no UPS tread? lets get one started.

what UPS do you guys use? been wanting to get one for my gaming rig, but compared to owning a gaming laptop.. having something that lasts for 1h+ really kills your wallet

None. I don't need one, but I want one.

I have an Eaton 5P1500 or something like that. Works nice.

are those harddrive mounts? sweet jesus.

and i trough my 8bay nas was overkill

>having something that lasts for 1h+ really kills your wallet

That's not what UPS units are for – they are for allowing you to save your work and ensure your systems shut down safely so that all data is committed to disk.

There's no point having one for a gaming machine – it's only worth it if you run critical business machines, servers, NAS appllicances, and so on.

APC br1500g

It sits behind my monitors and it's great because while we dont get too many power outages everytime it storms hard we have 1 or 2 short flickers where things turn off for a moment.

My UPS can sustain me for up to 15-25 minutes of normal use so even short poweroutages are no issue and gives me plenty of time to shutdown.

They're Dell T620s.
>>

check it out, it's that bixnood loser
>>
I have a Cyberpower one, don't recall the model off hand. Rated for 900 watts output and works well, has a lcd screen to monitor power usage.

It's come in handy multiple times. Has enough battery life to charge both my phone and laptop twice easily if the power is out which is really handy.
>>
why, united postal service of course :)

HAHA!!! got you :) just a little joke us sysadmins like to throw around xD
>>
I use a 750VA AEG Protect B. Not the most powerful thing, but it's really cheap.
>>
Hello third world!

>>56925118
Critical stuff usually runs off of gensets when the power goes out.
>>
>>56925118
UPS are also for power conditioning in case of rolling brownouts, and also actually protect against lightning strikes.
>>
Have one I stole from my old job, battery died a few months back. Need a replacement.
>>
Do you guys have a lot of power outages? Where do you live? Why?
>>
>>56927628
The united states has very large sections of the country with above-ground electrical grids, car accident happens and a car takes down a poll? Power outage. Tree goes down across the wire? Power outage. Heavy storm? Power outage.

Some areas mainly large cities and suburbs of such cities will have at least part of the grid in underground conduit, but it isn't widespread across the country. Not like you see in europe anyway.
>>
>>56926795
>UPS are also for power conditioning
Only double conversion UPSes do this and they are rare in consumer environments.
>>
>>56927628
When I was growing up my parents house got struck by lightning twice in the span of 5 years, both times completely frying our desktop, ever since they have used UPS and so have I myself.

Overly paranoid maybe, but fuck lightning.

cyberpower cp1500epfc or some shit

only had it maybe six months and its served me well so far

if you want a really long runtime, look at buying an older ups and replacing the battery with something much larger (there's info around the internets of people hooking up deep cycle rv batteries to get hours of runtime on the cheap)
>>
>>56927628
Some of us are renting in older places with weak outlet circuits.

If my wife tries to use the microwave and toaster at the same time, for example, the breaker will trip in less than a minute. UPS gives me plenty of time to step outside and reset it without losing anything on my desktop
>>
what's there to talk about? it's a fucking ups
>>
Been using a cyberpower 600w ups for my living room / PC. Still kicks in when power goes out once a year and gets like 15min of runtime. Had it 5 years.
>>
>>56928436
I think I use that one too

has saved me a ton of problems, survived a lightning strike, multiple brown outs and black outs

I doubt my PC would be alive now without it

CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD is the only one you should even get for basic home use if you have a mid to high end system. As said they aren't meant to be used for a long duration just a few to ten minutes or so depending on the load and model. That unit is also real sinewave output which is optimal and usually only in more expensive units. All cheaper units in similar sizes are not true sinewave.
>>
Is Cyberpower good?
>>
>>56931572
from what i hear, yes. but im not sure if the cheaper ones supports sinus wave or not

I bought APC Back-UPS 1100VA/660W (can't remember the exact model) back in 2012 for $175. It never failed me and still works great. The battery life is good, I can run my PC (+monitor and router) for 40-60 minutes of normal use, or more than one day (maybe even two) if it's only a router.

Yes, Cucknada, because we only pay 50% of our income in taxes instead of 99% so that's not enough to get us reliable electricity in the middle of a big city.
>>
haha i just picked up a cyberpower 1500VA unit on Amazon, got my computers and a monitor plugged into it.

I plugged in the kettle today and it tripped the breaker, computer stayed on though! <3

Working photographer here, whole state went out power during a severe storm event because of gommie state government's over reliance on "renewable" energy.

Thankfully I had the foresight to properly shutdown and unplug everything before the storm.

What's a decent UPS for my i7 4790K/GTX 980/dual monitor system? Would only need the bare essentials, just enough to safely shutdown and save my work, but obviously as long of on-time as possible would be even better.

System power requirements are pic related.
>>
>>56935702
My 5820k/GTX960/dual monitor setup has about 20-30 minutes of run time using an APC 1500VA unit.

Cost about $130 on sale.
>>
>>56935702
That is such bullshit, the power went out because the state inter-connector was blown over by the biggest storm in 50 years. Wind farms don't make wind, despite looking like big fans.
>>
>>56935924
>That is such bullshit
Gommie cunt detected

Yeah, let's destroy our cheapest and most reliable form of energy for something that's affected by the weather and just in case, we have to rely on another state to produce peak power!

Fucking dumb cunt.

KYS
>>
>>56936109
Are you stupid? That's how an electrical grid SHOULD work, you'd be wasting literally billions of dollars if you wanted to be 100% self sufficient. Almost every state in the US doesn't produce enough energy to meet peak demand, they borrow from states.

It's why Hillary wants to improve our nations electrical grid and create a smart grid that can more quickly and easily route power to where it is needed in the country.

Renewable energy is the future, to claim otherwise is ignorant or you're simply ignoring whatever happens after you die because you'll be dead and don't care about the species as a whole.

Not to mention, renewable energy can come from geothermal, hydro-electric, etc. Nothing says you have to use solar and or wind.

APC BackUPS 1500 connected to server with 1000-watt power supply and 17" CRT monitor. Gives approximately 20 minutes of battery time which is more than enough for an automatic shutdown.
>>

>>
>>56935702
You'd be fine with a cheapo APC
>>
>>56936538

my UPS is behind my monitor there, you can just see it in the bottom corner.
>>
>>56924199
Don't need one. We don't have brownouts in the Netherlands and the power almost never goes out.
>>
>>56936153
>Nothing says you have to use solar and or wind.
Except greenfags, who either love that shit despite it being a joke or are paid shills for it

>>56935702
the cyberpower unit mentioned a few times above will do you nicely (or an APC equivalent)

I've got the cyberpower one with a heavily overclocked 3930k(4.7ghz = like 200w at full noise)+dual 27" monitors+gtx780 and it'll give me 15-20 mins in a total outage with my normal power consumption (drawing 200-300w most of the time)

I bought it more for surge protection (I've seen what a lightning strike does to this shit) but living in an older house it's nice not getting fucked if someone trips a breaker
>>
>>56937124
>I bought it more for surge protection
Then you're pretty dumb, almost no consumer UPS will provide good enough isolation to protect you from an actual lightning strike, you need a dedicated surge protector that is rated for something like that.

You can plug the UPS into the surge protector.
>>
I have a powervar abce1100-11, the ground guard version. I have my computer which has a 750 watt psu, AMD 8370e clocked at 4.8ghz, and R9 270x. Oh and have three Dell monitors that draws around 25-55 watts each and some crappy Toshiba TV. Gives me enough time to shut down my pc but haven't tested the run time since I have some crappy thrift store batteries in it. Suppose to have two 12v 12ah but I have two 12v 7ah batteries.

>>
Do UPS draw more energy than they use like PSUs?
>>
>>56940872
Maybe 5-10w, nothing like a monitor (~20-40w), or a TV (50-150w), or similar large electronic device.

All it powers is the LCD screen and the basic controller unit inside.
>>
>>56940909
So any UPS that is from APC or Cyberpower will do and i dont have to worry about something like the 80+ standard?
>>
>>56930908
I have the 900 model, twice. Powers my computer for 10 minutes under full load. Powers my network gear for 60 minutes under full load. They are fantastic and saved my ass a number of times.
>>
>>56940936
No they effect none of the efficiency of your PSU, they will add a few watts of power draw because of their internal electronics, but that's it.
>>
Do UPS really help at saving power or its just fake advertising?
>>
I use Piller, flywheel based instead of batteries. Only 13 seconds of ride/thru power before diesel have to kick in.

I got a UPS for free from my grandparents. Their old ISP made them buy it, but whoever installed it never removed the tape from the battery powered ports, so it was working as a glorified surge protector. I also got a cheap UPS for my server.
>>
>>56926391
UPS the shipping company is United Parcel Service, for once in your life you could have been something more than a failure, couldn't even make a joke without failing at that.
>>
>>56927628
Only during really bad thunderstorms or hurricanes
>>
If my computer uses 450W+40W monitor, should i get a 500W UPS or a 600W UPS?
