Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

This is a Botta Nova homage.

What complications would you put in the middle? (Weather, date, steps taken, sunrise/sunset, etc)
>>
>>57009047
People like ninefag as well as those who wear replicas (and arguably homages too) have no taste. Instead of living well within their means they either scavenge the bottom of the barrel for shitty models from reputable brands they otherwise couldn't afford or wear fakes of reputable brands they couldn't afford at all.

>>
>>57009586
How about you don't buy it if you can't afford the original design? Mechanical watches are not a necessity.

>>57009644
>How about you don't buy it if you can't afford the original design?
That is the most retarded thing I have ever seen on 4chan. And that's a high bar.

If you're autistic enough to not buy a watch because it looks like, or takes design features from another, then you're severally limiting yourself. I mean, by that logic, any watch with a Maxi Dial is a copy of the original submariner, and shouldn't be bought because of that reason.

Believe it or not, when you speak to another watch enthusiast in reality, outside of your basement, they don't care if something is a homage or not, so long as the watch is solid, doesn't look like shit, and has a decent movement, then it's a good watch.

>>
>>57009586
My point, not this other guy, was suggesting you find something nice, original, and *tasteful* for $450 instead. Live within your means and stop trying to be what you're not. It's not hard. You're not being limited. Brands like Seiko have fuckloads of models, and now there are microbrands as well. I don't care so much about homages, as I said: arguably, while the other two offenders I mentioned are far worse.

>>
>>57009788
Absolutely agree with everything you said, but with a qualifier.

A watch being an original design is by no means a make or break selling point for me. While they can certainly be interesting, they're not something that I exclusively hunt for.

My ultimate goal for anything I buy, is value for money. And frankly, I feel it's near impossible to find anything that is better value in terms of mechanical watches than an OVM. I got mine for £315, and it totes a 2824 Elaboré, rated for 300m, and frankly has one of the most comfortable bracelet's I've ever encountered. For £315, you don't have much choice in the UK. In regards to mechanical and automatics especially, hell, even a fucking Seiko Turtle runs for £500 new here.
>>
>>57009698
There is a difference between a homage and what clearly is just an inferior copy of an expensive design without the right proportions and details which make that design good.

Not the guy you were talking to, but you guys are intentionally falling into a fallacy, in order to justifie buying something shitty, either way a replica or a "hommage" that is no other thing that a blatant copy. Let's make simple:

Let's say there are two watches:

Watch "A" ($$$$$) and
Watch "B" ($) wich, incidently, is a derivative design from A

You can buy B whenever you want but, what you SHOULDN'T do is buy B solely because you like A, but you can't afford A, so you decide to settle down with B in an effort to replace A in your mind with the closer thing affordable.

If you do, you'll end with B as a watch that doesn't really please you as A would have, since B doesn't have the quality/characteristics that made A appeling to you, and worst of all, it will be a constant reminder that you really wanted A but couldn't afford it.

If, in the other hand, you encounter B, find it likeable and buy it because you want to wear it and you don't covet A at all, you'll get to enjoy the watch you have bought without more consideration.

However, if you are in the first scenario you'll never truly be happy with your watch. You'll always wish to be able to buy A and B will remain a poor replacement.

And since more "hommages" tend to force their designs to resemble the original, but without the proper movement/quality, you'll end up with the watch equivalent of a faux body kit like pic related.

if you already have nice watches that's cool. if you want another good watch that is also matches with your belt and shoes why not try another watch maker brand, another model or maybe just some leather wristband for the watches you already own?

This is the cheaper of the lot, likely the one that i'm going to keep. Also, got my great grandfathers Kirovskie.
>>
>>57011684
It looks interesting, would have preferred it in silver and with Cyrillic on the dial though.
Care to show me your grandpa's kirovskie? Hope you don't dare to trade for shekels such a personal piece.

Strontium-aluminate is the shit modern lume is made from. They lace it with europium to boost the glow.

What I don't know is that stuff like Super-Luminova or Seiko Lumibrite has extra additives to make it better than pure SrAl2O4.

>>57011683
They're harmless. Non-toxic, non-radioactive.

I don't have sentimental value to watches that i just randomly purchase on eBay, so i have no real qualm about selling them. Family watches are different thing all together.

From what i got off the WUS autists, is that the dial was replaced with a Artsel reproduction dial that was made in the 50's. The current black dials that you see in the fleabay Kirvoskies are modern reproductions. Otherwise, it's a mostly original 1942 ChChz (Chistopol) made Kirovskie with some parts replaced when it was fixed.

It's a neat piece, and deserves a better picture, but being both the size of a pocket watch and 74 years old i'd rather not wear it too often.
>>
>>57011738
It's important to note that you have to dope it with europium to give it the glow in the first place. Lumibrite and super luminous contain other dopants to further enhance the effect. So buying just raw strontium aluminate is not going to work.

It's a watch made to create the look of a converted pocket watch. Pic related, this Longines goes for that same sort of style.

It's using a 0 instead of 10, and 1 instead of 11. I'm not sure which watchmaker normally does that. Tsovet?

And either the chrono is running or it's a fake chrono, because none of the hands are zeroed.

Not sure on brand.

So something just happened with my brand new Amphibia: two lume dots fell off the dial.

I've seen this discussed before, and it seems it's not an isolated case. Seems Vostok is fucking up many dials lately. Think I can get a replacement or something? Did someone get a replacement?

Can't post a picture, just imagine an Amphibia with two lume dots hanging around the dial.

>>
>>57012998
It happens to a lot of watches, though it was likely made during the 2015~ up to early 2016 run when their quality dropped for a bit because of banking issues,

Though, Amphibia dials are easy as shit to get. Might as well get one with superluminova on it.
>>
>>57013032
Well replacing it is a whole other story.

With the price of the dial, the tools to change it, risking to fuck it up because I have zero experience in that stuff, and risking those fucking lume dots to fall off again unless I pick one without dots that doesn't look like shit, I'm better off throwing it into the trash. Or paying someone a fortune to do it because all watch artists are jews, but then it'll be cheaper to get a fine Seiko.

I'll see if I can at least have it opened to remove the loose dots for cheap, otherwise into the trash it goes.

Vostoks seem to be slowly declining in quality over the years. Mine is 2014 and it's still mostly alright, however the endlinks don't mate with the case, and the rotor is solid, it doesn't have the Vostok logo cutout. But there's a noticeable decline if you compare 80's, 90's, 2000's and recent Vostoks.

Even if you regulate it to perfect time, it'll eventually drift off

Vostok movements are very low beat rate, does wonders for reliability, but has relatively bad accuracy.

19800 bph isn't that low and or bad. Nor is it exactly that great as far as reliability goes, i've got 40 year old Seiko hi-beats that are working just fine and dandy and 50 year old 18000bph's Seiko's that are also working perfectly.

Though, i've had 7S26's that had really bad temper and were running very irregularly.

>Even if you regulate it to perfect time, it'll eventually drift off

So will all mechanical watches over time, and they will be out of adjustment from both wear and shock.

>That being said they can usually be within +- 20s a day if you regulate them well and have a timegrapher.

Depends, i've owned two Vostoks in the past and one now. All 3 were regulated to do +5 to +8 secs per day, and were used for over two years as such. All three were regulated via phone apps, and one was tested on a timegrapther to see if i'm not just doing stupid shit.

Watch keeps time well enough, that all being said, if you avoid QC issues.

Rather than pasting you could use thin film deposition, if you want to go high tech, and then seal it with glass or similar.

You could use a Sr isotope and it would glow like tritium but with a far longer half life.

Dopants also affect colour.

I have a box of strong lume, amazing stuff. I use it to make markers so I can find my way around whenever there is a power failure.

I think there could be an after market for multi coloured lume to give good readability without painful contrast. Amber hour markers on a deep red background and yellow hands are better than green hands and green dots for hour markers.

Avoid blue and violet if you are much more than 40 years old, yellow is better than green for the same reason.

>If, in the other hand, you encounter B, find it likeable and buy it because you want to wear it and you don't covet A at all, you'll get to enjoy the watch you have bought without more consideration.
This, plus personally I'd fucking hate to own a submariner or something. If I'm going to strap something to my wrist every day, it must be semi-disposable. As in: it is very nice if it lasts a long time, and I'd be disappointed at a watch that doesn't last some years, but it can't be too hurtful to bang around or even to lose. It must be more like a piece of clothing than jewelry, if that makes sense.

Thus I never even lust after non-dress watches that are more expensive than a couple hundred euros. A price too high is one of the worst caveats for a daily driver watch, to me.

thanks for the heads up, didn't know about burning the metal

would polishing it with a rag make any difference at all though? clearly you won't get to the point it is at that video.
is it some kind of synthetic/rubbery coating on the metal, or what?
>>

Polishing with a tool generally means you need to finish by hand after anyway.

Mother's mag polish and a rag will pretty much make anything shine.

Is the SKX007 a Submariner ripoff? I read that Seiko came up with the design first and then Rolex popularized it, but there was not a reliable source. Regardless, I feel self conscious thinking that everyone is assuming that I'm wearing a Submariner knockoff and is judging me based on it.

The Submariner came out in 1953. I believe the 62MAS (the first of Seiko's line of divers that eventually leads to SKX007) came out in 1965.

That being said, a cursory look over the two watches should reveal that the SKX is most certainly not a rip off of the Submariner. The case is different, the indices are different, the hands are different, the bezel is different both in insert and grip texture. SKX007 is the product of decades of Seiko diver design, not a ripoff of a rolex.

Well, the Rolex submariner got its design from the Blancpian 50 fathoms

The design for these watches are strictly serving a purpose for diving, so they are all pretty similar. Coin edged bezel for grip while use
Roating bezel with lume pip for dive timing
Black dial with large white indicies for legibility
Large hands covered in lume for legibility

Vostok are pretty much the only company to come up with an original diver design

>>
>>57009553
That star of Dafuq really made it more jewish than jews themselves. Let's not mention jihad hands.
>>
>>57021991
They're pretty good. Movement-wise, a cheap Rolex like an OP has a better, more robust movement then you'll find in many comparably priced Swiss watches (Nomos or Grand Seiko might be able to compete at that price point; Omega, for all their talk about METAS and coaxial magic, probably can't), though whether that really incremental benefit is worth the premium over a $500-$1500 watch is up to you. The more expensive, iconic Rolexes (sub, Daytona, Explorer, maybe DJ) are more questionable in terms of value, I'd argue. Their Cellini line has some excellently finished pieces, but at that point you're buying $12,000 jewellery that happens to have a $4000 watch's movement inside (not that that's rare at that price point).

Handling one I certainly get the sense they're built well and to last; if you like the look and aren't bothered by the assumptions people will make about you for wearing a Rolex, there's nothing really to object to.

>But that JLC is a step in the correct direction for /g/. Normally we have someone insisting a datejust or GS is a dress watch.

If there's a distinction it's a meaningless one. There is no situation where in would be inappropriate to wear a Datejust over something like a Master Moon.
>>
>>57023210
I made no claims about "inappropriate."

Even if we got to a point where our society was so casual it would not be "inappropriate" to show up to a white tie event in cargo shorts and hawaiian shirt, that doesn't make cargo shorts and hawaiian shirt a tuxedo. And it doesn't make a datejust not a sports watch.
>>
>>57023234
Formal wear is formal wear and casual wear is casual wear. The differences are recognized and obvious. Dress watches and sports watches have no such distinction outside of a jeweler's display case.

That's fine. We're talking about the world of watches and the distinctions there-in, even if those distinctions are lost on or pooly understood by those who live outside the "jeweler's display case" and are not concerned with the nuances within it, they still exist to us.

Drive whatever pleases you but if you wear that you'd be considered a pleb by watch knowers.
It's just a cheap fashion watch with "muh minimalism" DW tier design and a cheap 1€ quartz Chink movement.
If you want to get started in real watches look up Japanese brands like Seiko, Citizen and Orient, if possible automatic.
You may like the Orient Bambino which also has a minimalist design, is well built, has a decent automatic movement and is cheap (about 100€).

Is seiko 5 good for baby's first real watch? I heard it loses its accuracy unless you wear it everyday, is that true?

>>
>>57024113
Yes, and yes.
>>
>>57024113

define accuracy being lost?

automatic watches have to be worn/wound if the movement allows it to keep going once their power reserve is used up

seiko 5's usually dont have movements that wind, so you have to shake your wrist a few times to get the automatic movement going.

for $60-150USD there are a ton of Seiko 5 choices for you to get started and eventually addicted like everyone here

>>

Don't like the bezel, hands are somehow long, just too similar and too long, the movement is probably with a date, yet the dial is without cutout, bracelet doesn't match case finishing, or so it seems for me in that picture

So I've dropped my 1st watch (SNK809) and now it's gaining 2 minutes a day.

I have a warranty, so I'm sending it to Seiko for repair, but I'll have to wait 4 to 6 weeks.

In the meantime, to continue to explore and enjoy watches, I've treated myself with a Vostok Kommandirskie Tank that arrives tomorrow.

I'm a libertarian so I'll feel weird wearing a kommunist watch, but I could buy it for 40 euros thanks to free market.

Plus it looks good. Mother Russia, here I come!

Also, it seems that there are an awful lot of new blood joining in with all the SNK809's and Vostok's being bought.
>>
>>57025367
>Get a new strap while you're at it.

Yeah the Vostok strap looks terrible.

Fortunatelt I've bought two traps (brown leather and black NATO) for my SNK that are the same size (18 mm), so I'll replace it immediatly.

I did but I'm very clumsy (that's why I dropped it in the 1st place).

So if it's still gaining time after repair, I'll read/watch a ton of stuff on regulating and I'll train myself on the Vostok first.
