Hi /g/ I found an old laptop, it's missing the charger,

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Hi /g/
I found an old laptop, it's missing the charger, but i found one that almost fits
It boots, but the hard drive sounds like it has sand in it everytime it spins
Should i just try and nuke the drive and install whatever or is it possible to swap it to a newer one?
>>
clean the top with a wet paper towel

you should probably swap the HDD, but I doubt it'll break anything else if the HDD dies after some use, so might as well try to wipe it and see if it works before buying another one
>>
Nice find, OP! What's the model number? Should be shown on the inside by the right hinge. Probably starting with X or T.

It says it's a T40 type 2374
It came with pic related too
I managed to get it to the login screen, but the passwords are not default, so i guess the XP enterprise is worthless

I'm not exactly a computer guy, but a friend who browses here told me you like these old workstations and i really need all the help i can get
>>
>>56966163
Yeah, we love ThinkPads here. If you want some experts to help you out, definitely post about this in ThinkPad General.

It's good it came with the dock. Those can be surprisingly expensive, and they're awesome to have. ThinkPads are pretty tough, so I'm sure this thing will still be pretty usable despite it looking like it does.

Also i found this, a braille typing aid, a Texas instruments calculator (with cartridges!) and Shrek 1 in dvd
>>
Also, an OG DS, its ROM cart thingy, two spare batteries (one of which is fatter), a lamp, an external disk bay and lots of cables
>>
>>56966163
If you configure it right, it can be an incredible machine for things like light browsing (no heavy JS applications or Flash), word processing, learning/tinkering with sysadmin/programming, running light local services (mpd, dlna, torrents, etc). Especially if you replace the HDD and get more RAM.
>>
If you want to make it useable swap the useless slow HDD for an SSD. You won't believe how much it impacts performance.

You can get chargers for it from ebay for next to nothing. They are cheap and so widely available no matter where you are.

If you want a battery for it, get one from aliexpress. Costs you less than $20, you just have to wait a month for it.

Old thinkpads are perfect for Linux experimenting.

I was thinking of this + taking notes in class
My other laptop lasts barely 4:30 and i need at least 6 hours

Those settings are written in italian... I thought to be the only shitposter with a ThinkPad in the whole peninsula

We can shitpost together if you want now
>>
>>56966278

If you are using it for taking notes you have to install Linux for it, because the processor is painfully slow and you don't have much memory to play with.

You can have a ready set distro but if you want to keep things light, Arch Linux and a window manager will keep the memory consumption low but give you best performance.
>>
>>56966312

eyyy
>>
>>56966322
I can take notes with just nano, that should cut down on the memory consumption, right?

Neat find OP
I've got a T42, R52, R30, X40 Tablet and a THICCPAD G40
I also still have my gen 1 DS

Replace the hard drive, maybe add some ram and install something like Ubuntu with LXDE or XFCE for a light browsing machine. Depending on the dedicated GPU that motherboard has, you can maybe do light oldschool gaming on it. If it has an XP key on it still, get a recovery XP disk and reinstall XP on a new drive.
I play Empire Earth, The Sims, SWAT 3 and Halo Combat Evvolved on my T42 which has been upgraded to a 2ghz Pentium M, 2gb of ram, but only has the 32mb of VRAM ATI chip

Replacing a drive will be cheap, adding more ram is usually like 10$ a sodimm, and if you have a cd and another computer you can make an XP install disk
>>
>>56966798
The battery is probably dead, they're cheap on eBay.

Also while I'm thinking about it, to answer your first question, it is very easy to change the hard drive, since it's in a caddy. There should be one screw on the bottom of a small plastic cover on one of the sides near the palm rests, take that screw off and you should be able to pull the entire HDD out in its caddy
Then you can change out the HDD in the caddy and then slide the caddy with the new drive back in

Note, old shit like this still uses PATA, not SATA, don't buy any 2.5" drive you find, because it has to be 44 pin pata IDE

i would strongly suggest dwm/xmonad if you you can handle limited ("only what you actually need") functionality from a wm and don't need to use a mouse 90% of the time, fluxbox if you like using your mouse for things.

why not openbox?

because fluxbox has more flux, habibi.
also xml is satan.
also window tabbing.
also more aesthetic theming possibilities.
also built-in panel.
>>

it's easy to use and if you don't want to interface with it directly you can use obconf

can you provide pics? openbox has themes and most things are covered by your gtk theme anyway

I was about to say something about the DS being scuffed up, but I realized mine has had a broken upper-screen since about 2008 when I ran face-first into a door as it was closing on me. Most of the damage was to the DS because it was in a backpack.

fluxbox config format is cleaner to edit

>what is this?
pic related

most fluxbox themes are admittedly crap, but there are a few resources with good ones, and all window decorations and menus are skinnable. i only know from reading comparisons, but it said that openbox does not allow as much pixmap skinning. it is imho the best non-tiling wm if you (like a normal person) don't need bells and whistles like compositing or de services.

Where do you guys "find" these?
Do you search on Amazon or do you LITERALLY find them somewhere in a trash or something.
>>

Found this as a neighbour was emptying his garage
You should look in junkyards though, especially specialized ones
That's how i find bike parts, for instance

Ah. That is cool, I suppose.

The config looks clean and simple also. Everything is a bit ugly, though.

well, you don't even have window decorations, so gtk theme is everything. I'm still on gtk2 because fuck 3, I don't need it, and I use some Qt apps as well, so I'm not super concerned with having everything match since it's a pain in the ass when you have multiple widget and decoration libraries. in terms of functionality though, I love the clean config and tabbed windows make my life much easier. and if i ever have the time to go full ricer mode it is very straightforward to reskin window decorations and menus.

also it comes standard with the full install of Slackware, the one true Linux.
