What's the point of lossless music when all sound is noisy? You can tune an instrument all you want, but it will never be a perfect sine wave at a single frequency. Not to mention there will obviously be noise in recording equipment as well.
>>
>>56984680
this is not about noise but about compression
>>
>>56984680
t.
someone who has never listened to lossless surround sound music.
>>
>>56984680
lossless music is about getting a 100% identical duplicate of what was on the original retail audio CD. The quality of the music is another story.

there is absolutely zero need for lossy audio in 2016.
>>
>>56985437
you forgot to add:
Especially right now because analog audio is dying.
>>
>>56984680
>What's the point of lossless music when all sound is noisy?
To preserve the original.

>You can tune an instrument all you want, but it will never be a perfect sine wave at a single frequency.
Of course and that's not even what you want from an instrument. How is this related? Is this a bait thread?`

>Not to mention there will obviously be noise in recording equipment as well.
Yes and? See the first point. That is why lossless exists.

Now riddle me with entirely digitally produced music. Actually don't, same idea applies.

lmaoing at people immediately making the connection with lossless and compression audibility.

MP3 VBR is fine (assuming you don't need further processing). For listening is fine.
>>
>>56984680

There is no need for FLAC. 320 VBR mp3 is perfectly fine. The only time Lossless formats are needed for is recording music in a DAW such as Cubase/Protools.

128 and 192 mp3 sounds like crap though.

This is one of the most retarded statements I have ever heard.
>>
>>56987064
yeah no. my hearing is shit but even i can hear the difference between the original and a shitty mp3. at least use a decent codec like vorbis for lossy. regardless, i use lossless for audio because theres just no need to deteriorate data on save. i use png and lossless tif for images too whenever sensible
>>
>>56991060
actually yes
music is pure math

Fucks up worse than MP3. Shifts higher frequencies on the lower spectrum.
>>
>>56984680
You clearly lack 18 years life experience, but the five year old answer is, your ears are not perfect either, so a small amount of corruption isn't noticeable, but a large amount is unless your ears are fucked.
>>
>>56992696
i like opus too but it uses more cpu for decoding (bad for portables) and its intention is for streaming
>>
>>56984680
What do I do to my audio to make the file the perfect balance of good quality and small size?
Like I just found out about video stuff, theres containers like mkv and mp4 but those arnt video formats like x264, and that if you encode with xx265 you get a file that is the exact same quality but less than half the size.

What advancements have been made in music files since the 1990s? Does music come in container files?
>>
>>56984680
I have nearly all my music in FLAC, but it's mainly for archival reasons.
>>
>>56985437
>there is absolutely zero need for lossy audio in 2016.
Might be useful for streaming or whatever, but what really bugs me is retards who still use MP3 for some reason, even though there's both OGG and now OPUS that are better in every single way. There's not a single reason to use MP3 unless you have some ancient hardware player.

I can't find half of my music in flac. where do I get it for free?
>>
>>56993576
I have no idea why sceners or whoever uploads music nowadays still use MP3, but I never have any issues finding FLAC myself. For those CDs too obscure, I simply have to rip them myself.

Pls no bully, I use mp3 for my shitty portable media player. I have all the files in lossless format on my PC and could easily convert it to opus, AAC or Vorbis. My shitty media players battery life would get worse if I switched which is why I avoid it.
>>
>>56993643
How ancient is your portable media player?
>>
>>56993700
It's a crappy Clip Sport. All the battery claims on the box are only valid for mp3.
The software does support other formats as well but it definitely drains the battery faster.
>>
>>56993765
Seriously? Other players in Sandisk's Clip line have been well-known for good support of FLAC, might only apply to when they run Rockbox though.
>>
Best software for converting music?
Always used dbpoweramp, but doesn't support opus

What a stupid statement. Bandwidth isn't free and will never be. Transparency is a thing too. Why waste bandwidth on stuff that has absolutely no effect on the listening? This is especially true for streaming and mobile use. It's 2016 you know.
>>56985658
All audio is analog. You can store and process audio with digital signals but in the end it is converted back to analog. Analog storage is a nice collectors thing now and has been for quite a while.
>>
>>56994605
yew, streaming and such are legit cases. Large storage and not wanting to needlessly compromise on quality are real too

it is relatively free
ISP all for it =>more reliable money
users don't care 100mbs is lower limit these days
hdds are cheap you can afford more than 5 tb of space easily
>>
I'm surprised you don't see more Opus audio online.
>>
>>56987195
While I can immediately tell SD from HD video the music is not so easy.
192kbps vs 320 isn't that dramatic of a difference as that picture quality jump
>>

blame the big companies, theyre all phobic of doing anything right

there is no transparent lossy without a lossless version.
