I feel like my GPU is the only thing holding me back at this point, but I am kind of retarded about computers it seems.

So this is a graphics card issue right?
I took this 8 hours ago, it's gotten so much more worse now. I am worried for my PC.

The Nvidia drivers crash and give me that kernel error trying to run New Vegas and rendering videos with CUDA crashes it too, what are the chances that something else other than the card is fucked too?

Well, i use linux so i think a stable open source driver is more important than performance. I have a gtx 660 and nouveau is not stable. Would an rx 480 be a good choice? Or should i just get a gtx 1060 and use nvidia botnet drivers?

well obviously get the fastest card that not only can you afford, but not hurt your wallet later down the line.

i have a 480 myself and i love it, but if i had more money at the time for something like the fury x or 1080 i would of went with either of those. obviously since they're faster.

1060 6gb is your best bet imo. If you going to play above 1080p you should try for the 1070, but 1060 is fine for ultra settings at 1080

Your 390 is in theory the weakest part, HOWEVER, "weakest" doesn't mean weak.
You'd do best waiting for the 490 to launch to see how it plays out, because right now, not even a GTX1080 is a good buy for you unless that 390 shits itself.

R9 390(x?) -> GTX1080 isn't worth the price tag. If the 490 is a challenger to the Titan X (pascal) then THAT would be a buy to consider.
I suspect they'll be repeating the Fury X though, seeing as there's supposed to be two lines of Vega. It wouldn't make sense to have two different "designs" and just have them be whole card + cut down card.
Both will include a whole card. Fury X successor will likely include a cut down version.

Does the nvidia lineup really have issues with dx12? From what I've gathered and lineup has some sort of advantage at a hardware level. I know the 1070 is way overkill for 1080p gaming but suited well for 144hz when I go that route in like another year.

I'm impartial to brand, I'll be upgrading from a 7850 2gb.

Yes their DX12 support is worse than AMD. But AMD seem to have some issues (or at least had) running above 120Hz, but in return AMD doesnt want an extra $100 for their version of gsync like Nvidia jews do.
Also AMD get more performance boost over time with driver updates than nvidia which almost strangles your card with newer updates.

Right now? Yes, the 1070 is quite a bit faster than a 390.
AMD fucked up by not releasing a 490 in time. But if you dont plan to upgrade for a while you could perhaps wait and see if it's any good.

No. Although the 1070/80 ARE better, the key element here is "worth".
Its not worth even considering a 1080 until the 490 releases and either challenges it or the 1080ti.
If it challenges the 1080, I expect it to perform better, without fail, otherwise it'd be a useless card.
If it challenges the 1080ti, I can easily see standard 1080 prices dropping to compensate (as if they aren't artificially high right now due to lack of competition.)

Thanks. I was planning on building a new PC around the end of November, but I was unsure about the GPU as I only got it in January. I might hang onto it and see what happens.

The thing that really bothers me about it is how hot it runs and the noise it makes under load especially when it's overclocked, but I'm planning on getting a better case, so hopefully that will help with that.

An rx 470 is all you need for great gaming. $200. Nothing else even comes closes for fps/$.

For 1440p, the lowest you should consider would be an AMD Fury (air) or Nvidia 980ti
For 4k? You're looking towards the 1080ti when that releases. I mean, sure, you could go and pay more for the Titan X(p), but there's no point.
