Well he software decoders will improve performance over time but it will take a bit.
Software decoding for h264 today is not really different from HW decoding in terms of energy usage (on modern hardware) but it took years to arrive at this point.

I don't get any of those issues, it has to be your graphics card... settings of your player, whether streaming or not, the output color gamut and depth, whether you're running UHD or not... HDR kek. alot of factors are in play but a 100% processor usage just for playback even under smooth project at 60 fps with matroska and dolby tech is insane

Oddly enough if you had the GTX950 or GTX 960 which cost about 1/4 of your GPU and are a lot less powerful would do 4k decoding just fine.

You could also upgrade to any GPU in the 10xx series and also get 4k decoding support.
