I think that no matter what condition the actual laptop is in, no matter how well it works, no matter what important things were on it, you would just want it out of your house. Gone.

A 7th generaton iPod nano full of essential mixes that I slap onto a magnetic stand that clips onto the car air conditioning vent and hooked up through auxiliary. If you hate driving, this may change the mood completely. It's only 16GB but transcoding BBC live player's raw streams into 128kbps AAC, it sounds great and can fit a pretty big catalog.

I vote iPod too, but I think 300 songs is plenty. I clip it so my shirt sleeve and route the wire up the back of my shirt when I ride my bike. It has a voice control option that allows you to navigate playlists so I keep one for music and one for podcasts. Then after 17 hours of battery life I put it in the usb port and it's charged in 4 hours. I delete the old podcasts and toss on a new one. Then if I feel like it I'll swap out music playlists too.
