Majority of ads are just shit you have no interest in
A small number of ads are one of these 2:
ads you are interested in
ads that are malware installers, nagware, spam or flooders.

The majority of malware ads get removed even from scummy sites pretty quickly.

As a precaution, just adblock and only whitelist sites you know 100% are fine, if you don't mind ads.
If you are paranoid, block JS-requiring ads just by blocking any use of iframes since basically that is the only thing that uses them now.
That will catch basically any malware ads, besides a small number of them.
NoScript will kill the rest.

The only other major attack vector is the website itself.
More often than not, websites themselves are what infect you because some shit cunt copied some stackoverflow code on to his site to make an epic image gallery, only for it to have a massive exploit allowing full access to server.
That's also what NoScript is for.
NoScript basically makes adblocking redundant,. unless you suffer the paranoia, in which case just block any 3rd party sites entirely.

yes anon, there are chrome and other browser vulnerabilities that come from the javascript that is executed in your browser when you visit a page.

Even if you trust a websites, they can't control what code the ads put on you system.

IMO use an adblocker, don't use flash, don't use java in the browser, and you should be somewhat safe.

I mean, if i'm running forty privacy addons my firefox will probably be just as slow in the end, but I'd rather piss away that speed away on the privacy addons than ads.
I cant stand looking at ads anymore though, after spending a long time only using browsers with adblockers and not watching TV. The way they try to get in your face and demand your attention is gross and obnoxious, and im no longer desensitized enough to just block them out.
