What the fuck was the point of this? Performance is reduced in every computer that I've tested it on.

XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 are operating systems

There is no point.

Get Linux and run windows XP inside a VM optionally. That's the /g/ way

you guys actually use Linux?

There is. They forgot to add botnet code on early versions and realised Google's business model is the best.
>>
>>56798448
Tested in what sense, give me one single metric that you've actually tested because there is a huge wealth of information online about Windows 10's performance benefits (quite literally the only good thing about it)

also if you're retarded enough to think you need windows just install ubuntu

peace

Windows 10 is honestly the best OS of the current year. I have OSX at work and Linux at home but with bash on Windows 10 I am switching over. It really is the best of both worlds.

Fair point, but still better than mac or iOS, BTW does anyone have an idea on how to reimage a iPad with windows 10 but keep the drivers working?
>>
>>56798567
Of course, here in my uni department, linux is the standard operating system, pretty much every single professor uses it, even the ones who have macbooks.

Maybe it's because it's the physics department, and linux is obviously the default operating system for scientific computing.
>>
>>56799989
So what's your suggestion, should I just wipe the hard-drive and install a different OS? I was thinking windows or Ubuntu
>>
10 isn't that bad, i'd just rather use linux because it can do everything except faster albeit with more of a learning curve
unless you wanna play games or need an application or driver thats windows exclusive and can't figure out usb passthrough

I'd recommend you to try a linux install and see how you like it, otherwise you can always try a dual boot setup.

I'm more of a mint guy though, guess I just like green.

When it comes to windows though, I prefer windows 7.

I havent noticed any difference between it and 8.1 really, and 8.1 was considerably faster than 7 on the 3 or 4 machines I installed it on. Boots in like 10 seconds from power on to desktop, everything I use on a day to day basis opens in like a second, no real delay when searching files, etc. Although Im not running it on a toaster so I really have no idea how it works on shitty computers

>>Laggier than XP
It's a newer OS. XP is laggier than 98, and 98 is laggier than 3.1, which is laggier than DOS.

>>Laggier than 7
In my experience 10 usually runs better than 7, at least on machines from the past few years. However, you have to give 10 some time to itself. Either leave it idle, locked, or in sleep. It'll wake up and do its maintenance and update things then. Don't let it and it will be forced to do it while you're using it, which makes it very laggy.

>>Laggier than 8
>>Laggier than 8.1
Yes, very. 8.1 is just a somewhat lighter 10 with less forced things and a shittier version of Metro.

>>Probably even laggier than Vista
Dunno. Never had the misfortune of using Vista very much.

I don't need to grasp anything. You're just fucking retarded. All bash for Windows serves is an alternate shell and a translation between Linux applications and the NT kernel. That's it. It's not "Linux." It's a piece of software that Microshit ported and modified to make them look more "Linux friendly" when it really has nothing to do with the Linux kernel itself.

This is a deficiency in the Linux to Windows system call translation layer. Apt-get update && apt-get upgrade pulls packages from the same Ubuntu repos that real Ubuntu 14.04 uses. A patch there wouldn't be the fix. The fix is a change to the LXSS system files on Windows, which would come through Windows Update, not apt.

Nevertheless I've upgraded the Ubuntu userland inside it. Needless to say it didn't fix it.
>>
>>56798620
>4GB of ram used
GTFO
>>
>>56801603
It adapts to the machine it's on. On my 16 GB machine, it's using 1.9 after boot and hovers around 3-4 when idle. On my 4 GB netbook, it's at just under 1 GB after boot and idles around 1.8 GB. Those figures don't include disk cache. Including it, RAM is usually nearly 100% full, as it should be.

>>56801572
I don't care if ping doesn't work from inside bash. Neither do ifconfig, iptables, route... And why should they? This isn't a VM, there is no Linux kernel. It's basically reverse Wine, a loader to run arbitrary Linux binaries directly on Windows, unmodified.

You don't expect Control Panel to do much of anything in Wine. Why would you expect system level utilities to work in this?

And if I want to ping, I can just open cmd and do ping/t google.com from there.

hello anon, I'm not the person you replied to but just wanted to point out that the person you replied to was using the 'Jeopardy answering things with a question' meme, but is too young to have seen jeopardy. See on Jeopardy you pick an answer by specifying a category and dollar amount off a matrix. "'S' Words for $500!", you say. Then Mr Trebek reads the answer, "This software company was worth $527 billion a year ago.", then you ask a question to answer it, like "What is Google?". The person to whom you are responding just got everything jumbled up because he is a retarded person.

Have a nice day, anon.
