/sqt/ stupid questions general

I have a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and while I don't mind waiting the five fucking hours it takes for Windows Update to find all of it's updates, I DO mind the fact that it's forever stuck at 0% while installing them.

How do I fix this?

Even trying to manually install update "fix" updates is stuck with a GUI saying "Searching for updates on this computer..."

I am new to computers and recently got one. I am not very good at them, I'm a fucking n00b. Are there any textbooks, guides or video tutorials that can make me learn basics and other stuff of lets say, "using Windows"/or material that would help me be good at computers?
Fuck, I feel like killing myself while typing this. Help me out guys.
>>
>>57011890
i don't think it's a case thing, also all the fan case are mounted on the case but the case didn't came with it

Also the fan could be even the cpu fan or the psu fan i can clearly tell because they are too near
>>
>>57011812
IIR you have to cancel all the updates and restart. Then install all updates except for SP1 and then restart and then do SP1.

Sorry if this sounds like a retard wrote it. I'm retarded.
>>
>>57011863
Isnt that perfectly normal? I'm guessing it's testing the CPU fan to make sure it is not being blocked by anything. If it doesnt spin then you'll get an error straight away and avoid destroying your 500 dollar processor.

>>57011870
You have to know someone who is inside to get access. Back in the day I got into one of them via a guy from IRC room I visited often. You youngsters might have your discords and whatever.

It's really annoying to get into one but they're hoping that by blocking legitimate users they'll stop some FBI agents too

So I got a 144hz 1440p main monitor and a 1080p 60hz secondary monitor.

So far I got it to work so the main monitor seems to work normally at 144hz. However, the second monitor is weirdly laggy. Like when I drag windows around on it, everything seems to have high latency and moves really unsmoothly.

How do I fix that?

Also, when I have firefox maximized on my 144hz monitor it's kind of wrong and laggy like that aswell, though not as hard. When I fullscreen it with f11 or window it, I dont have that issue.

In video games I have not noticed an issue. They seem to be working at 144hz properly as far as I can tell.
>>
>>57012168
Forgot some info: I'm using windows 7 and a gigabyte g1 1080. I plug both monitors into the GPU, the 144hz one with a displayport cable and the 60hz with hdmi.
>>
>>57012146
Oh, in that case I dont know. Try to figure out which fan is causing it.

I'll bite the bait.
I don't really know of any guides for general use of computers that don't assume you're from an african tribe and have never seen any technology before, so I don't think that would be a good way to learn.
In all honesty, just hang around here on /g/ and maybe find a few good tech related subreddits to browse. Over time you'll start to become more and more familiar with terms.

I know I'm going to get a lot of shit for saying this, but try getting into pc gaming a bit. That itself won't make you more knowledgeable but it should get you interested in computers. That's also how most people get interested in this stuff.

IT problem that I haven't figured out

My boss's computer has a static IP so that it can be reached remotely. Occassionaly (maybe once a month?) the network connection will change it's IP to something really random and not in our IP scheme at all and he loses connections to our systems and file shares. If I enable DHCP it works fine but when I set it back to static it goes back to the random IP address. Eventually I usually get it resolved and it's fine until it happens again.

Anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this?

Can anyone tell me a good wireless router to beef up my wifi? I have a really good Internet but I cannot disconnect the router/modem for it (Verizon policy) and I am thinking about a router-router connection.

>>
>>57013631
Laptop processors usually have a laptop-only socket that wont fit into any motherboard you can find.

Raspberry PI would be okay-ish but it's not really designed for muiltimedia. You'll have to hassle with codecs and stuff, also it might not be powerful enough. I think you'll have better luck with a mini-itx build.

Controlling it will be a nightmare too. You'll probably have to think about getting a touchscreen display and installing remix os or some other android variant for touchscreen-friendly apps. Unless of course you want to keep a keyboard and a mouse in your car.

So NewEgg has free items

Except once you click to purchase they price split the order and the Free Item is billed at would be retail cost.

Is that legal?

Free implies no charge and yet even if it were price split there can be no doubt that it was charged at cost.

Why do companies like Verizon lock their bootloaders and force bloat on their customers? Doesn't this lose them more money than it makes them?
>>
>>57015499
No. The companies included in the bloat probably pay Verizon lots of money to force those apps on consumers devices.
The amount of users that actually cares enough to not buy a phone so it doesn't have any bloat is pretty insignificant, so even if carriers lose direct sales from tech literate consumers, it isn't enough to warrant a change.
>>
>>57015499
I don't know, I think it's really just a final "fuck you" to the customer. I do know that some phones, when rooted, constantly power cycle until the battery dies in hopes that you turn it in and buy a new one (since you voided the warrenty).

I've got pic related for a PC, had it for about two years now. One thing I've noticed in the past couple of weeks is that the CPU starts to skyrocket in temperature. For example, playing anything from RE4 to GTA V that it goes up into the late sixties-mid seventies Celsius while the rest of my parts are really low, even the GPU which only goes up to around sixty. I haven't moved anything around in my case, and I'm running the CPU with a stock fan with no overclocking. Anybody know if there's a way to figure out exactly what's causing my CPU to shoot up in temp that much?

What's the easiest way to remove audio tracks and subtitles from a movie?
I know how to do it in Handbrake, but it basically transcodes the entire movie which takes forever.
I don't want any changes to the video (or even the audio, really), I just want to remove the additional language tracks.

So I made the move to fulltime linux on my desktop a month ago, I'm pretty happy with it but..

Windows is still eating 70GB off my ssd, I want to format it and make a new smaller partition for windows and give the rest of the space to my linux partition.

So the question is, in that smaller partition I will keep for windows (just in case..), is there a good windows ISO to install on it? (as in, windows 7 obviously, all the telemetry shit already disabled, etc) or do I have to install the official ISO and then do the rest by myself?

http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_output.asp

JavaScript does NOT have any built-in print or display functions.

JavaScript can "display" data in different ways:

Writing into an alert box, using window.alert().
Writing into the HTML output using document.write().
Writing into an HTML element, using innerHTML.
Writing into the browser console, using console.log().

alert I guess, what does print do in other languages

a quick solution if you want to alert it all together is creating a separate var, and instead of alerting every time, just add the string (and a newline) to that var, after the loop, alert that var

How do shortest route problems work in cases like the next one? Let's say there are 30 villagers trying to go from Start to 5, where the numbers are the traveling times of the routes they can take. Lets say that I'm asked what's the minimum time they all take to go from Start to 5, I can think of two different ways it could work and I don't know which one is the correct:

1. It could mean that the shortest time is when every individual villager takes the shortest time, thus 100*30. This one looks like most of these problems, where time is just a number that you add.

2. It could mean that time is a global resource that keeps running, then when 5 villagers have moved from Start to 1, one villager has moved from Start to 2. This means that some villagers reach 5 through the shortest route, but some other villagers reach 5 through longer routes; since this is in parallel then the total time is not the sum of the individual times, but less. This one would be more like reality.

Which one is the right way to approach these problems?

I don't think I understand. Your worry is that the malware could tamper with the CD while you're burning it? Most malware (like adware) have very specific functions and wouldn't do stuff like that, but you should scan your computer with an antivirus if you want to be safer. Get Avast & MalwareBytes and scan it with those two and see what comes up. Anons I need your help, I have this code in C++ and this line:
 ]public KellyEvaluator(decimal proportion = 1.0M)

But I get this:

Now I asked my teacher, and a few friends, and I found that the M might mean that I lack something, or that the guy that made the code intended it to be 100000 in place of 1M.
Can you help me fix it? Pls no bully

Is there a way to configure VMWare/other VM software to prevent applications from detecting they are being run in a VM? This goes for my academic institution requiring me to install a certain browser on a Windows/Mac host machine, however there is no Linux version.
The program detects it's being run in a virtual machine and blocks me from running it.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. There is this lecture I looked up a little called nand2tetris where you start with a nand operator and then build an operating system step by step. I thought if you eventually have a machine you can program on and which was built solely from nand operators then every algorithm could be eventually translated into a "nand algorithm". I see now that you have to keep the machine and the algorithm that runs on it apart.

I have NVIDIA GeForce Experience installed for the occasional driver update. I want it to stop starting up with my PC, but disabling it in MSCONFIG and removing it from the Startup folder in AppData hasn't stopped it from starting up.

I noticed in the MSCONFIG that it seems to start by running rundll32.exe and loading some DLL files. I'm not entirely sure how to go about ensuring the program isn't run at startup when it's doing it this way. Anyone got any advice on how I can properly stop it? I know it'd be easiest to uninstall it, but that's not what I'm trying to do.

Hardware fags help me out:

I'm a poorfag building my rig one part at a time from parts I get used or free. Had a decent one going with a Core2 quad and mostly old parts. Saw a much better mobo cheap for the same socket, and bought it. Put it all together, it turns on fine but I get no video. I've ruled lots of things out--tried a different gpu, different pcie slots, it just won't give me video. There's no integrated video on this mobo for some reason. Could that maybe be caused by a weak PSU? Mine's pretty weak, and this mobo is bigger than the old one if that makes a difference

>>57011812
I was just dealing with this problem. Some older updates are known to cause crashes. You have to manually install some of them in a specific order. The order is here: http://www.howtogeek.com/255435/how-to-update-windows-7-all-at-once-with-microsofts-convenience-rollup/

If that doesn't work, and you're hanging at Checking for Updates, stop the Windows Update task and service, take ownership and delete the entire folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, and reboot.

Failing that, the last trick is the WSUS Offline Update tool. Look it up. It's a pain in the ass but it seems to work when nothing else does.

Is it worth overclocking a 5 year old processor?

I'm currently holding out until AMD comes out with their new tech (Zen / AM4) which from what I've read will be sometime late this month or November. I'm looking to get the most out of my PC before then which still has some dated hardware in it

I don't know how far I can push my CPU and I'm not experienced with overclocking, but is it worth trying to OC it? I'm a little 2spooked about messing with voltages.

Specs are in the picture.

>>
>>57022322
ffmpeg is a media encoder
>>
>>57022322
Yeah static is probably what you want.

ffmepg is mostly for converting videos to different formats. The highest quality audio and video on youtube actually comes as separate files, so youtube-dl just uses ffmpeg to combine them into a single container file.
>>
>>57022328
>>57022359

What's the point of getting it though how does it help?

I'm sorry if I'm being frustrating with the questions btw but I really do appreciate your help.

Just fyi, last time I downloaded the video for a test, the file downloaded was 40mb, now that I downloaded ffmpeg and took that file out of bin and put it in the same file as youtube-dl the same youtube video was 128 mb. Does this mean having ffmpeg in the same file ensures that youtube-dl downloads at full video and audio quality?

With youtube-dl is there a way to download the files as mp4 instead of mkv? I like to do video editing shit but Sony Vegas doesn't take mkv and converting videos has a lot of loss
>>
>>57022369
youtube-dl uses ffmpeg to mux ("join") the video and audio streams together into a single file

the higher quality youtube videos (anything over 720p30) have the video and audio delivered seperately
>>
>>57022392
you can use ffmpeg to losslessly transmux mkv videos to mp4, however, mp4 doesn't support mkv does, you can't for example, put a vp9 video stream into an mp4 file
>>
>>57022408
>mp4 doesn't support mkv does

>>57022408
>>57022424
What do you mean, what's a vp9 video stream? Also how do you use ffmpeg to transmux mkv into mp4? (Sorry for more questions)
>>
>>57022369
It's just the way youtube stores its videos. It has multiple copies of every video at varying qualities.

It keeps regular mp4 files with audio and video in the same file only up to 720p. If you don't have ffmpeg, then youtube-dl will just download this.

For anything higher quality it keeps separate files for audio and video, with a range of different encoding and resolutions. Youtube-dl will want to download the highest quality out of these, but it needs ffmpeg to combine them into one file.

You can add the -F command to see a list of all the available files for a video, and can even download them manually with the -f command.
>>
>>57022455
>>You can add the -F command to see a list of all the available files for a video, and can even download them manually with the -f command.

how do I use this -F command? do i write

youtube-dl.exe -f [inserturl]
? I am quite bad at this haha
>>
>>57022449
>What do you mean,
mkv and mp4 are container formats, they are files which contain one or more media streams (typically one video stream and one audio stream, but may also include more audio streams, subtitles, etc)
>what's a vp9 video stream?
a video stream which is encoded to the VP9 video format (youtube's highest quality videos use this format)
>Also how do you use ffmpeg to transmux mkv into mp4? (Sorry for more questions)
like this;
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4

ffmpeg will give you an error if it is unable to do this, such as when your mkv contains something mp4 can't contain (you can then exclude or convert input streams so it will work)
>>
>>57022495
it's case-sensitive, "-f" and "-F" do different things
but yes,
youtube-dl.exe -F "<url>"
>>
>>57022503
>a video stream which is encoded to the VP9 video format (youtube's highest quality videos use this format)
You mean videos with like 2k and 4k resolutions right? I probably won't be downloading those anyway..

>ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4
Instead of input I put the video's name right? And output is what I want the video to then be called right? Cause I tried it but it just says >[NULL @00000000001e6fe0] Unable to find a suitable output format for '0'

>>
>>57022625
with -f
-F lists, -f chooses

the format can be anything from a single number ("-f 18" for the old "360p" format) to a rather complex set of preferences and fallbacks

for example, this is what i use for streaming things though mpv
>0/(bestvideo[vcodec=vp9][fps>=50]/bestvideo[fps>=50]/bestvideo)[height<=1080][tbr<5000][protocol!=http_dash_segments]+(bestaudio[acodec=opus]/bestaudio[ext=webm]/bestaudio)/best
>>
>>57022625
youtube-dl -f [formatcode] [url]

>>57022392
Yeah now that you know about formats it's not that hard.

Just do something like
youtube-dl -f 137+140 [url]

That would give you 1080 h.264 and high quality m4a which would get combined into an mp4 file.

Of course you should check with -F to see if there are higher quality formats available, just don't pick anything that says webm next to it if you want mp4.
>>
>>57022666
"best" is the best /single/ stream, with video and audio
if you always want the best possible output, use
"bestvideo+bestaudio/best"
>>
>>57022666
reread >>57022455

Yes, the highest quality video that's stored on youtube's servers with both video and sound is 720p, but that's why you downloaded ffmpeg: So you can combine the higher quality audio video together.

most likely because the mkv contains thing mp4 doesn't support
note that youtube-dl will use .mp4 if possible, so if yout mkv is from youtube-dl, then that alone shows the file contains something mp4 doesn't support
