Why is Linux mint a separate distro from Ubuntu? Isn't it just Ubuntu LTS with a new DE?
Why is Ubuntu a separate distro from Debian? Isn't it just Debian with unity?
That's the power of the GPL license.

Cinnamon.
Differnt standard tools.
Differnt configurability.
Differnt policy towards proprietary software and codecs.
Different Update/Upgrade system.
Also there's "Linux Min Debian Edition", which is not based on Ubuntu.

It's being maintained by a completely different group and has a lot of differences. It also includes some non-"free" drivers and codecs OOTB and is generally not against proprietary licenses unlike Ubuntu and most other distributions which don't include mp3 codecs by default, for example.
Well I think it used to be a flavor of Ubuntu you'd download that had all the codecs and crap already preinstalled for you and that was the biggest draw. But Ubuntu does a lot of what Linux Mint used to offer before Ubuntu. I think they use some in house updating software that looks cool. It looks way better than any other distro that's for sure.
But what do I know? I just use Debian and barely pay attention to other distros.
