So according to Comcast >It is important to know that more

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

So according to Comcast
>It is important to know that more than 99% of our customers do not use 1 terabyte of data and are not likely to be impacted by this plan, so they can continue to stream, surf, and download without worry

Then what the fuck is the point in suddenly adding a data cap? Are those figures bullshit? What's their angle?
>>
>>57016539
are you against a company that understand and want to help the 99%?

are you rich? are you the 1%?

If they're being truthful in saying that 99% don't go over a TB, then how the fuck does this gain them profit? It's completely redundant.
>>
>>57016539
>Don't currently use 1tb
> 4k streaming becomes more widespread
>new revenue stream, from fees and fines
> why didn't you goyim complain before? We've had this cap in place forever.
I know how the story goes because I tried to rally community support when my local ISP did this, and was ignored, and now quietly seethe when people complain about overage charges.

Makes perfect sense
>>
>99%
>22 million subscribers

1% * 22 million subscribers = 220,000

No profit to be had there if so few people are impacted.
>>
>>57016614
Don't be so fucking stupid anon. Maybe they are being truthful but maybe they're leaving out the pat where they forecast that will change in the next 5 years.

In 5 years, no one is going to come back and think Comcast planned it but everyone will be pissed if they make that cap right when people are using it.
>>
>>57016614
Because maybe 1% use WAY more than 1 terabyte? Basically the fact that 99% use less than 1 terabyte tells you nothing about what the average is and how much they save by not allowing those 1% to use more than 1 terabyte.

>>
>>57016614
>If they're being truthful in saying that 99% don't go over a TB,
The 1% who do go over 1Tb are causing problems. They are probably downloading all day, every day and hogging bandwidth.
Most/all ISPs over-promise and under-deliver. It's called under-provisioning. That's OK if nobody uses more than the planned data. But if a small minority blows the limit then everybdy suffers.
It's not a problem if somebody occcasionally goes over the planned limit. But someone constantly over is a problem.
>>
>>57016614
i fucking hate retards
>>
I was going to say maybe the 1% are using 100s of terabytes but then I remembered Comcast speeds are shit and that would be impossible
>>
It's mostly to hurt hardcore content streamers. I'd imagine that demographic overlaps with the faggots that used to pay for premium channel packages like HBO who now use HBO Go, Hulu, Netflix or plain piracy to watch their shows instead of paying for premium.
Now to entice you to pay for premium channels they put a cap on your internet.
1tb of data goes by fast if you got an entire household constantly streaming content. I alone consume around 400gb a month and that's with what I would call regular usage with some streaming here and there, downloading games and other software. Now imagine an entire family of four doing this daily.

Comcast can go fuck itself
>>
>>57016539
>Then what the fuck is the point in suddenly adding a data cap? Are those figures bullshit? What's their angle?
Isn't it obvious? so they can get more money

Comcast is one of the most greedy and ruthless ISP's out there. They've gotten up in front of congress and lied about their data caps, their infrastructure and their internet service as a whole.

Compared to TWC's "our customers don't want faster internet speeds" lies, comcast takes the cake in terms of shit support and speeds.

Like TWC, they don't offer fibre and they charge out the ass for coaxial connections at no real benefit other than to save money. Customer satisfaction is in the shitter but customers can't switch because they have a monopoly on like 35% the geographic area of the US
>>
>>57016946
Also their datacap isn't to "ration the internet"

some engineer actively admitted that there was no real reason for it other than to charge overages.

In terms of internet speed, the US is way behind Europe, china, japan and every major developed area
>>
>>57016539
Why doesn't the US break up the ISP monopolies?
>>
>>57016985
Because the politicians are wrapped around their little fingers
>>
>>57016985
That's considered communism to the retards and the gives the gov't the ability to butt-buddy with their corporate friends while keeping the guise of "free market" going over everyone's eyes.

The free market will fix it, ay?
>>
>>57016539
I fucking hate Comcast, and they absolutely own the entire Tri-state area around Philly. Their new HQ building is in the city and they own all the politicians.

Lots of people should have gone to jail for "exclusive" provider agreements. Its Monopoly building and needs to stop.
>>
>>57016539
Data caps are exclusively to wring extra money out of power users.

Show me how much of a bandwidth bitch you are /g/

Also my laptop is piece of shit so no games for me which means no huge steam bandwidth but still I easily hit over 1TB

Technically if you play games, watch youtube, watch movies, you don't even need to be somekind of "power user" to reach 1TB cap.

Then cap offenders' bandwidth, not implement overage charges. The charges imply they plan on making money off this, and within time, it won't just be the 1%, especially with p2p network adoption for services (steam, windows, etc).
>>
>>57016574
>want to help
If 99% don't use 1TB, why impose limits on the 1%?
They don't gain anything.
But this is not about profit, is about teaching the US citizen how to suck cock and like it.

The anonymity we post under was so we could be free to talk about our diverse interests without being personally targeted by dogma-spouting conformist fascists. It's just money grubbing.

Anyone with a brain cell can tell you that data caps don't serve any other purpose. Internet isn't some consumable resource that needs to be rationed. It's not like water or electricity, where you're paying for the amount you receive. How much data you consume has literally no affect on Comcast's bottom line.

In fact, comcast and other ISP's would be happier if you didn't use the internet at all (while still paying them for the privilege, of course). If they can convince people to use less bandwidth, then there's less impetus for them to upgrade their infrastructure.

Wrong.

US as a whole, which is fucking huge, is faster than most European nations.

Some US states are faster than the fastest European countries.
>>
>>57016985
Because in the US the companies """are not""" monopolies.
Taken as a whole across the country there are various competing companies offering DSL and cable and satellite. The issue is they divide up areas into small blocks where only one operates, so you might have only the option of AT&T DSL, Comcast cable or Direct TV satellite, while someone the next county over might have a different set of companies for the same product. You get locked into one, it flat out is a monopoly, but on a large enough scale the companies point at the competition and manage to be technically legal. Unfortunately for their customers.

then when 4k streaming gets big they'll nab like 20% of people for going over their caps and it won't be as much of a story because the caps are old news.

That argument doesn't fly with people, if there is competition they will move. The sole reason they can get away with this is there isn't any competition.

Yeah nah, it's some made up bullshit. First they offer big space/transfer/whatever and when you're hooked, they cut the services because, hey, "you ain't using it ;^) (be ready to pay in 6 months)".

Think about it; they have millions of customers and are basically saying "We are changing our plan to impact 20,000 of our customers"

They're purposefully, knowingly, and willingly all for an extra few fractions of a % more profit, fucking over at least 20 000 people.

Oh yeah this company has my support

I feel sorry for you Americans.

I live in a third world country and my ISP does not implement data caps on their customers (including me). They may be rated as the worst ISP in my country (because we don't have any other choice) but I can download shit on torrent sites and look at YouTube videos all day and night at full speed without any bandwidth limits nor throttling.

Around this time last year uTorrent borked out and I've been too lazy to re-add all my torrent files. Normally this would be at probably 1.5TB total. Actual total is roughly 434GB.

>suddenly adding a data cap
You're retarded. There was a lower data cap and they increased it to 1 TB.

t. Comcuck who used to have basic ass 300 GB plan until they made the bare minimum 1 TB.

>>
>>57016614
The point of adding datacaps is to make the customers get used to it. Then they can add extra.

They started strong with 250 data cap, but with so much backlash, they stopped enforcing it. Now they increased it to 1TB, if the backlash isn't strong, then they'll keep that in forever and charge more when the time comes.

>>
>>57016614
It allows them to set caps in place so that normies get used to the idea of being capped, making it easier for them to lower said caps and implement tiers. Once thats done prepare to get raped with data costs.

FCC will get involved because something needs to be done about ADs eating up data.

>>

No we don't.
Your options are:

"The areas major cable company"
"Shit tier DSL" (unless you live in a metropolis and even then sometimes you are stuck with 6Mbps at best)

"Cellular data"

Or rarely Fiber like Verizon or google, but they are almost exclusively in areas that don't have a cable ISP or only have shit tier cable infrastructure.
