Buy a Blinkstick Pro. It can drive LEDs over USB. It supports Linux and has bindings for basically everything. I bought a Blinkstick Flex a while back for the inside of my case and use them to do everything from showing me the weather in the morning to visualizing any audio that's playing to playing ambient animations that look neat reflecting off the parts in my computer.
