Hi /g/ I am moving to a new apartment, I'm looking to buy a ~55 inch TV. In your guys' opinion should I spend the money for a 4k or just stick with the 1080p?

You should definetly buy a 4k curved tv with hdr.
Just get a cheap 1080p.

If you can afford it, 4K is excellent.

I was thinking to, but I heard bad things about viewing angles and that the technology is still in its infancy. I also heard they were bad for gaming (although I'm buying one mainly for movies and tv)
Are there any brands you would recommend?

Once upon a time, the only affordable 4K PC screen were TN. This is not longer the case, and you are not buying a PC screen anyway.
I would suggest you go to the electronics store and check out 1080p vs 4K TVs in person. I found that the clarity of 4K was very impressive!

Sorry mate, no clue.
I did a job where I had to basically replace high end tvs for people for awhile and having to look at TVs all day I came to conclusion that 4k is great, I bought a Vizio P50-C1 and it's one of the best TVs I've ever seen.
Right now I would just get standard 1080. Not much decent 4k content, and by the time there is the 4k tvs will have come down in price even more and be better quality.
