I didn't really know where else to ask, but I'm going to uni in a bit. I have a fairly significant amount of music, movies, and chinese cartoons stored at home (approximately 18 TB). After uni, I ship out for the military. Is there any cheap way I can keep this data readily accessible as I move to a dorm, apartment, and eventually move somewhere else without a permanent place of residence? I know that cloud backup services exist but most of the ones I've seen seem like an expensive hassle. I'd just like to keep all my music and movies with me as I move.

Sounds dope, but provider is shit and my location makes it hard to get a decent, consistent connection. How would I set my stuff up into a server? It's all just sitting around in a tray case I have with several drives. Should I look into making a VPN server out of an old desktop I have lying around? How would that work?

Yes, buy notebook with two HDDs (or with dvd + hdd combo) and replace both of them with 4TB+ models.
Delete movies which you have already watched.
Problem solved. Anything else relies on having good internet connection, which means your data hoarding needs will be left unsatisfied in the worse moments of your future life.

Find a friend with great internet. Get really close to them and track their movement through their house, then sneak your box into a less traveled room(possibly disguising it). After you have done this, install xbmc or another media streaming service on your covert ops server and you have your own Netflix.
