How is the GPL still a thing?

Until Linux abandons the GPL license, it will never truly be free. Linus has echoed this.

GPL: You have to freely SHARE what's yours
BSD: You don't have to do anything

Spot the cuck

Good luck getting custom roms for your phone when goohle ditches linux
>>

Linus has explicitly said he likes the GPL and has no regrets in choosing it.

I don't think it could even be changed now without getting 1000s of contributors to agree with it.
>>

>Until Linux abandons the GPL license, it will never truly be free. Linus has echoed this.
I actually agree. Stallman's fanbase is a cult.

There's nothing worse than when people post out-of-context Linus quotes.

Check out how he feels about the shitshow with GPL3 if you don't think he's just playing politics with these Jew cunts.

Linus hasn't changed his opinion of the GPL2 after the GPL3. Making Linux GPL2 is still the best thing he ever did.

I'd rather stick to GPL. Nice try. BSD meme will stay dead FOREVER because of their cuck license fetish
>>
>>56543936
What the fuck is this image?

Is this how you idiots argue against things? I'd rather see a long, well-argued argument rather than dumb memetics.
>>
>>56543936
Both BSD and GPL are great licenses, but BSD is pretty much impossible to make profit from, so I can see why a lot of devs prefer to GPL their software over using the BSD license. BSD is the backbone of a lot of great software.

Both the BSD and the MIT license are pretty much one and the same with very minor differences.
>>

Especially when everybody uses MIT or Apache and BSD is way behind everything.

Of course the original developer is cucked and asks for more.

I am thinking about moving to PC-BSD on my memepad from Debian 8.4

Shall I pull the trigger on it, /g/?
>>
>>56546509
BSD is already too mainstream, or at least will be very soon.
Skip BSD and advance to the next level instead.
>>
>>56546525
Which would be ... ? What exactly?

>>56546534
Haiku or Plan 9
However the latter is also already dangerously mainstream.

So, install Haiku.
>>

TempleOS. Memes aside yes, PC BSD is wonderful
>>

Not sure if I wanna use something that so unknown as those. In a 200Km range I'd probably be the only user with this OS.

Is there a license like the following?

>Do whatever you want with this code, use it in proprietary, change it, sell it, whatever.
>You only have to provide a copy of source code if the code was modified and said source code only needs to be for the code covered by this license

LGPL is kind of like that but too complicated for what I want.
>>
>>56546534
Longene or ReactOS.
>>
>>56546534
PonyOS
>>
>>56546598
I think there is WTFPL for that

>do whatever the fuck you want with it I do not care
>>

That ignores the second point
>>
>>56544035
You've got it all wrong. BSD is the cuck licence par excellence, GPL is more like swinging.
>GPL: Sure you can use what's mine, but in return you have to share what's yours as well
>BSD: Sure you can use what's mine. Can I have a go at yours in return? ... no? Hehe... proprietary you say... that's ok, no pressure.... I'll just sit here and watch, I hope you make her happy..
>>
>>56547592
They're both shit, really. Free software is a dumb meme.
>>
>>56545596
>Check out how he feels about the shitshow with GPL3 if you don't think he's just playing politics with these Jew cunts.
He thinks it's fine apart from the tivoization clause, he acknowledges that tivoization harms the user, but in some cases it is required. A good example would be credit cards, allowing the user to change the software they run on their credit card would be ridiculous
>>
>>56546598
LGPL sounds like what you want, >too complicated
legalese is complicated, that's just how it is.
>>
>>56545612

>>56544035
>you have to SHARE
No you don't, unless you are distributing to other users. In that case, it's only fair to afford them the same freedoms you were afforded.

The GPL is only inconvenient for those who wish to take freedom away from others. I don't think such people deserve respect, as they literally want to prevent you from having freedom.
>>
>>56548510
>implying Marxism is bad

>>
>>56547974
There is no software running in your credit card so no, this is retarded.
>>
Is there a license that allows you to share and use non-commercial but you have to credit the original creator, and disallows commercial use unless they pay royalties because fuck people making money from my shit without paying up?
>>
>>56543936
>software communism

>>

Just use AGPLv3 and sell non-free licenses.
>>
>>56543936
I don't think Linux could succeed in a world where it was not under the GPL. Reason: Hardware drivers. Linux requires hardware drives to function. Hardware companies are notoriously defensive about their code, especially driver code.

Having the Linux be GPL is the only thing that makes companies actually submit their linux drivers to the mainline kernel instead of keeping it for themselves.

If you disagree, go try using a wireless card with BSD.
>>
>>56548739
????
GPL forces you to show everyone your sourcecode, BSD doesn't.
BSD is basically do whatever you want, as long as you mention somewhere that you used my stuff.
>>
>>56550160
>????
If GPL didn't force you to show everyone your source code, companies would never publish drivers.
>>

Some people are willing to make sacrifices to uphold a certain message or to accomplish their dream. OpenBSD is practically run on a charity, Theo De Raadt is a programmer who works from home and he'd be broke if it weren't for the donations he keeps receiving from people caring about OpenBSD.

Not everything is about money, if you put money on a pedestal then you're going to live a very sad life.
