Still not a fan of Dell, every time I see laptops with very similar hardware the Dell's are 10-20% cheaper.

That software in those dells are built right into the motherboard, its like the Compaq of 2016

Let me guess, 650-700$
>>

For those specs, probably a lot more than that. I'm guessing 1200$.

What would be an alternative to this? I was actually considering getting this for college and for light gaming. Is the 960m THAT bad? I wouldn't be getting 4k because I can't stand the glare on touch screen laptops.

Alternatively, I was looking at the XPS 13. For $1049 I can get the QHD, touch (ew), 200+gb PCLe SSD, 8gb ram and integrated GPU. Can't upgrade ram or add a dedicated GPU.

Are there better options? I need portable, decent batter life, light gaming, and doesnt look like a brick.

Got this laptop for mom a couple weeks ago - except it was the 256GB SSD, 1080p display, and 8GB RAM. Same i7 CPU and 960m GPU.

She'll be using it for Office / Adobe CC and some other basic productivity apps.

By the way, it does have a backlit keyboard.

$705.34 shipped. Did I do good, /g/?

The Dell XPS 15 and 13 have massive hardware, driver and quality control problems. Look around at current owners of he Dell XPS 15 9550 and see the kind of problems I am talking about.

Also new GPUs are coming out soon the 1050 and 1060s.

Dells xps and gaming alienware (off topic, but gaming laptops are retarded) last a long time. Their budget stiff is a bit hit or miss. My inspiron has been running great for the past 6 years, others aren't so lucky and last only half as long.

Essentially, you get what you pay for, but their premium and gaming lines are really fucking good.

Business Dells are another beast entirely. They're even better.
>>
>>56605838
It's a touchscreen, that's why it's glossy.

>>56596573
I got the Precision version of that a couple weeks ago. Great device so far - basically identical specs except I have a Quadro GPU and TPM, which is handy for Bitlocker.

I recommend reducing the scaling from 250% to 200% though. At 200% you have a functional desktop real-estate equivalent to 1920x1080. 250% is just too restrictive and too small, you don't need the UI elements scaled that high.
>>
>>56597094
>Let me guess, 650-700$
Are you retarded? The used price of that laptop with those specs is twice that amount. Brand new it's over 2 grand.
>>
>>56599697
Wow. Who'd have guessed it wasn't designed for gaming.

Fucking idiot.
>>
>>56599572
That's actually every Skylake chip right now. Fucking Intel fucked everyone up. This is all AMDs fault for sucking so bad that a CPU with shitty drivers is still the best choice
>>
>>56599772
The touchscreen doesn't change anything. It's the fact that the only way to get the 4K screen is to have it combined with the touchscreen is what increases the battery draw.
>>
>>56596573
>i7, 16GiB, a fucking discrete graphics card and 4K on a 15 inch screen

>>56596573
Shit, high performance laptops are a waste of money.
i5 with 8GB RAM and an SSD. Then buy a real computer.
What do you even want with 4k on a screen that small?
It would have to be scaled up so you can read it, completely removing the purpose of 4k.
Also you have an IPS display that your going to smear your fat fingers over.
Fuck these piss me off.

I dont want to make a new thread for this so Ill hijack yours OP.

Thinking about buying pic related, it's an Asus Transformer T100HA. I want it as a everyday carry to college so I can do homework in it, read documents, and fuck around when I have nothing else to do. Is it a good purchase for 300? Does anyone here have one?

My actual laptop is a 17 inch beast that weights a ton and is simply uncomfortable to use in class so I need a tablet or something. My phone was supposed to fulfill that function but the battery of the Nexus 6 doesn't last for shit.
>>
>>56606592
>T100HA
I'm a computer technician and we have had a few problems with the charge ports.
The only issue I have with these is they're not very viable to repair.
>>
>>56606592
I'd look for a 13". In practical terms it's just as portable, but the extra room makes it something you won't hate to do work on.

I used a 10" laptop for the first couple years of university and it got frustrating.
>>
>>56606681
I wont be doing most of the work here though, this is just to get shit done at the last minute, or simple assignments. Anything more complicated than a 3 page paper will be done on my main laptop.
>>
>>56605918
It's not just because it has a touchscreen. Every high-dpi screen is glossy. The grain distorts the color, why do you think Apple uses it on retina displays? Everyone knows it's worse for reflection, so it had to be good for something else.
>>
>>56606737
Still, it's nice to be able to hunker down in a cafe on campus and get shit done. Especially if you end up with a course schedule with several-hour breaks. And like I said, it's just as easy to take a 13 with you as it is anything else, so it seems like a "might as well" proposition. Unless you have a purse or something.

Saying this as someone who brought a laptop to school every day for more or less 5 years. I wish I'd bought the 13 from the get-go.

>>56597277
10 hours is like the bare minimum a laptop should get these days. impressive given the specs but I'm sure there are comparable laptops with better battery life.
>>
the GL 552GW is not worth it, for that money You can get a labtob with a XEON processor, that being said, its worth about 1000$ here in USA.

The Transformer is not that hard to fix, the screen is Very replaceable, But they are very flimsy.

Soldering stations are really cheap nowadays 852D 853D is 50-80 bucks, I remember just a few years ago Weller stations where 1500 and up.

as for the Touchscreen, Whats the point?

Go to a Local best buy and check out the touchscreen on that, its Amazing.

2nd of all, You are buying Yesterdays Technology, 960 is Previous generation, Why the Hell would You pay a Premium? You have to much money or something?

last point, Nvidia is uncreative, Its just a whole lot of really long pipelines, for god sake they Run hot and very inefficient, thus they make almost no sense in a Laptop.

My 8800FX APU that runs on 15 or something Watts plays No mans sky on Medium settings and my FPS never falls below 29, the 960 eats up about 75 watts, Picture a 75 watt lightbulb on your lap, It makes no sense to call it a Laptop, that's atleast 100 watts of heat!

1000-1500$ for a Laptop from Last year?

Buy it and then ask us how did You do.

They're good laptops. In fact, they're the best in the premium business category. Check out notebookcheck.net . God tier build quality but at the same time relatively thin and light. Support for these is also very good. They usually come with a 3year warranty and 24h on-site support (Germany). They're not meant for gaming/gpu-intensive work, so a GPU would only shorten the battery life. Also, quality comes at a price.

Awesome specs...but that CPU and the screen RES is going to drain your battery. Enjoy all 18 minutes of uptime before you need to charge it again.

Can you use an eGPU with the XPS 13/15? I remember reading somewhere that not all Thunderbolt 3 ports actually support the eGPU standard.

Ok I did some research, but I'm not an expert so I could be partly wrong, or Dell could have updated their BIOS so this no longer applies. Not all Thunderbolt 3 laptops support eGPUs, the laptop has to support graphics switching in the BIOS. The XPS 15 supports that because it already has a dGPU + integrated graphics, so people have had much more luck with eGPUs on the XPS 15. However, the XPS 13 has problems with an eGPU because it doesn't support graphics switching. At least that's what I've gathered from a few minutes of googling.
