Do you guys recommend the tablet version of the thinkpad x220? I've always heard you praise the x220 but not the x220T.
Is it worse in some way? I have the opportunity to get a x220T with the i7 pretty cheap.
>>
>>57010888
tablets are useless.

if I need to take notes, I can type faster.

If you need to take notes that require drawing, why the fuck aren't you writing with a pencil and paper in the first place?
>>
Also, I've heard you guys don't recommend the i7 version because of overheating. Would this be a problem if I were to use it just for working (programming and office work), not gaming?
>>
>>57010935
That's not the point here. I wouldn't even use the screen. It's just that where I'm from I have a pretty cheap offer for the tablet version, and there are not x220 (non-tablet) with intel core i7.
>>
>>57010954
of course there are
just typing on one
>>
>>57011056
The keyboard is different?
>>
I have the x201t. Brilliant as a laptop, so so as a tablet. I got it as a laptop and would never part with it.
>>
>>57011064

He's being sarcastic. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a bit heavier, that's it. Handwritten notes are objectively more effective.

How much is it going for? If you get a good deal on it, try it for a while and don't like it, you can always just resell it on ebay and make money on it.
>>
>>57010935
watching shit and reading stuff in tablet mode is comfy
I can also practice drawing without dealing with physical paper and shit as much, or buying a wacom or something as well as my laptop.
Flipping the screen around to show someone something is kinda cool and more convenient than flipping the entire laptop around. Yes, I have actually made use of that.
tablets are useless, laptops that can act as tablets are actually cool.
t. 230t user.

It's glorious. As long as you use Windows with OneNote.

Don't listen to retards telling you HURR JUST TYPE, ITS FASTER. Good luck with typing math equations, auxillary drawings and quick scribbles. OneNote can use all of it, and it OCRs both text and math.
>>
>>57011108
> Good luck with typing math equations, auxillary drawings and quick scribbles
Obviously 'just type' has isn't fucking applicable to classes where you'd have to write any of that.
If you have to write any shit like that its vastly better to just use a pen and paper.
This is from someone who uses and likes a thinkpad tablet, but I wouldnt use it for notes.
>>
>>57011108
>Good luck with typing math equations, auxillary drawings and quick scribbles
Can confirm, it is hell to write these as fast as someone using pen and paper. Maths are the only course at uni in which I don’t use my laptop to take notes.
>>
>>57011092
Ok, thank you for the honest response.
I can get the i7 version for 330 euro. Here in Spain it's a pretty good deal, all the x220 i7 I've found cost more than that.

>>57011095
I'm afraid that, due to it being tactile, the screen would be a bit worse than the non-tablet version.
I am also afraid that the tactile properties will be a bit of a pain in the ass when I install Linux.
But I don't know, I've never used a tablet.
>>
Well with the tablet version you are guaranteed to have the ips screen. I don't use the touch screen part of it but don't undermine the swivel function. Really handy to turn screen while working on car to show PDFs.
>>
>>57010888
Make sure it has the pieces of rubber on the left and right sides of the keyboard. Those are the only things keeping the screen from swinging around when it's closed. In addition, the screen gets scratched on the keyboard without them. Other than that it's great. Linux works well on them also.
>>
>>57011166
Im not sure what you mean by this, but the touch/stylus stuff works totally fine for me on ubuntu.
The screen ghosts terribly however, my one complaint about it.
>>
>>57011191

That's terrible. Its ridiculous that they removed the latch to put in a touch pad.
>>
>>57011166
>Here in Spain it's a pretty good deal, all the x220 i7 I've found cost more than that.
Take a look at the deals on your local websites somewhat similar to craiglist. Here in France I found some great deals on leboncoin, and most of the deals were cheaper on this website than on ebay.
>>
Wow, a lot of you have this, that's encouraging.
Thank you all for the information!
>>57011195
I meant that I didn't know if the drivers for the tactile properties would be alright in every Linux distro
>>
>>57011219
The prices here for the x220 range from 210 euro to 280 approximately. And there are almost no i7 versions, and those I've found are a lot more expensive (more than 400 euro).
That's why I'm considering buying this tablet version.
>>
>>57011216
I know. It took me awhile to find one that had the rubber bits. Most of the cheap ones on ebay are missing them. I don't know how though. Unless you just abuse the thing they're actually fairly secure. I would rather have the latch though and it's bullshit because the x201t had a trackpad and latch. But then the x201t had an even shittier screen. I've thought about going to an x61t for the better screen resolution and latch, but the specs are worse. On the upside though, I run Linux so it's light and any processing that's heavy is done on my desktop anyway so I figure I could make it with an x61t and a new battery.

>>57011166
I've found mine to be a very solid laptop. It's had a 256gb ssd and 8gb of ram. It's only the 1.07ghz core i3 that slows it down but it's fine for general uses. Most major Linux distros pick up the tablet functions. Some work better than others but it doesn't take too much effort to get it working. It works with with Win 10 too. It's usually a wacom tablet that is built into the screen so drivers are standard. Works well as a daily driver.
>>
>>57011350
Nice to know. This will actually be my first laptop. I want it mostly for work: programming and office tasks.
I kind of still am a bit afraid of the overheating thing of the i7 version, although I want this version for its better performance.
If I don't intend to do any kind of gaming, will that be a problem?
>>
>>57011440
Never heard of heating issues with this line.
>>
Used to have one. Unfortunately the device is so thick that it constantly feels like you're drawing on a small phone book. Remember when you draw the device is essentially closed so it's quite annoying compared to paper.
>>
with x220tablets there's no real performance difference between i5 or i7 version model CPUs at all you can check yourself on google.

I have the tablet version of x220t myself and what I suggest for you is to find out if it's multitouch one? or the other one? I have the non-wacom digitizer, non-touch IPS gorgeous 1366x768 one and I recommend that screen if you want a x220 (tablet or not). otherwise you could upgrade ram and SSD yourself and you don't have a better CPU choice. better screen is your only option on those.

good luck.

I've got the x220T with an i5 and a Samsung SSD and this thing works great. I run a dualboot setup where I use windows for CAD-related work on an outdated piece of software, and I got Debian for almost everything else.
Got it dirt-cheap online, used it for 2 years now, and I am not giving it up.

One issue I got is the weight itself, I'm on the go a lot, I'm in a very hot city and the backpacks make my back sweaty after 3min outside so I carry it in a briefcase with a strap over my shoulder and it's fucking painful.
>>
>>57010888
it's THICK, don't expect to use it as a tablet replacement

also from the factory they only offered up to 6-cell batteries, you can get chink 9-cell's though

the regular x220 had the option for 9-cell's from the factory

x220t's are guaranteed IPS displays, they are bright with good colors but two out of the two I've experienced had ghosting/image retention problems

also from what I've experienced the OEM digitizer did not have very good pressure sensitivity if drawing is important to you, also only has 1 side button, you can get a lifebook digitizer with two side buttons and better pressure sensitivity if that's what you want

otherwise I love it and I'll use it until it dies, no plans to replace it or sell it, sandy bridge is powerful enough for pretty much any casual usage
>>
Currently waiting on my second x220t to come in. The first one's screen died after the first reboot so I sent that shit back. These tabtops/laplets have been used for that function long before you're getting your hands on them. Luckily If the screen is fucked you can find replacements online.
>>
Limp wristed geeks whining about it being thick. Do you even lift?
>>
Limp wristed pimps whining about it being big. Have you even lift?

Its shit.
The ThinkPad Yoga replaces it effectively.

got mine with 16GB RAM and a 256GB Samsung 850 pro ssd for $260. installed gentoo on it about a yr ago. beast.

I have one since back in my undergrad engineering days, they required it.

little bits and pieces of plastic bumpers break off pretty easily so if you dont love the machine its pretty good. also, after 5 years the battery goes to shit. ive been meaning to replace mine or just getting a new laptop altogether but idk
>>
>>57010935
I make money drawing furry porn. With a tablet I can do that anywhere.
>>
>>57014146
Isn't 16gb RAM excessive?
>>
>>57014744
not really. gives me room to play around with VMs, compile stuff in RAMdisk, Firefox profile in ramdisk etc etc.
>>
>>57014974
Oh ok, that's interesting.
>>
it's great, I have one

top comfy, always comes with IPS display, the stylus is neat
>>
>>57010937
I got the i5 X220T and I'm regretting it. The i7 version comes with a USB 3 port. Honestly get the i7 version and underclock it if you have heating issues.
>>
>>57011108
>>It's glorious. As long as you use Windows with OneNote.
literally why?

I have GNU/Linux on mine. Draws fine in Krita. Not sure what I'd use for note-taking.
>>
>>57010888
If you want a Thinkpad tablet just get a Yoga Thinkpad 14.
>>
>>57010935
>If you need to take notes that require drawing, why the fuck aren't you writing with a pencil and paper in the first place?
Because I can type the parts that can be typed and spin my laptop into a tablet for when I need to draw? Having a convertible in high school was great, especially for geometry.
>>
>>57010935
Which begs the question: should I spend money on a surface pro for school? My friend is a MechE and he finds it super convenient that he can take notes and draw diagrams without the extra paperweight. He said it takes a while to get used to it but it becomes smooth once you can transition from writing to typing quick enough

I just got an X220t. Only thing you should keep in mind is that it's bulkier and heavier than a normal X220. I'm buying a 3-cell battery for it to shrink its footprint and weight, but of course I'll need to keep it charged more.
I'm still pretty happy with it. Writing and doodling is a great, and it runs smoothly with an ssd. Doesn't break the bank and provides a bunch of upgrade options.
>>
>>57010888
I have it but it feels heavier than the regular x220. I regret it as I never use the tablet feature.
