I need a 9 pin COM serial port.
I have a USB to COM adapter that worked on every other good day but now it's fucked.
I see there are 2 cheap types on ebay, one which plugs into a PCI slot, and another which plugs into the motherboard (pictured).
Which would you recommend?
Also does the one that plugs straight into the motherboard kind of make it a USB emulation? I ask because I have USB ports plugged into the same looking ports and I don't want just a fancier version of the shitty USB adapter I have now.
I think either would be fine in Linux, but I am am not sure about the pci on windows if it's over windows 7

The one pictured MUST plug into a serial com port header on the motherboard. Download the pdf for your motherboard to see if it has any anon.

Yeah it has a couple

Just buy a serial bracket if your motherboard has a serial header.

Do you perhaps have a cable with a clone chip? Those are need of an older driver to work. Windows (if you are using that), installs one that only works with genuine chips.

no
serial port header on motherboard is different from usb header on motherboard
