So, like, why doesn't another company attempt to make a open-standard version of the MagSafe connector for use in modern smartphones?
I may not know much about patents, but couldn't someone just attempt to achieve the same effect with a different pin structure?
Why would they want to?
It doesn't really add anything of value. It's just another buzzword product.

Cheaper than developing wireless charging, and less likely to snap like type c, I suppose
I like MagSafe but I'd rather not replace the USB port with a proprietary standard (or an open one that one company uses) especially since Type-C is finally being adopted.

You would need the cooperation of the IEEE or some other standards organisation along with a major manufacturer or 2 to make a push for a new standard like this viable.
