So when I tabbed through the cam an my dualboot chink tablet there was a pic of a middle aged chinese woman probably from QC testing the front cam, but the pic itself was not saved on the tablet and after tabing fully into the preview of chinese mum was gone.

Gave my H101 a try today, I'd say I did not expect it to be this fun, although I've spent around 30 minutes looking for a place to lift off and the battery ran dry in 5-10 minutes, but it was worth it

You can check with the mi pc suit whether it's unlocked. Although I have never heard of one coming unlocked.
Don't even try to check for chink adware, just flash global stable if you want to use your phone normally.
Certain versions of CM13 work nicely but you should at least know a bit about android / cm / custom recoveries if you want to flash that.
