Hey /g/ how can I get links opened in a new tab in Firefox to inherit the history of the parent tab that it was clicked from? Are there any extensions that can do this?

Currently all links that are opened in new tabs have no history, and thus you can't use the back button.

Is it really a hardship for one more click?

You can open the link in the parent tab. New tabs by definition are new tabs.

I tend to use the open in new tab as a 'branching' tools so that I can stay on the current page in a new tab (that I may want to branch from again in the future) but have access to all of the previous branches in the new tab as well
