal for $135, it's just a shame that you're not going to leverage those dual processors and you're stuck on DDR2 and SATA2. It's going to be shit for anything resembling modern games and it is massively power hungry.

If anything I would suggest you just take out the xeons and bin them, throw in the cheapest low power CPUs compatible and RAID up some 2TB drives to make a decent NAS.

if you would be in EU, sure thats okay at best

but with america prices, thats too expensive and that uses way too much power, since it seems to be a G5 HP, not to mention it will be fucking noisy

so pretty bad deal there desu, coming from a guy running two equivalent dells, do not get G5 ProLiants or equivalent models from other manufacturers

they are simply old, slow, noisy, power inefficient. i only run these kinds of servers just because they are all i have

always aim for G6 or higher at minimum

>>
>>57069410
Owner of DL380G5 here.
Put a GPU in it and use a long HDMI cable if you want a passthrough.
Put it in another room far away and run your HDMI over of use a remote viewer.
Do NOT plug it in if you are going to leave it idle and off. The cruddy efficiency PSUs get hot even when powered off and can kill themselves because they can't turn on their fans to save themselves while it's powered down.

The P400 raid controller is complete shit and if the battery is dead, expect the caching off work around to drop your safe sequential write to throttle like a roller coaster to around 8MB/s. Replace this immediately with a cheap JBOD controller for freeNAS or Linux with ZoL.

People buy complete servers and strip them for parts to sell with more markup. It's much cheaper to buy 5+ year old, complete servers that came out of some business/institution that's upgrading.

You really just have to set a price range and scour whatever website is popular in your area for selling used goods. It took me hours of searching before

>>57070234
Thanks. I noticed some residual heat in the PSU.

Re-sell the hdds if you can. Any SSD is faster. A single 3TB hdd has more space.

I am curious: what is the use case?

>>57069939
Not mad but jelly as fok

Unlike op's system it's actually usable for a whole range of things.
>>
>>57070215
Absolutely.
You will lose ECC support, any semblance of decent software logical volume & RAID management, generally have a loud af desktop PC, it will heat the room to sweltering temperatures in under an hour.

The only positive is parts are cheap. A modern Dell poweredge or some shit: Lose a PSU and blow your redundancy but stay afloat.
Now spend 100-200 USD on a new one.
This server is 10 bucks a piece for any part of outdated hardware.

>>57070286
If you can live with letting your data be handled by a black box that performs damn fine and offloads work, you can get a hardware RAID/ volume manager other than the P400 in it.
Make damn sure it has good reviews and dig into any issue you find about a hardware controller.
If you prefer everything running open source software at the cost of a few CPU cycles you can get a cheap 3Gb/s Dell SAS 6iR and flash it to IT mode and use it as a $5 JBOD with your flavor of file system.

It completely depends want you want it for

Don't listen to buttmad faggots complaining because they're using newer tech that cost them $1K or someone who "just works in a data centre and got it free from my uncle".

These prices were incredibly good for my country without any acquaintances or pulled strings. I'm primarily going to use it for practicing network admin and switching and if I don't want to do the work at college I actually need a computer to fuck with for my course. I'm going to test out different distros on it and practice a bunch of IT networking crap since that's the career path I'm leaning towards. I can also use it for basic security testing to a degree that virtual machines don't offer.

As far as personal use goes I'll put in a GPU that doesn't require additional power and use it to render videos or maybe play warband or some of the games my laptop couldn't run for the past 3 years.

You can buy DL380 G6s for less than you bought that piece of crap for. Maybe not in your shit country, but definitely in America.

For less than 1k you can even get lower spec DL380 G8s.

Right now I'm waiting on the right deal on a Dell Precision T7600 to come up. I want to get one built with the dual e5-2670s for less than $700 if I can. I'll probably have to wait until one comes up with two of the lesser CPUs and then do the upgrade myself, and sell the excess hardware. If I can find one with a decent Quadro in it I can sell that for a little bit too to offset costs.

I know I could go for the T5600 and get identical performance for less, but I just don't want to. I want the big one.

Not OP. I need a closet server for fucking around with oracle sql dba shit.

Would like to just build it as a vm server puppet if possible and then use each vm as I need. Hell even installing different operating systems would be good for practice installing the databases.

I have a freenas server but its on a amd 8 core embedded thing. Good for my personal freenas and plex plus whatever scripts I have in jails but I am afraid actually running sizable queries will make it choke.

What should I be on the lookout for hardware and price wise /g/?

No, because your modern video games aren't made to be played with 8 cores. In this day and age, you're still lucky if the game you're playing will even utilize 4 cores.
And that's ignoring that all 8 of your cores combined can only just barely keep up with a single previous generation quad-core i5 without hyperthreading.

It's a useful machine, but not for your gaymez.
