Apple is hiring a lot of talent from British chip designer Imagination Technologies, the company that providesthe graphics processorfor the iPhone 7.
Apple confirmed in Marchthrough the London Stock Exchange that it had discussions to buy Imagination Technologies but that it ultimately did not make an offer for the chip company.

Well, this means MIPS might as well be effectively dead with almost no talent working on it now seeing as Apple is just going to have the talent design better versions of their custom ARM chip.
Now I can only hope RISC-V has a chance of saving us all from custom ISA hell.

It's not a bad ISA by any means and certainly better than the dominant ARM and x86-64 but it's still not as good as RISC-V. Unfortunately, RISC-V isn't quite ready yet with the ecosystem and finalized spec, although you might say it's in a release candidate state.
