>get into online gaming a few months later with pirated copies of Turok 2 and South Park the Game, along with Quake 2
>spend a ton of time browsing web 1.0 sites, webrings, abandonware sites, fansites etc

it was a simpler time, a better time

I miss chatrooms, modern IRC just isn't the same
online gaming sure as fuck isn't the same either

Cant remember exactly but now that you mention it, my first times using the internet i remember that it felt like an amazing gift to me. I could use it 1h a week at the library as a kid, mainly looking up websites I saw around that seemed interesting like a cartoons official website or silly games.

mid 2000s. I looked up a lego forum and made a post that was literally nothing but a long long string of smileys

Thats the first time I REMEMBER, anyway.

>1994

>Try some sites from listings in Internet magazine
>Eventually manage to get onto an Amiga FTP site and download AMosaic
>Try some websites
>Everything is excruciatingly slow because using a 2400bps modem
>AMosaic crashes all the time

And that's the first time I used the internet. About a year later we got a 28.8k modem, I found some newsgroups, someone made some decent Amiga browsers, and I figured out where to get porn.
>>
Not my first, but an early memory that somewhat lead me to this horrid website today.

>Curious, dunno what XXX Games could possibly be, sounded cool though
>Click the link
>It loads
>Big picture of Goku fucking Sailormoon
>I get a boner
>Dunno what to think, so I bookmark the picture for later
>Invite some school friends over and show them
>Have strange dreams about that picture for a while after

I remember one of my friends finding the picture hilarious at the time, saying, and I quote "Haha, it looks like she's eating it!". My parents never found out, and they probably should have monitored my internet usage as a kid.

>>

That's my earliest memory of the internet, I must have been about 7-8ish. I literally only remember the librarian showing us that the URL can't have spaces in - I remember nothing else from that day. I wish I knew what site we were trying to get on so I could look at it today.

Before we got a proper computer we had one of those shitty computer-phone things which could access the web. I used to look up yu-gi-oh cards on it all the time.

I also remember the first time I saw porn, I was like 10 and waited until my mum and sister went out so I could go on the family computer in the kitchen. I think I just searched for "sex" and somehow ended up on looking at some bondage pics of women in black latex suits lmao. I came in literally seconds.

Good times.

No shit. There's just no where else to go on the net. Reddit is an absolute hellhole that will go the way of Digg and Myspace. This is the only place with a large userbase and little moderation.

We're fortunate the userbase shows some restraint on /g/. Some of the other boards are a mess due to lack of moderation.

Site shortly there after closes down.

Find similar site, not as good, but not dead.

Forget about both.

Year or two later, look for second site for anime porn, find first site is back up.

I had no idea what 4chan was, but apparently I was already an old fag. Missed out on all the CrAcky-chan and Snacks stuff. Was here when people used to spam Patrick Duffy on /gif/ and Mexi-Moot.

First time on the internet was the middle school shop teacher(for some reason) was teaching us about the internet in 93-94? Had a Mac with telnet, Gopher, and Mosaic.

lol compstomps were so fun
hilarious how people did compstomps thinking it helped their win record but battle.net wouldn't count UMS or any game with a computer player, they'd sit there for hours playing compstomps still at 0-0-0

>unally one random person
>computer player dies
>awkward silence
>game isn't over
>"OMG THIS IS SOOOO CREEPY WHY ISN'T THE GAME ENDING GUYS?"
>everyone is so bad that they somehow can't tell that your giant built up base between everyone else's one CC and 4 peons is the guy
>just yell out "OH MY GOD RED (whoever) UNALLIED ME!"
>everyone unallies red and kills him
>repeat same shit for 2 more players and they still can't figure it out
>kill everyone else easily with built up base
>losers spout "noooo muh record" not knowing that this won't be counted as a loss or win no matter what
>join next game with the 5 left who made another compstomp
>they know you by name from last game but still don't ban you
>do same shit
one of the most fun games with bw I had was this on fastestmap and someone had a hack to tell who had unallied someone (me) but I still destroyed them all because they just sent all their 4 peons at once to like two sunkens I built and had no money left
>>
>>56551199
Nah it counted, but it had to be Melee, couldn't be "Top vs Bottom (or whatever it was called?)" or "Use map settings". That's why backstabbing was so common, you couldn't get wins on any other mode that would allow fixed allies.

I had 70 wins just from compstomps good lord how much of my life did I waste being a fag.

4chan and other imageboards are the only place you can have a semi-intelligent conversation.

Despite having internet since the early 2000's, I never really did much on it until ~2010 when I joined a forum. Unlike most forums, there wasn't any circlejerking and you could actually speak your mind. There was no moderation. From what I could tell, the Admin had given up on it years before I joined, so you could do whatever you wanted.
It was a nice community of about several dozen regular users. One user eventually gained control of the sever and modified the forums, adding pictures and renaming them after the more prominent users including myself. For whatever reason, the Admin started caring again and instead of restoring the system, he deleted the forums.

That was the first and only place I knew people online that I could casually talk to.
I still keep in limited contact with one user after the three others stopped replying.

The others that are still online are either using a much larger SJW forum they use as a replacement or facebook.

On one hand, I'm glad the cringe worthy comments I made during my teen years are forever washed away from record, but I'm also disappointed it ended because of how much fun it was.

I vaguely remember trying to access nickelodeon.com through a DOS browser on an amber-screened Atari sometime in the early 90s as a young'un. I don't remember. My dad got a PC to play Quake. My dad is a rough old school conservative veteran, and he would never touch a video game these days, so I guess he was different then. He showed me Quake and I was awestruck. He let me play it and fuck I was so scared. I remember in the first level there was this bridge with enemies on the other side; I knew what would happen if I crossed it so I never did. I wound up fuckin around on the computer playing games and such. Probably first used the internet to look up cheats.

IDK, maybe c. Y2K?
I know I was using COMPUTERS since I was only a year and a half old (toddler games, my uncle had some things. I tormented Elmo and laughed at his anxiety when leaving him in the dark)

But, I think my first real use of the INTERNET was probably something like Postopia.com when I was like 6... on a Win 95 with like 16 MB RAM. (got it updated to 32 MB at some point, though)
The fucking hard drive was like... 1.4 GB?

Anyway, I've had an Internet addiction since I was in 1st grade. It has been many months since I last was off the Internet for more than a day or 2 (only b/c my briefcase is too big to unpack for a night at a hotel when travelling - fucking like playing Tetris with a drunken Best Buy. I was about.... seven and kept seeing the cartoon network site being advertised on my TV. I kept looking at the ads and asked my brother to get me on it. When he told me no, I whined tony then late 50's dad and he let me on it. I got bored in like a minute because the dial up was soo slow.

flash forward to now, I want to shoot myself everytime my internet shits the bed and tries blaming it on me then laughs and says "no, it was me.. poop is funny."

Well, 4chan is one of the few old places that look comfy. I come jere for quick answers and shitposting (wiping as we speak).Read up on Hossein Derakhshan . He hets it.

Internet used to be people adding content and sharing knowledge. Now its corporations telling you what you need to know.
>>
I used computers since I was very young, probably like 3 or 4. I used my parents windows 95 IBM for a while, mostly to play games. I had this one kids learning construction game that was the tits and it had its own unique peripheral

Anyway I think the first internet experience I had was at my apartment back in 2000 where I used dial up to look up how to beat the first level in super Mario bros 3.

Tbh I really didn't use the internet a lot until like 2005 and after because that's when we got high speed internet I was way too impatient for dial up

Holy fuck, yes, that was exactly the same computer we had. The speakers on the side and that shitty mouse, can't forget it.

It was 75Mhz, and I was so jealous of my friend when a year later he got the 90Mhz one.

It came with the Megarace game, played the shit out of that one, and a bunch of other boring educational games like Dino park, one about the human body, etc.

Good memories, man.

worldsex.com

I am massively impressed that it's still around.

Back in my day it used to be a black site with just links. Thats it.

Occasionally there would be a 1~3 MB video in horrendous quality lasting 30 seconds.

For the non porn part I used Yahooo Mesenger and ICQ with my friends.

Tried to play online games ping was shit. Didn't try it until Ragnarok Online at that point I got a 64K cable modem. It wasn't much faster but it had 50 ping and it was 100% stable. So torrents and downloading became a thing.

Used to download MP3 and anime with WinMX...

Anime was 30 MB of 25 minute episode in 320×240 in .rm format...

I still have one. I makes my eyes bleed. But I guess CRTs had to have had better scaling or something...

This was one of my first animes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZNsRU1TYOA

The quality was about twice as bad as this youtube video...

I found this song to be fantastic... boy it aged horribly...

My desktop probably looked like this... I wish I had screenshots of my older desktops. I'm so sad that part of my childhood is lost forever...

>Getting lost on the net was such a wonderful experience.
This.

I find myself searching for this feeling, but google is too good now for it to happen easily.
If there was a way to use 2003-era google I would imagine it would be way easier.

Normies certainly ruined the internet.
I can't wait for an underground internet 2.0 that makes the internet great again.
>>
>>56558966

I started with Ranma and Sailormoon midi. I belive my Soundblaster 16 was awesome for midi playing. I listed to a lot of midis...

Later on I found winamp in 1999 and the mp3. But I remember ogg and other formats too were used a lot.... real media was really popular back then .ra and .rm espeically with weebs. At least on WinMX..

>>56562053
What a video FANTASTIC. The nostalgia is real.
>>
So what p2p programs did you guys use the most?

I found myself using WinMX from 2000 well into 2005 before torrent sites beat it with content.

I loved that in WinMX you could what with the people. I often found myself chating with someone over weeb music...

Doesn't it use the internet's infrastructure?

The way that I see it, internet 2.0 is going to have to be satellite internet.
It would have a decent barrier to entry because of the hardware to connect, and can't be controlled.
