It just works!

That's not debian. I'm not sure why anything would be held back during a dist-upgrade. A dirty way of fixing this shit would be to copy what it wants to remove and apt-get install it so its flagged as manual install.

I was stupid enough to think that ethernet and gpu drivers would be provided open source without any other requirements, so I thought that by downloading a normal testing iso of Debian I wouldn't have trouble.

Here's what I had to do to get that working.

>Install debian testing using the graphical installer
>Things go fine, requires certain network drivers that I do not possess but it still connects to internet just fine
>Restart the computer
>Where the grub at
>Have to download rEFInd
>Boot into debian finally
>KMS requires non-free drivers
>ethernet drivers don't work of course
>shit be stuck there, not booting
>gotta go into rescue mode
>find out that as root I have to use dhclient
>finally I can get into gnome
>I have to install grub manually and point out that the main drive is sdb, not sda
>After that fuckery is finally done, I find that gnome 3 on debian includes a fuckton of stupid games no one should ever care about, along with firefox
>Try to remove firefox
>Do you wanna remove gnome as well btw
>I guess I won't bother with that, apparently the software center is a thing here
>Stupid ass software center can't show what I have installed
>After installing chromium I also notice that the font rendering needs to be fixed

Remember to get the non-free/non-stable versions or better yet, just skip debian altogether

You clearly never found this page: https://wiki.debian.org/Steam
>HDD won't stop filling up with log files, have to delete them every hour.
What log files? How and where was it "filling up"?
>use 4 monitors and one of them won't go past a certain resolution.
>unable to mount network drive no matter what I do.
Maybe you needed nonfree firmware/drivers. Debian is 100% free software by default, so if you need proprietary software for your graphics and network hardware to work, or Steam itself (because it's proprietary), you need to 'activate' the nonfree repositories and get those nonfree bits.

Info that probably would've solved your problems:
https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware
https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList

You have to be capable of learning and doing a little troubleshooting to use GNU/Linux. Windows seems easier because you've likely been using it your entire life.

I prefer arch, but I don't find Debian repositories intuitive to manage, and apt get doesn't help a whole lot. Debian testing and unstable gave me a lot of trouble trying to get packages I want, and don't even get me started on ppas

I have never had a single dependency problem with arch. No weird packages being just flat absent from a repository, no playing the PPA game, it just werks.

Else just use Ubuntu mate or KDE neon.

Gladly. I've been using Debian since 2000 (stable on servers, testing on desktop/laptop machines) and "never had a single dependency problem" or "weird packages being just flat absent from a repository" either. How's that for anecdotal evidence?
Not saying these things don't happen in SID, but you have no reason to use development branch (which is actually *expected* to be unstable) if you're not a fucking Debian developer.

- I run Steam on Debian 8 stable every day of my life. It works great. GPU drivers work great.
- You can install Debian 8 in half an hour starting from scratch, if you have an IQ over 90.
- Anyone who thinks Debian 8 stable isn't stable is os-illiterate.

>>57047301
Testing wasn't jiving with me. I kept finding packages I NEEDED and couldn't get due to the stable version being removed "just cuz" and not even replaced with an older version. I couldn't get apt pinning working properly either, and I found myself needing to dick with it more and more, especially with user repos. I tried upgrading to unstable to get the packages, yet I couldn't get them to install either. One had been removed moments before I wanted to install, and the other had no installation candidates despite being in sid.

It was around this point I got extremely frustrated, and went back to arch. I have nothing actually against Debian. If it works for you, then congrats. My experience was not a pleasant one, and I found it to be much more of a hassle than arch or Ubuntu ever was for me.

Which is a shame because the Debian logo is the best in the game

I'm sorry, but you're fucking retarded.

1) multilib support. You can install 32bit packages on 64bit
2) you're doing something really fucking wrong if your drive "fills up" with log files. They should exist in /var/log/ for a time, usually until you run the program/daemons again, then it should clear the old log and begin a new one
3) xrandr, nigga. You add a modeline for the resolution you want, enable the modeline for that display, then apply it. Done.
4) Use nfs you gimboid. You add the ip of the machine you want to access the network drive from to the whitelist on the machine with the network drive and mount it from the other machine.

You could solve each of those with a total of 5 minutes of googling, you lazy shit. If you want to be spoonfed, just stay the fuck on Windows like a gaymurrrr babby

stable doesn't usually update packages unless there's a major bug detected so it triggers the shit out of hipsters who base their sense of self-worth on how big their version numbers are
>>
>>57053620
Does this cause any real issues? Does this mean that, for example, Firefox on Debian would be lagging behind several versions?
>>
>>57053577
Debian default distro is 'Stable' (currently 'Jessie'). The emphasis is on security and stability, and the packages are not the latest.

Linux ignorami often fail to realize that if they really want to brag about their version numbers, they can use Debian 'Testing' (currently 'Stretch'), or even 'Sid', and be just as up-to-date, unreliable and insecure as any other distro.

These guys either actually don't use software from this decade, convincing themselves it's insecure or unstable.

Or they use unstable or testing and convince themselves that "I-i-it's just as good!!! I promise" when they had to go out of their way to use up to date packages in a community that couldn't give a fuck about you the second you step off of stable.
Debian users are delusional.
>>
>>57053832
I general you will have older versions in stable, that are constantly maintained and updated with security and bug updates. You can also enable 'backports' and 'nonfree' repos, and get newer versions of packages that way.

E.G., the latest linux kernel is 4.7. The kernel in stable is a very secure and reliable 3.16. If you use stable but want to use the 4.7 kernel for some reason, you can enable backports repo and install it. Or you can just use testing instead of stable. It's still pretty reliable.

Personally, I'm perfectly satisfied with stable and the 3.16 kernel. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

Ok, Tardo, whatever you say.
>>
>>57053898

Not only am I running Linux as my primary OS with a /home/ as a ZFS pool of mirrored vdevs, when I'm using Windows for gaming I use a small Linux install under Hyper-V to access my ZFS array by attaching the physical drives to it. Then, via samba on the Linux install, I mount the array as a network drive over a virtual 10gbit network adapter with jumbo packets to get near-native performance(my Windows games are installed to the "network" drive).

But most of the time, I just use Linux.
