Does anyone upload anything other than cheese pizza and malware on these things
>>56781339
probably. I imagine that is how some of the collections have been grown.
>People upload things they like and want others to see

>Other people just waste time at work organising things
>>56777848
funny, I was just going through a harddrive from years ago and came across that same image. I havnt seen it posted in ages.
Also kind of funny how these kids dont think anything of "9 tb" while back then that much storage was almost unheard of.
>>56781339
No, its nothing but cp and malware, TIME TO BAN FTP
>>56781579
well they do upload FLACs too, i got some nice vinyl rip of vivaldi's 4 seasons, thanks to whoever uploaded that, and plastic beach by the gorrillaz
>>56779989
I have to explain this like twice a week: Deleting means overwriting something. You don't remove bytes from the disk when you delete it, you change them (write operations).
Also the operating of these things is really a fulltime job with all the russians and shitters trying to serve malware from your stuff. Running botnet virtual operating systems on your FTP and shit.
I set up a cron job to purge any of like... 50+ windows executable formats on my ftp, shit took forever to pull together lol
>>56782128
>vinyl rip of vivaldi's 4 seasons
I need that
This seems like a really nice idea but I cant tell what worthwhile files there are to download or what needs to be uploaded or what I can't just get from other sources

I looked through all four servers adn didnt find it.

>>56783013
LIke I said earlier, I saw that in a drive I havnt touch in many years not too long ago, noones posted it since. At the time this was made 9tb was unheard of. It was literally google tier storage.
>>56783058
yea, i know, i've seen it floating around for a long time
iirc my biggest drive when i first saw it was 80G
>>56777848

I was in the gentoo ftp for a second but i only got an image.
>>56783102
Ive still got a stack of 10, 20, and 60 gb maxtors and seagates. My main drive is sata II.
>>56783231
What's your oldest and highest capacity drive? I've got 80GB Maxtor from 2000.
>>56777848
now there's a pic I haven't seen in years
>>56783246
oldest and highest capacity are conflicting.
Id have to look at the oldest ones. My highest capacity would be some 2tbs from about 2010.
Im about to replace all of my drives. Im going with 4 tb wds for storage and ssds for my os and frequently used files. I've been purging and compressing data for the last week.
>>56783375
Basically, what I meant was what's the oldest drive you have with a shocking capacity for the time (take, for example, the 80GB/2000 drive I mentioned.)
>>56783293
>>56783058
>>56783039

Users don't have delete or overwrite access to any files, so moving things to read only isn't needed.
Also I'm the only one organizing shit so it goes slow. People have volunteered to help me organize but once they realize the way I'm willing to get their help doesn't give them delete/overwrite access to the files they've all magically lost interest.
>>56781339
A bunch of cool shit has been uploaded, and no cheese pizza that I've seen. Someone has been uploading the good ol' Photo.scr to a lot of directories, but I delete them all routinely.
>>56784197
So in what way were you wanting help?
Also can you not whitelist IPs to have modify access?
>>56777848

>>56784197
Dat Photo.scr and the info.zip are ftp bane. I don't even mind people setting up crazy network filesystems. Still delete their shit, but they're a tad more clever.
>>56784244
>Photo.scr and the info.zip
explain plese
>>56784258
They're executable files that aren't .exe
Windows runs a lot of things through arbitrary executing things, zip files have like an autorun tier thing in them, screensavers are executed to do random shit, there's a million of them.
Anyway the russians host their malware anywhere they can so they acn bypass blacklists.
>>56784224
I told them to write bash scripts with mv commands and I'd look over them and run them.
I could give people overwrite access, but I'd have to trust them. All it takes is 1 fag to act nice on the IRC channel for a week and offer to help and then delete everything, so unless some of the people I trust are willing to help, no one gets access.
>>56784244
They're not that bad, just mildly annoying.
>>56784258
I've encountered Photo.scr, it's a malware that's older than some people here.

It should be visible outside your network unless your router is blocking.
Try lftp, better client.

>>56789009
I agree. It was mom's Wifi, set up by dad like 10 years ago. Nobody knows the router password and it just werks so I didn't bother fixing it before.
>>56789076
yeah, it shouldn't. Just letting you know.
Also, any reason you're running the server on your phone? Do you hate yourself?
>>56788941
it has a default user/password, you have to enter that in ftp.ftp ftp://[email protected]:2121
>>56789111
Just wanted to try using something other than MTP to move files between phone and computer.
>>56789112
I'll try that as well. I was under the impression that ftp just queries for the username if none is supplied though, at least it does that when accessing the uni FTP server or >>56788919
>>56789130
Why not just put the server on your computer like a normal person?
Also sshfs would have been better.
>>56789148
a) If I want to move files between the phone and a different device, it also needs to have an FTP server installed.
b) I prefer typing on a physical keyboard so it makes sense to run the client on the PC.
It's not like the FTP server is running all the time, I literally only switch it on when I want to move files.
> sshfs
I haven't yet looked into how to set it up.
>>56789171
>a) If I want to move files between the phone and a different device, it also needs to have an FTP server installed.
Or you could transfer it to the machine with the server and then to any other machine.
>b) I prefer typing on a physical keyboard so it makes sense to run the client on the PC.
You can just ssh into your phone and do it.
>I haven't yet looked into how to set it up.$ sshfs IP /mount/dir
rocket surgery.
>>56789205
>Or you could transfer it to the machine with the server and then to any other machine.
Adds an unneccessary extra step, plus I don't have my PC with me when I'm at a friend's house and just want to copy some shit to / from his PC. Yes I could do it over the internet but then the FTP server would have to be running all the time (insecure and requires PC to be running all the time, which I don't want).
>You can just ssh into your phone and do it.
Okay, hypothetical scenario. I'm at uni, working on a lab report with a friend and he needs a photo I took with my phone.
I could just turn on the FTP server on the phone, connect via friend's pc over LAN and copy the file.
Or I could
> leave my pc running at home
> set up the FTP server to be accessible from outside the LAN
> leave the FTP server running for anyone to fuck with
> fire up SSH on friend's pc
> connect to phone via SSH
> connect to FTP server from phone through SSH
> copy file from phone to pc via FTP
> connect to FTP server from friend's PC
> copy the file
Now tell me, which would you rather do?
> sshfs IP /mount/dir
That's what I do on the client, yes. Don't I need to set up permissions and the server first though? Or do I quite literally just
>friend@friend'sPC:~$ sshfs global.IP.home.PC/home/anon/Videos/furry_porn /mount/sshfs_directory
and that's it?
>>56789310
alright, you know what you're doing with your own setup best.
>That's what I do on the client, yes. Don't I need to set up permissions and the server first though? Or do I quite literally just
No, that's the beauty of sshfs, no configuration. Only thing the server needs is to be running a ssh server. And seeing as you're running linux you must already have setup, else you've been missing out huge time buddy.
From sshfs's man page:sshfs [user@]host:[dir] mountpoint [options]
>>56789421
So that'd befriend@friend'sPC:~$ sshfs you@yourIP:/home/anon/Videos/furry_porn /mount/sshfs_directory
>>56789421
>Only thing the server needs is to be running a ssh server.
That's the bit I don't know about yet. How do I set this up?
>you've been missing out huge time
Seems like it, I only made the switch 6 months ago and wanted to get accustomed to local terminal work before fucking around with networking.
>>56789472
Well ssh is one of the most useful shit ever boi
You been liking your terminal? comfy isn't it? Now imagine in that same terminal you can be at any computer's terminal you own. You just type ssh ip and through the magic of Hollywood you're now at your other computer. Fucking magic.
Any computer running linux will likely have a ssh server running by default. For windows and your phone you'll likely have to install something but it shouldn't be too hard. OSX has ssh, I'm not sure if it runs by default though.
First time here, is there anything interesting in your read only files? I just see porn and boring videos
