I totally believe. I worked in semiconductor manufacturing for a bit. The companies that produce digital IC's are fucking cutthroat. When Samsung and Apple decided to design and produce their own IC's for their phones they essentially claimed half the market for digital IC's and that left the rest of the companies to compete for the last half. The smaller foundries were able to afloat by ripping off the tech produced by the bigger companies. The companies that do R&D have to shovel money into development and see very little return because of the short shelf life of digital IC's and how quickly they can be reverse engineered. companies like Samsung are super shitty to work at. Its like any of the tech companies that produce incredible products they suck all the creativity and life out their engineers and spit out the empty husks after a couple years to make room for fresh engineers.

If AMD goes, that's it as far as graphics cards are concerned. Nvidia will be the only option and charge whatever they like for an ever more niche product.

Hell, we've already seen that in recent times with the 1080 priced like a Ti and the Titan XP only affordable for gods and kings. And that's just without any direct AMD competition in that one sector of the market for 6-8 months. It'll be far worse when there's no competition at all.

Who the hell do you think is going to enter the GPU market? R&D, marketing, optimization for every modern game, and trying to get contracts with companies who likely already have invested years and millions with Nvidia.

There's a reason why companies were buying up other companies in that industry back in the early 2000's (Nvidia buying 3dfx, AMD buying ATI), it saved them millions of dollars of R&D and licensing for patented technology.

And before you say it, no Matrox won't fucking save us from the corporate giant that Nvidia has become once AMD bites the dust.
