Yo /g/, what laptops do you recommend for working?
I don't want it for gaming at all (so the GPU is irrelevant), just for programming and office work. Are there any 'cheap' options?
I would like to hear your opinions.

Get a used work-laptop. There are companies refurbishing laptops (such as Thinkpads) if you don't want to go through the trouble of finding and refurbishing one yourself.

>>
>>56996337
Arround 300$?
But I'm open to other prices
>>56996371
2nd hand laptop? Is that worth it?
>>56996386
Aren't raspberry pi's a bit weak? Could I work in one of those?
>>
>>56996417
how long do you need the battery to last?

Used Dell latitudes, Thinkpads or HP Elitebooks are pretty good and you can get one with 8gb, i5-i7 and maybe even an ssd for quite cheap.
>>
>>56996417
If OP is still on this thread, I recommend an old thinkpad (T420 or X220), or if you are a stallman disciple, X200 or T400 for libreboot. I have all 4 dirt cheap off eBay, less than 200$ total. They make awesome productivity computers, very comfortable
>>
>>56996276
Chromebooks. Some are well under $200, like $100 something.

Ignore this shill, Chromebooks are garbage
>>
>>56996481
I don't need the battery to last for long.
>>56996488
So 2nd hand thinkpads are a solid option? hmm.
Could I install Debian and Windows on one of these? I'm sorry, I'm new to laptops, I don't even know if they have BIOS.
What about that raspberry pi laptop? It looks cheap and I've read you can do programming and office in those? Do you think they are a good option?
>>
>>56996542
Calm down. OP's only concern is obviously money dickweed.
>>
>>56996530
>>56996540
>>56996542
Don't you need permanent internet connection to work in one of those? I would also like to use debian on my laptop, could I change the OS?
>>
>>56996555
I'm perfectly calm. OP wants to program and work on it, Chromebooks are Facebook toys.

ThinkPads are pretty much /g/'s mascot for a reason. Visit the thinkpad general thread, everything you need to know is there and they can answer any questions you have about thinkpads. They're wonderful laptops and they don't cost shit.
>>
>>56996623
I'm gonna research more about those, thanks
I didn't even know that those laptops existed, thank you all for the info.

What is exactly that "libreboot" thing? Should I get a thinkpad with that in order to change it's OS?
>>
>>56996542
Seconding this. Chromebooks are plastic dirt made by hp or Acer, besides the Chromebook Pixel (which would be at 1500$).

Typing has never felt so good than when typing on a ThinkPad. ThinkPad + Dvorak + Vim or LaTeX is GOAT.
>>
At 300$ you may look into used/refurb. Brand new you wont find anything decent for under 450$
>>
>>56996839
I don't trust any used computer. You just never know, like used cars.
>>
>>56996698
Libreboot is a FOSS BIOS replacement. If you don't know what it is, you likely don't care. You don't need it to install different OSes, and flashing it yourself is no easy task. Pre-flashed Thinkpads can be bought, but they're ludicrously expensive compared to normal used units.
>>
>>56996852
Just change the disk (HDD or SSD) and install Ubuntu or whatever you want atop of Libreboot
>>
>>56996965
Do you have some doc about flashing Libreboot?
>>
I'm looking at the thinkpad x220 right now.
If I get one with a HDD, could I replace it with an SDD, myself, at home?
>>

>>
i was looking at refurbished laptops myself. ebay has refurbished xps 13s im looking into.
any anons have opinions on refurb dell stuff?
>>
>>56996698
if you live near a big city, keep an eye out for CL deals, there are often small offices selling off old inventory - you can get a very clean and very well-maintained computer (only office use) that was top-class relatively recently for a great price.
>>
>>56997029
sure, it's easy
>>
>>56996544
Yes you can, and it works fabulously. I use a X200 tablet because I'm required for classes to have handwritten notes. The T420/X220 has a bug so I could only get the ubuntu GRUB working properly (arch normal install didn't work) but after that it worked great. The T400/X200 series install all flawlessly. If you're into BSD those work great as well. All the devs typically use old thinkpads for *BSD so "nothin werks" isn't true in that case.

Raspberry pi is shit tier laptop. The processor is crap and less things work on it. The T420 is good enough to game if you use an eGPU. Since everything on thinkpad platform is modular and old as shit, it's also real cheap on eBay unlike raspberry pi. I use vim + i3 and it's great. Even X200 and T400 are good enough for nearly any task.

Also >inb4 thanks shill
I'm not shilling because I wouldnt make any money saying to bid on old thinkpads on eBay
>>
>>56997342
I went through the Archlinux install without problem on my T420 though.
>>
Thank you all for the information.
I think I'll get a x220.
>>
>>56997352
Lucky you. I got one with a stupid BIOS bug
>>
>>56996276
A fucking Chromebook.
Install your apps.
Get a large SD card.
And your Gucci.
>>
>>56997468
Is chromebook a 'meme' here? Are you guys saying this seriously or not?
>>
>>56997977
You have office, you have browser, you have a music player you can even install a few IDE's (all inside chrome though).
You can even have a small video player.

It's a cheap ass computer that does as advertised and nothing more.

It's the operating system for normies and for people who get distracted on all other OS's, heck I even CloudReady( ChromiumOS distro for PC) installed on my laptop.

x220. If my half-dead 6-cell battery can last four hours of writing text with IPS display, new 9-cell must hold, like, 10-12h.

But battery and other minor gimmicks aside: it has absolutely best keyboard i ever used in laptops. I wrote my master thesis on it and haven't felt urge to switch to PC even once. It's just so fucking perfect, keys are close to each other, travel distance is long (for laptop standards), it has classic non-square shape, and nipple in the middle allows to use mouse comfortably when needed. It's near perfection when it comes to ergonomy.

>b-but it's 4chan meme
Even /g/ gets something right from time to time, this is surely one of those things.

What version do you have? with an i5 or an i7?
Does the i7 version make a lot of difference?
>>
I write for a living. I hate being cooped up in my flat on my desktop all the time though. Is there a cheap, light laptop with a good keyboard I could get? I already have a heavier laptop (old samsung q430) and a desktop so I don't really want to spend much money if I can.

Are there any chromebooks that are good for typing on? Seems like they mostly skimp on this aspect.
>>
>>57001741
I have i5, I heard i7's are overheating. I tried playing Souls 2 on my x220 and it was really hot, so i wouldn't be suprised if i7's would overheat completely and throttle.
>>
>>57001775
And for non-gaming? Do you think there's a noticeable difference?
>>
>>57001768
Everybody loves the thinkpad x220 for its keyboard
>>
>>57001768
Thinkpads have the best laptop keyboards hands down, anything X series will do
>>
>>57001803
I doubt it. If i'm correct, laptop i5-i7 difference is only clock speed. And when it comes to everyday work, second-gen laptop i5 is plenty. I'm writing apps in Android Studio on this laptop and i can even run emulator without getting laggy at all.
>>
>>57001835

Looks like an excellent idea and for 200£ used I can't look past this option. The only thing is maybe it's too heavy.
