Now what.

Step 1: Become literate.

Step 2: Install it again, and choose a graphical environment this time, faglord.
>>
>>56574932
install gentoo
>>
>>56574932

It'd probably be faster to just reinstall the damn thing. Unless you're using Debian Stable, in which case the only acceptable configuration is a minimal install. That shit's for servers.
>>
>>56574932
sudo apt-get install $DESKTOP_ENVIRONMENT
boot into non-terminal system
>>
>>56574932
just install the full xorg package, from the terminal. the command should be something like:
sudo apt-get install xorg

then you just need to install a window manager or desktop environment, whatever you like.
nowadays desktop environments are pretty easy to set up.
>>
sudo zypper install pattern-gnome-desktop

you are welcome.
>>
>>56574971
This is literally what the creator of Debian did for the same exact reason you think OP should

Am I doing Linux right?

I been fucking around with gentoo lately trying to learn Linux a little better.

If you're installing gentoo from debian what exactly are you installing? Just a different package manager and corresponding packages?

If when you're at the point that you understand Linux well enough to use the command line well and setup your own shit then, at that point, what is the difference between distros? Different packages/software collections? That's it?

So distributions=skins for the same OS?
>>
>>56577298
all the distros have their own spin on file organization, what is baked into the distro, what's enabled by default, etc
>>
>>56575997
Lol what
>>
>>56574932
reinstall the non-minimal version with a DE
>>
>>56577311
Seriously I been trying to understand Linux for a long time, I have no preference with OS anymore, and debian simply seems like the easiest thing to use out of all the distros. I don't understand why people keep saying that its for servers... Simply because it comes without X preinstalled?? I wish there was a guide for Linux for people coming from the msdos/windows way of thinking and understanding the operating system, it is not easy/simple to let go of your assumptions and expectations for behavior of the command line when you throw out the window any distinctions between files and executables.
>>
>>56575118
lol
>>
>>56574932
just do everything from the terminal, you don't need a graphical environment.

recommended apt-get:
lynx - web browser
mutt - mail
feh - image viewer
vim - text editor
bc - calculator
irssi - irc client
moc - music player
noice - file browser
ansichan - 4chan
mps - youtube

It's all about how much work you need to put in to get it to where you want.

It's like those RPGs with a giant skill map and your starting role determines where you get to start putting skill points in. Sure, you can take an Ubuntu and strip it into a lean embedded OS, but it's a hell of a lot less work to start with an embedded distro.
>>
>>56578653
>Sure, you can take an Ubuntu and strip it into a lean embedded OS
Why strip a desktop Ubuntu when you can just bootstrap it like Arch?

That doesn't sound like gentoo...
