Ever so slight variations on the sound. The 600 ohm is best. Ohms is a measure of electrical resistance, generally the higher it is the more electricity it will take to drive a headphone to a nominal level. But it's not necessarily the case that an 80 ohm headphone will take the same amount as the same ohm rating from another manufacturer, or that say a 64 ohm from one company can't be harder to drive than an 80ohm from a different company as it's not the only determining factor.

Are the AKG K701 still in the higher tier of headphones? Do you need an amp to drive them? I want to upgrade from my K240 Studios to some other reference headphones

A phone, an old laptop, an old desktop, a shitty stereo without an actual amp, an mp3 player etc.

Your pc should be able to drive the 600's, albeit not very loudly. That said if you're using dt880's on motherboard audio you'll want a sound card or DAC regardless of which version you get.

If the Sony MDR-v6 and by extension the MDR-7506 have been around since the 70s, surely the nauseating treble peak is a known issue. If so, how the hell do they continue to be ubiquitous?

I currently plug my headphones right into the computer (ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0) but I also have a stereo receiver (old Pioneer 5.1) connected to that computer via optical out. Any chance I'd get any improvement plugging the phones into the receiver?

I could (and will) try it myself but I'm just wondering if there are generally differences in quality here because I may well lack the hearing to tell a difference

They're really good for the money and don't need an amp, doesn't suffer from the impedance related issues that affect the HD558/HD598 (and HD555 as well). It's also flatter than the AD900x.

It's a high impedance headphone with not that large power draw. If you get the volume you need, your amplifier is driving them properly. Xonar, on-board, smartphone or whatever else. High impedance is an easy load for the amplifier.
