I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. I run CM12 with no GAPPS. I also use Wifi Privacy so the phone only connects to access points that I allow. I know that the cell towers give off an approximate location, but the case can be made with 'dumb'phones as well.

1. I do not believe that the Linux kernel is completely malware free. Some of its biggest contributers lately have been large corporations and government organizations.
2. I do not trust the Linux distros. Who knows what changes they make. I don't even trust the so called "completely free" ones specified by gnu.org. The only safe choice in my opinion is getting code from a very old OS and making your own system (which is nearly impossible for casual individuals to do on their own).
4. You are using hardware that is proprietary. How are you certain that your wifi is off or your microphone is off. Maybe the OS will tell you that it is off, but inside there is code that still uses it under your nose.

The worst part about this whole privacy thing is hindsight.

Had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have set up a Myspace, I would have set up a facebook but made sure I was just a good little goy like everyone else (same with a smart phone) and I would've been running Linux or TOR or a VPN or something when actually taking a look at the world.
