Should I get a 256GB SSD or just get a 1TB harddrive? I currently just have a 126 or w/e SSD and that's it. Which is fine-ish, but I'm starting to do more video stuff and those take up a fuckton of space. I think I can manage on 256 extra gigs, especially because I don't film anything long, and I delete the raw footage after I have a finished video. However. 1TB would be nice and for half the price, it seems like the better choice. Editing raw footage from an ssd would be quite faster though.

save up for 500gb ssd
kinda dumb buying an HDD in 2016 unless its strictly for storage

After using both HDDs and SSDs for long periods of time on different applications I can tell you that it's not an easy decision.

If it's for you get the ssd. If it's for your mom get the hdd.
Is this a laptop or desktop?
Desktop get the HDD, you can probably use the storage more than the speed that the SSD would offer.
If a laptop, you could probably use the SSD better.

As long as you don't care about boot times, you could get a small and fast SSD and use it as a cache device.
That way you could work on your latest project with SSD-like speeds but still have the capacity of a HDD.

Yes. You need another drive in order to make backups.

My opinion?
Just get an 120 Gb SD and an 1Tb HDD for storage!
