two mSATA SSDs in RAID 1 hooked to my router via USB as a NAS to backup "not super-duper important but would be a pita to lose" data.

tell me why this is a bad idea. my nerd friend said I should get a "WD my cloud" instead but he is knee-jerk dismissive and couldn't tell me exactly why it's a bad idea. the way I see it is SSDs are more reliable and my router has a function for NAS over USB so it would be super easy to install.

raid != backup

if something deletes the files, theyre gone from both media
>>
>>56567029
ps: unless this thing is also a redundant copy already, in that case it's ideal

They're not
>>
>>56567103
why not? no moving parts and it takes a ridiculous amount of writing to wear them out.

>>56567029
it would be copies #2 and 3# and I'd run it with a backup manager.

They're physically more reliable but they fail more often than harddrives. Depends on the quality of course.
>>
Why the hell would you sink all that dosh into a SSD and then use it though USB? Just get normal harddrives.

> the way I see it is SSDs are more reliable
1. The difference is not that significant
2. It doesnt matter. Even if both of them die at the same time you still have the real copy. If you need more reliability than that then you'll have to get a third, off-site backup anyways.

because I could power the SSDs via USB, but not HDs. supplying power to where I'd put the storage would be a pita plus another point to fail. also I hate HDDs and can afford SSDs.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
