He already has a payment system in place that lets people buy passes.

It took about 350k to load the front page of /g/.
It takes about 88k to view this thread.

Assuming that all pageviews are 350k (they're not), and that we get 620M monthly pageviews, we get about 200TB in transit, a far cry from the 2.8 PB of bandwidth consumed in a month.

The rest can obviously be attributed to images. The solution is to implement a cap on filesize (I'd say 300k), and then buy your transit/servers on whatever the budget allows. 4chan isn't a typical website, and users will stay if it takes a little longer to load a page. We're not like your average website that needs to entice users with lightning fast load times and huge fancy graphics.

In practice this is how 8ch works already. There are a few big, stable boards, and a bunch of tiny circlejerks no one cares about.

The main driver of sustainable new board creation is when one of the main boards gets fed up with its moderation. If enough posters get pissed off at the mods (since the mods are board-specific), creating a new board lets them throw the mods out and keep the posters and culture. The GG boards and I think the various /pol/s have done this a few times; it seems like a good way to let drama evaporate without letting it drag down the site.
