IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

In my department, peope use either macs, or oversized AMD powered hps.

And, when it comes to the whole uni, thinkpads are not that frequent. Specially a 8 year old one.

I needed to get mine from UK because there weren't a single one for sale in my country.

The X260 will be the last model with the current generation chassis which was introduced with the X240.

I am using a T430. I applied new thermal paste myself, runs like new, but I want to know if it is possible to unplug the internal webcam and microphone from the inside?

I never opened the screen bezel as I didn't have any need to, in order to get to the heatsink and CPU.
My question is not whether I can unplug it, but it is whether this would cause any hardware/software issues maybe in the BIOS or OS? Or would it just act like the webcam/mic is not there?

Also, is there enough space for that cable or connector to just dangle there on the inside of the bezel if its disconnected?

Please respond.

meanwhile, you can get a t430 with a 3rd gen i5, place in a 1080p screen, 16gb of ram, an SSD for the OS, and swap out the optical drive for an ultrabay with a HDD for storage

there is no longer a need for desktops, at least for most people.
its a real shame lenovo ruined everything after the T430/X230 series though
>>
>>56611732
It's not about the OS - the BIOS itself thinks the lid is closed, so it will flash the screen off momentarily. Don't know if you can easily replace the sensor.
>>56612058
I've run X230 without the display or any of the accessories (mic, webcam etc.) just fine, probably the same with T430, it just doesn't care. IIRC the connectors are not inside the bezel so you shouldn't need to open that to disconnect the webcam etc.

Which is exactly why I said 'mod'.
Some chinks can wire the screen to the dock port. No reason people can't wire the M2 slot to maybe the 2.5 drive space. Then just insert a 2280 drive there.
Of course no one tested that but it's possible.

Someone already proposed an idea. When someone with real need look into this they'll try.

Holy fuck, why couldn't they fit 3G antenna in WXGA+ X201s? There is a plenty of space in there.

Anyway, any ideas how to fit it in there? Remove one wifi antenna and two middle screw mounts (I know I'll need to remove some bits from the front cover as well)?
>>
>>56612478
Have you ever taken a laptop apart? Roughly 99% of all manufacturers do this. It's cheap, it works and (good for tinkerers) easy to remove and replace if need be.
There is literally nothing wrong with using good ol' tape to keep wires inside the laptop in place.

I kinda am tired of my x220T. It is an AWESOME laptop and I love it very dearly, but it doesn't get through a full day on a charge for me now since I spend all day on campus. I can probably get an OEM six sell and that would probably get it up to 5 or 6 hours, but I think come Christmas it might be time for a new laptop for me.

What are my options? I'd like something without a 16:9 resolution but I know that isn't a thing except on Apples. Was thinking of either a surface tablet to complement my x220T or an x260

First check for a dip switch on the caddy itself, if there isn't one or it doesn't work put electrical tape over the 3rd SATA pin.

>>
>>56613228
I think it has an SD slot. In that case expanding it with a 128GB card may be an acceptable workaround if you don't care much for speed. A UHS class 3 card should be fine.

should I stock up on __20 and __30 model thinkpads?
or should I get ready to switch from thinkpads to using dell latitudes or hp elitebooks?

the newer thinkpads in the 50 and 60 series have amazing hardware and battery life, but lenovo is taking things down a road I don't like. soldered ram, and less functionality by removing keys/buttons
>>
>>56612509
Much cheaper but only if you don't value your time at all
>>
>>56613248
Oh hey that could work out. I usually only store shit like pictures and the likes on my secondary storage. I bet a good SD card would be alright. I would just worry about long term storage I suppose. But 128 gb total is more than enough for a laptop like that since I keep all my busy stuff on an external.

>>56613285
Personally I'm not in the 4:3 camp. More in the 16:10 camp. Goes a long way when we are dealing with sizes like this.

I'd love to give a shot with 3:2 though.
>>
>>56613406
You might want to stock up on spare parts, not necessarily whole computers.

Batteries, RAM, maybe even motherboards.
>>
>>56613406
If you're not needing it for something time critical, you can wait for the thinkpad classic which should be 16:10

>>56613417
3:2 is the most awesome aspect ratio but sadly only (((Google))) offers that
>>
>>56613444
Well the surface pro 3 has that aspect ratio too, but at the cost of really shitty hardware. I wouldn't mind one though.

I hear mixed things on the battery life though.
>>
>>56612808

>>
Will X220 hold up three years from now?
It's already getting dated in my eyes and I can't believe there are still people selling them at $400.
>>
>>56613611
I do think so, but don't expect to be gaming or doing graphically intensive work on it

that isn't necessarily a bad thing though. unless you're a 3d artist or something, what more do you need a computer to do than browse the web, open files, and playback media?

even today, I still find myself impressed with the practicality, functionality, and speed of the thinkpad. It is truly a shame they had to ruin it
>>
>>56613611
Other anon hits it on the head.

If you are in the market for a laptop it's still an okay choice. I got my tablet model for 185. Just had to clean off the lid with some goo b gone, then spent 100 in upgrades.

My only real complaint is the battery is mediocre compared to others but if you aren't doing a lot of things where you don't mind bringing a cord when out for more than 4 or 5 hours then I think it's awesome.

The tablet is kind of a heavy fucker though.

are thinkpads really so rare in usa? at my polytechnic (poland) tons of people use them, im my last lab group i think about 25 out of 30 people had thinkpads, most older models. and we never ever had any lenovo college programs with discounts.
>>
>>56614065
Poland might have a lot more companies that "upgrade" their infrastructure and sell their old thinkpads to used goods retailers or the used goods retailers are closer to more local tech companies.
>>
>>56614065
My guess is that it varies from country to country. Most privately owned business laptops (Thinkpads, Elitebooks, Latitudes) are 2nd hand ones from companies etc. and what brand the companies chose depends on the service(s) offered which, I guess, vary from country to country (also, skills of the salesman).
Eg. here in Denmark I can't remember seeing a company going with Lenovo. Only seen Dell and HP.

Does the x220 have UEFI boot?

If so, you can try formatting the USB volume to FAT32, and extracting the files from the iso into it.

If not, have you tried dd'ing into the USB? Is thee such option in windows?

Hey all.

Looking for a Thinkpad no more than ~4 years old. Want to have both Windows 7 and 10 on it (preferably on two separate SSD, but could partition if I need to). Need it to be able to run that Halo 5 Forge mode for Windows 10. Will post those min and recommended specs in next post. Was thinking a T series so carrying it around Uni wouldn't be a pain but the extra weight of a W wouldn't bother me. Screen size isn't too important. Keyboard doesn't matter much as I have an IBM Model M SSK that I will be using. Would like to spend not much more than $500, but could go up to $700.Thanks fa/g/gots.

Is upgrading to a T430 worth it?
>>
>>56615352
yes, because if you plan on relying totally on the iGPU, the intel hd 4000 was a huge improvement over the intel hd 3000

plus, t430 keyboard actually isn't that bad. It still has a very comfortable feel, and the keys are nice and sturdy. There is no shifting of the body like in the new laptops (x250, x260).

The bad thing about the t430 is the layout of the keyboard, but you get used to it.

Honestly I feel like I've been meme'd by buying a thinkpad.

I got a T420 in near-mint cosmetic condition but I'm not seeing the so called "thinkpad build quality".

The screen flexes about 5mm if you press it when closed and makes creaking sounds.

The lid closed sensor is shitting out and from research isn't easy to replace (thinkpads are easily serviceable r-right?)

There is about 2-3 degrees of wobble in the lid/hinges before the friction kicks in so it wobbles at the slightest movement.

When closed, there is a gap of about 1mm between lid and palmrest, so it constantly wobbles and makes noise.

The lid thumb latch doesn't always push the lid up enough to be able to open it with one hand and in one swift movement.

The battery has about 1-2mm of wobble but somehow still works.

Battery charging light flickers, suggesting it isn't getting a solid connection.

The trackpoint is jittery and inconsistent.

Why did you do this to me, /g/?

Are the newer thinkpads better?
>>
>>56615429
Buy a pre-retina Macbook Pro if you want actual build quality. Newer thinkpads are even worse.
>>
What benefits do I gain by using a docking station?
Will it add more juice to my dedicated graphics card?
>>
>>56615329
Yeah. Just cut off two screw sockets and shifted one wifi antenna to the side.
>>
>>56615402
>yes, because if you plan on relying totally on the iGPU, the intel hd 4000 was a huge improvement over the intel hd 3000
But i said I don't give a shit about the iGPU, I'm using eGPU.

The change of keyboard layout isn't a big deal, I'm mostly looking for some upgrades or new features on the t430 compared to the t420 so i can justify selling my t420, buying a t430 and maxing it. Seems like the screens are somewhat the same, no new features and can't use china batteries which is a huge dealbreaker for me.

I only use mine when plugged to a wall outlet but judging by the 2nd being true I assume it does, it gets really hot not burning your hands hot but hot enough to feel warm around the area on the palmrest over it. The last part is not true for me at all, its a bit glitchy in the sense that I have to unplug the whole card when I finish using something or else the system halts to a crawl if I unplug the device but leave the card on. Other than that there are no system interrupts when in use and I've left my hard drives plugged in for days. I use a Renesas controller based Transcend card.

I bought a w520 with a quadro 1000m dedicated gpu.
I don't give two shits about gaming, I just installed windows 7 and some games to see how the gpu performs.
I installed the optimus drivers from the lenovo website and directx 11.

And it's shit. I can barely play Mafia II with more than 15 fps on a 1600x800 resolution.
They say here that they had 25 avg fps with 1080p res http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-1000M.47317.0.html
I tried the unigine benchmark with the same settings as on that website and I got 4 fps at most (they got 10.1 avg)
This fucker claims he can play GTA 5 with the same gpu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdEEM_RCWaM

I don't get it. Is the gpu somehow faulty?

I can see that, the temperatures are amazing (37 to 43 degrees on all cores and iGPU) exceot on one core. Bending that shit probably made sure that the heatsink wasn't properly seated on top of the CPU.

At medium. When I run them at max using TPFancontrol I get a few degrees lower temps, but the GPU is always at least 65C

You plug your monitor, ethernet, peripherals and shit to the dock and then you put the thinkpad on the dock.

Nah, X201s with WXGA+ screens never had WWAN. There isn't enough space because someone decided to put screws so that you couldn't mount antennas (actually if they were just slightly shifted to the sides it would be fine). It however has a SIM slot since WXGA models did have WWAN so it's only matter of mounting a card and antennas. The card is Gobi 2000.

I'm not sure anything else you listed is an actual problem. The battery light only blinks when you switch to AC, it doesn't flicker ever.
>>
>>56617762
>Trackpoint sucks unless you have some reason that you can't use the trackpad.
Actually if you have a genuine keyboard/trackpoint, the trackpoint is awesome. If you have a plastic trackpoint rather than a rubber one I could understand why you don't like it.

Most of the time I have the trackpad disabled. It's worthless. I love the trackpoint because I know I can keep my hands on the keyboard all the time and still have access to the mouse.

It's a superior experience to anything else.
>>
>>56617762
I always used the trackpad on other laptops and I was proficient with it.

It only took me one day of using my x230 to disable the fucking trackpad on the BIOS.

It doesn't even compare. And the trackpad itself, when compared with trackpads in other laptops is not bad at all.

Would be for linux

Can it play back youtube at 720p no problem?
Can it play back youtube 720p60?
Can it decode 720p Hi10p anime?
Can it playback 1080p video files?
Can it stream twitch.tv (in html or java)?

How well does a gba emulator run?
How well does an n64 emulator run, if at all?
With an SSD, do word and excel documents open up well or is it quite slow?
How long does the battery last?
How hot does it get?
How does the build compare with an X200/X201 and the X220/X230
How does the keyboard compare with the X200/X201 and X220/X230
How is the screen?
Any significant differences between normal and tablet versions (such as glue in screen, ghosting, higher res on tablets being better, viewing angles, build quality)?

Wanting to get an X60/X60t/X61/X61t, not sure which one or if it even matters, and I'm wondering what they can do

Thanks

Basically its a entry-level thinkpad but it still holds up pretty good. Dont expect the same durability or upgradeability or enterprise solutions. To sum it up it looks and feels like a "lighter" / consumer / "basic" version Thinkpad with some cheaper and lighter materials, but still manages to feel well built.

I would recommend you to find somewhere with both L and T series so you can hands-on compare them before purchase.

look, anything you buy used is going to have cosmetic blemishes and scratches, but they will be MINOR.

this isn't even about aesthetic appeal. just stop to consider this for a moment: if this person handles their possessions like this, would you want to own something they used? would you want to know how many times they came straight onto the keyboard, rather than directing their blasts towards a tissue or something?

I am starting my senior year of high school right now and I am looking for a solid laptop I can take to college with me. my starting budget 1000 and I can go to anything around 1500. I am applying as a Computer Science major with an alt major of mechanical engineering. If anyone has any advice for what kind of laptops are good for college please lmk. Also if you think I should wait for the next generation of Intel chips lmk as well because if I needed to wait I could go without a laptop for a while, or just buy a cheap one to last me til the new generations! I would also like this laptop to last me through all 4 years of college so I do not mind spending a little more money if I need to. I would prefer a 15 in screen,
>>
>>56620688
Get a Thinkpad G40. Almost impossible to find something as solid.
>>
>>56620586
i would get the x220

but not that t420, it is kind of beat too. i mean its not in horrible condition, but instead of dropping the money on a new sticker, case parts, etc, just drop $140 to $175 on one in a decent condition. I know cash can be tough at times man, but surely you have a job, right?

its never good to cheap out on something that you will be using daily. I spent $200 on my t430 that came to me in pristine condition from a refurber, the only work it needed was a new SSD, but even then it didn't "need" a new one, as it had a 2013 ssd with 128gbs that worked just fine.
>>
>>56620688
>>56620723
while a g40 is truly solid, you don't want to be using a pentium again man

get a T400

I've posted same thing ITT before, but since you're giving away such advice, I might as well ask.

I'm currently looking as a non-daily thinkpad (but still very operational). Budget max is at around $160 (if I need some upgrades, I'll either include them in this price or hold on and use whatever I have for a bit and then upgrade it). I could save up a bit more, but I don't really see a reason to; I'm probably not going to use it for much else besides some work and basic desktop stuff whenever I'm away from my desktop. I've never owned a thinkpad before, but I wanted one for some time. Probably going to load up

Also, that x220 is using stock photos, so there's no way to know if it's better.

Poverty tier lenovo lover here Trying to keep my old T61 going for as long as possilbe (for I cannot afford anything else) but I got keyboard (FRU: 42T3209) problems.

The "T" key has gone crap on me, only working under a heavy, direct press to the center of the key. I've canned air the hell out of it, but it looks like the loss of sensitivity is in the keyboard cup itself.

Anything I can do about that (can the cups be replaced indivually?) and if not are the cheap used keyboards on eBay legit, or are there counterfeits running around?

Love the feel don't want to give it up. Don't want to waste money either.

ohshitniggerwhatareyoudoing.exe

I have a $600+ desktop, but after I got my t430 I've started using it exclusively

I only use the desktop for homework, and even then sometimes I do it from my laptop. Switching to a thinkpad was the best decision i've ever made (regarding computing of course), not even trolling.
All the power, functionality of a desktop packed into one package, its fucking amazing

Hm, alright. My desktop is around $600, but I've heard about the magical powers of the Thinkpad.
Anyway, I still need help with picking a deal. I'm just somewhat lost in all of the deals to really understand what exactly I should look for right now with my circumstances (although I don't think I can screw up that much with a thinkpad)
>>
>>56621088
you'll want something from the __20 or __30 series, as they are the best made before lenovo fucked up the thinkpad design

If a t430 or t530, look to spend anywhere from $180 to $220

if t420 t520, anywhere from $140 to $180 at most

look, there isn't a really a process or anything, just look around, make sure you aren't getting jewed. i would recommend buying from a refurber though, saves you the trouble of having to put in the upgrades yourself and wait for it.

i've found that smaller refurbers put in more time into their models they sell much more so than bigger guys. the seller with a few laptops for sale is likely to give you better service than the guy with 300+ items for sale
>>
>>56621192

>>56621337
graphite can carry electricity.
If you apply graphite to the cup contact, it will make a better electrical connection.

The problem is 99% an electrical connection problem, caused by use.

This solution is not eternal, but you can do it once every 6 months or so and it will be fine.
>>
>>56621001
>Switching to a thinkpad was the best decision i've ever made
Same here. Sold my desktop, upgraded my T420 to a quad core and kept the GPU + Monitor for an eGPU setup. Add the docking station and you got a pretty nice desktop-laptop hybrid.
>>
>>56621365
Ok but I'm a bit wary about getting under the cup to begin with, it doesn't look like it was intended to be serviceable, I can get that back on?
>>
>>56621388
I don't know, I never serviced a thinkpad keyboard.

What I said works with every membrane keyboard though.
>>
>>56621435
The old lenovo keyboards are Scissor-switch. You can't access the membrane directly without removing the overlying dome first. I can't find any documentation that says that people ever remove the domes, so I'm wary that if I take it off it won't be going back on.

Just as thinkpads are great and cheap because they're business surplus, so too are rack servers

You can find a bid right now ending in a few hours for a Poweredge with two Xeon E5520s

CPUs get sold off as surplus a lot too so every so often a specific Xeon will be ridiculously cheap (Facebook recently offloaded tons of 8-core E5-2670's for example and they're going for $70)

There's never been a better time to do home servers the right way

ADATA SP550 for literally the cheapest but not fastest SSD.
>>
>>56622747
I'd buy an msata SSD for a T420 so you can have 2 extra drives + the SSD for a total of three drives on your memepad.

Yes it's limited to SATA2 but you won't notice the difference between sata2 and sata3 in daily usage anyway.

>>

I imagine running Xeons would be pretty expensive
How easy is it to rent out server space?
>>
>>56622858
Start with basic shit and work your way up.

First off you want file sharing, so learn how to Samba
Next since it's a media server, learn about media streaming, such as mpd

Another thing a lot of people use instead of linux is Plex, which is android-based but is basically an OS intended for media streaming servers
>>
>>56622984
>Also, how much power would those things draw?
Not much more than a desktop really. Probably less desu. Most of the power supplies in the servers at work are only 300W ones. I bet it'll be a lot less than your average gaymen machine.

Server power draw is mostly a concern because people will be running dozens or hundreds of server racks and shit. For just one it's no biggie.

>How easy is it to rent out server space?
Pretty easy but that's more the thing to do if you want to host webservers with minimal money. You wouldn't want that for a for a home media server.

This could be a /g/ thread of its own.

FreeNAS and PLEX are the biggest things a lot of people use. FreeNAS is the OS and handles shared files and drives, and PLEX does the media streaming to basically any OS including Android phones and shit
