Assuming the same pixel density, how bad does the upscaled resolution vs the native version of that resolution look?

It looks worse.
For some reason most monitors won't upscale 1:4 even if you are directly quadrupling the resolution.
This is because they usually assume you are dumb and are not scaling a square ratio, so it uses technuques to make this less apparent,
which results in a picture which on average is better on odd resolutions, but less sharp than it could be if it were 1:4.
It isn't really a huge problem for me coming from 900p, 1080p content on my UHD monitor looks alright.
If you watch cartoons on it though I'd recommend 1440p instead for that 720p scaling, despite it probably still being bicubic scaling.
