Would it be better to buy Xiaomi Mi5:
>sealed, with chinese factory ROM
>opened, with global ROM

My head isn't inside of my ass, so I should be able to flash other ROMs by myself, right? Or are there some difficulties specifically in doing that with Mi5?
>>

Got the i7+ to review. Love it, still need to finish the note 7 vs i7+ video. Go for it if you have the money, definitively loving the wallpapers too
>>
Thanks to the anon last thread.

In deciding between the Redmi Note 4 PRO or the Redmi 3s PRO and the $50 difference in price (and preference of smaller formfactor)

I understand the X20 is twice as fast as the 430 which is very cool... But how important is the difference between the two in terms of everyday use outside of gaming?

What would you prefer? The i7 or the i7+? And for what reason? Is the i7+ okay to handle and is the different camera worth the comfort difference? What difference is there in the specs? A lot of people say it has a gigabyte more than the regular i7 of RAM. Is that true? I am about to pre-order tomorrow and I can't decide.
>>
>>56491603
Get it unsealed. They don't just install the ROM, they also do quality control. I've read a few horror stories about people ordering it sealed, and it arriving completely broken.
>>
>>56491603
Don't buy sealed box, you might receive a DOA unit and you'll need to flash another rom anyway.

Buy the global rom version and verify that it's actually legit afterwards.
V8.0.2.0.MAAMIDG (MIUI8) is the latest official one.

>>56491679
You won't notice any lag on both in casual/everyday use. for 3d games and heavy stuff the RN4 would be better, even with less RAM.
But if you prefer 5" the R3s is still very good.

Mi5 is obviously the best of both worlds if you can afford it.
>>
Why Mi5 over Oneplus 3?
>>
A question that will decide if I get an iPhone Plus or Note 7: Can I really not watch fullHD videos on YouTube in iOS when I'm connected only to LTE without jailbreak?

I like watching good quality vids and streaming lossless audio but I've heard iOS prevents doing this on LTE connection. I live in EU and have unlimited speedy LTE so this limitation makes no sense. I don't want to watch grainy shit in public places and definitely don't want to connect to open WiFis.
>>
>>56491697
i7+, the camera is way better, the $120 difference is worth in my opinion, probably my only complain is the camera bump and the fact that you don't get an amoled display so you can't really enjoy the new black model, don't get me wrong, the screen is probably one of the best in the market but if you are used to amoled you will notice the difference.

>Specs differences
1334 x 750 for the i7
1920x1080 for the i7+
2gb for the i7
3gb for the i7+

In my opinion the 256gb model isn't worth it and I will leave the 256gb option for the ipad pro. About colors jet black looks amazing, but makes it look a little less "Applelike". A lot of games and apps aren't optimized yet so I can't give you an exact review on that

What to do if a phone model seems to come in Qualcomm and MediaTek chipsets?

Or, should I be looking up phones via their chipset brand first, then model number, then community support (roots, ROMs, etc)?
>>
>>56492739
if you plan on installing custom roms dont go for MediaTek phones. they also seem to eat up more battery. i would check if its compatible with my carrier before anything else.
>>
>>56492841
Assume the carrier support isn't a problem. I'm learning this stuff and carrier support is the least of my concerns.

I apologize, but this is my first smart phone so I've been googling and going in circles. Within the past day I ended up softbricking(?) my simple Alcatel OT 5017B (apparently rebranded Pixi 3 4.5 4G) via some combination of trying to install SuperSu over Kingo Root, and Kingo wasn't having it.

In the middle of SuperSu applying, if I recall it failed once before but I tried again (without rebooting) but it still got denied root, I thought instead of waiting it to die gracefully I'd just reboot now and try other methods. Apparently this was the wrong idea, resulting in the problem. It hangs on the Alcatel/powered by android screen, never reaching the default carrier screen and thus the desktop. I can access the useless recovery mode (reboot, nuke data/factory reset, nuke cache, view logs) with the first three options doing nothing. I even left it on the hang while sleeping, didn't budge.

However, in my attempts I've slowly learned more about the phone/phones in general (silver lining) and that it was a Qualcomm, so now I've given up on the MTK drivers and SPFT after several hours of wondering why.

I'd prefer to salvage the phone, since it's fine enough for me, but most of the support for it seems to be on a model that uses MediaTek. It's currently pretty cheap where it can be found, but is there anything I can do with this one?

Also does nuking data clear my personal files like logins if I want to toss it?

Why is my phone's recovery menu so bare, because it's cheap garbage?
How common is it to lack actual recovery options like I saw on other (seemingly stock) recovery menus?
Why, in accordance with lack of the above two questions, does it lack proper tools to enable these from recovery (like ADB)?

Those are the two choices she can get for her low budget plan. $0 down. Both choices aren't the greatest but they are budget phones and she's on a budget plan. >contract on low end phones
This is a terrible, terrible idea. She could get a phone that's a thousand times better and spend way less by breaking out of that contract. Nevertheless...

That LG a good third more battery in Amp\hour but being a Mediatek chipset it's probably slower, more power hungry and won't be getting any updates ever, so whatever software flaw you have, you'll be stuck with it, which is a major issue if it doesn't have stock android but sports one of LG's horrid skins. Also, marked as 240 EUR out of contract on GSMArena. Are you fucking kidding me, LG? There's 100$ chinkphones that are miles better than that.
Get her the G4 Play. It's the worst Moto G, but it's still a Moto G. Solid choice on the low end.

>>
>>56495025

Without sounding disrespectful the details regarding the contract and WHY it must be that way aren't up for debate. I know the disadvantages and tried to explain but no dice. She just wants to "go and get something and leave without dropping a dime." I know you could buy a past Gen flagship for a fraction of cost and get a decent plan but she doesn't want to put money forward.

So.. Gun to your head, which of the two are better and yes this is for N.A. Thanks.

I'm looking for a case for when I get the 7. I currently use a Tech21 case for my iPhone 5C that I got back in 2014, but I find it a bit bulky (even though it does do a good job at protecting from drops, which seem to happen at least once every couple months for me.)

Currently I am looking at Peel, since they're pretty thin and at least provide scuffing protection. What other cases should I consider looking at? (Thin would be a plus.)

So are we finally agreeing that the new iPhone is actually good?

coming from someone who uses an LG G4, seeing those comments from all those app devs saying "we're actually going to be using the wide color gamut" and actually seeing it implemented throughout the entire system in a meaningful way instead of just fucking force enabling it like they do on the G4 which just makes every color extremely oversaturated just pisses me off. Apple is the only phone company as of yet to actually get wide color gamut right.

I have a 250-300$ budget to buy a phone. I've been thinking about getting one of those chinkphones, but thing is I need a phone that will last at least a few years. It is mostly because here 'chinese' phones rarely get replacement parts, so it'd be a hassle (and very expensive) to buy parts from USA or something if somehow the charger port / screen stops working properly.

So yeah, taking that in consideration... Should I go and get one or do you guys have another rec?

I flashed the latest version Cyanogenmod onto my Nexus 5 recently. First time using custom roms.

Sometimes when I listen to music via headphones and change the tile on the lock screen, the app will freeze for a moment, then mute all audio for every music player.
The only way to fix this is a reboot.

What can I do to fix this?
It's really annoying because it occurs completely randomly. Also, the stock music app doesn't even allow to change tracks by holding volume buttons, even though that option is enabled in the settings.

Definitely get the SE.
Not even being snarky, the SE is simply the best compact smartphone out there, and I fucking hate iOS.
The only complaints about it are the OS because of it being really locked down (no file manager, no microSD support, basically nothing making it a productive OS in the same ways as desktop OS's), but if you're "not into smartphones" as you put it, and just want a simple device to make good pics, makes calls/texts and check social media, then nothing currently beats the SE.
It might be expensive depending on your country though.

There's really nothing new from the 6s other then the camera (which it's only the new good one on the plus only). Aside from x100 better screen, longer battery life, and a camera that eats that shit on the 1+3 for breakfast. Native android, first to get updates, customer support, roms.

The one+ has only a newer processor and more ram, and nobody is going to use that shit anyway. Every single review shows the difference in performances to be unnoticeable. OnePlus also has a non-existent customer service.

Hello friends. I currently have an iPhone 6. I upgraded two years ago from a Galaxy S3 and found that I really liked the iPhone for its simplicity. I liked the customization of an Android phone, and it wasn't confusing for me, but I'm just not the type of person who has everything in their life on their phone, which seems to me what Android really excels at.

Anyhow it's time to upgrade and the iPhone 7 looks like dogshit. I don't necessarily mind a smaller phone, so the iPhone SE is potentially on the table, but its meh camera and terrible screen resolution kinda turn me off a bit.

I've also been looking at the Galaxy S7 Edge. I really like the edged display and from what I hear the resolution and colors basically beat any other phone out there.

Anyhow, now for my question. When I first got my Galaxy S3 I loved it, by the time I was ready to upgrade to the iPhone 6 my Galaxy S3 was a piece of shit that was incredibly slow and laggy. Apparently this happens to all Android phones (mostly Samsung) over a long period of time, or so I'm told. I hear this is mainly due to all the shit awful apps that Samsung installs onto the phone, touch-wiz or something? Will this eventually happen if I get an S7 Edge? Is there anything I can do to prevent it?

TL;DR - Trying to decide between iPhone SE and S7 Edge. Samsung seems to be notorious for having their phones deteriorate into laggy messes after a long period of time. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Also as a bonus question, I like to keep a tempered glass protector on my phone screens just in case. They've come in handy before. Is it still possible to have one on the S7 Edge since it's curved?

Buy the OnePlus 3, the 6GB RAM will ensure it will not degrade in smoothness. Currently the best performing device out there
>>
>>56502961
Man, those look beautiful. huge, not sure if I would be able to hold the k10000, but beautiful nontheless.
>>
>>56502945
It's shit quality alluminium with a bad design though. You can't deny that. OP3 is just as bad with that garbage pentile screen, but at least it'll endure being sat on.
>>
>>56503099
The main appeal of the S7 Edge to me is the curved screen. Scrolling up in this thread it also looks like someone posted a picture of the OnePlus 3's display and it looks terrible, especially for VR
>>
I think i want the iphone 5s which is 200 now on boost mobile. Is it a good deal?
>>
>>56503044
Aside from the 3.5mm port (which might be a dealbreaker for some), the phone itself looks fantastic.

A10 will blow competition out of the water as usual, display has improved, camera massively improved, and god that Jet Black looks delicious.
>>
alright you lads convinced me to cancel my OnePlus 3 order

When is the Xiaomi Mi5s out then? How much roughly for a 32/64g version?

Thanks
>>
>>56503063
Get a phone - any phone - with solid community support and you'll have fanmade ROMs for years and years. There's a slew of decent choices in that sense - from a few Xiaomeme offerings (more on the budget chink side though), to Sony phones (which all seem to have pretty lively developers), to the ZTE Axon 7, to the obvious Nexus phones, to OnePlus phones, the Nextbit Robin, and the HTC10. Just choose your preferred set of features and go with that. Shit like the IR blaster, or a microSD slot, or a good camera being your priorities will eventually cross out all but a device or two.
>>
Ok /spg/, I've felt for the chink meme, got a LeMax2, used a mod of the stock ROM for a week or two, bit now it's time, where the hell I can get a CM13/14 ROM? XDA only has a Spanish guy's shit tier shit.
>>
How bad is the Redmi note 3 pro camera? iPhone 5 level? 5s level? If its worse than the 5 I might just get a Nexus 5x.
>>
>>56502945
>the phone is metal
It's not. After the bend test he made a close analysis of the build, and the phone is not made of metal: it has a completely non structural metal back, but the entire phone is plastic on plastic with more plastic to keep it together.

>Aside from x100 better screen,
Unless you do VR, it's the same. Literally. You won't see a difference.

>longer battery life
They both get 4 to 5 hours of screen time on average. The 6P is a little better, yes, not something that will change the way you use your phone.

Know what changes the way you use your phone? 60% battery in 30 minutes, jackass.

>and a camera that eats that shit on the 1+3 for breakfast
They're in the same ballpark. The 6P looks a bit more natural. I've seen tests, it's not day and night difference, the OP3 has optical stabilization so it works better at night, the front facing camera is much better on the OP3.

>Native android, first to get updates, customer support, roms.
Yeah which usually means the faster phone, except it isn't. Android updates stopped mattering as much since Android 5, the system is pretty much complete and healthy nowadays, it's not like the days of Android 4 where getting updates was the difference between life and death, face it.

>Every single review shows the difference in performances to be unnoticeable.
It's about as large as the difference in camer quality, which is to say, not much BUT the OP3 will keep apps in memory for much longer, which makes for faster day to day usage, and it has the fastest fingerprint sensor on the market, by quite a margin compared to the 6P, especially since the 6P has the sensor on its back so it cannot even be unlocked while on a table.
And while 6gb of ram are just a ton of space to keep apps in memory now, they mean future proofing if you keep your devices for more than 3 years.

Also the OP3 is 5.5" with capacitive buttons, which are much better than on screen buttons that rob you of useful living space.

>The Nexus 6p is better than the One+ in every possible way.

PROS:
like 10% longer battery life
slightly better camera in plain daylight
gets updates first
dual tone flash
VR ready

CONS:
no OIS
no capacitive buttons
slightly slower
mediocre fingerprint sensor
very cheaply built
5.7 is too large for most people
heavier
3gb of ram while 4gb are standard on flagships, this will hurt it in the next year, given how fast the bloat is going

I'm not saying the 6P is a bad phone, just that it's underserving to be in the same price tag as the OP3, which is a better device and the best android device on the market in general. This gen of Nexus devices was a trainwreck, the 6P should sit at the 5X pricepoint, and the 5X should not exist entirely.

>>56503199
The pentile screen is a meme. It's still higher resolution than the LOL RETINA screens, you can't see single pixels.
It is a deal breaker for VR usage, and that's big, but if you don't use VR you will never see the difference.

>>

So i tried a new custom rom for my old LG phone because the stock android was laggy as all hell and after flashing it alongside the open gapps i found out that it doesnt have SuperSU installed or any app besides the bare mininum, i already put all my essential stuff on it like video/music player, gallery, manga reader, web browser, file explorer, adaway, youtube, sd maid pro, greenify etc and while it does have root and custom recovery it lacks said app, should i install it or do i leave the phone as it is?

I wanna keep all my passwords in an app on my phone for easy reference, would also like to be able to edit the list on my PC. Is there an app around I could use?

And before you ask, it happens to be the 5.1'' screen from the Galaxy S4 - although the phone itself is not an S4. Said screen has also failed me twice. Once it inexplicably broke it my pocket, and the other time it just went dead. Both were covered over warranty, but next phone I get it's probably going to be LCD just for that shit. Not worth the trouble at all.

Guys I have the original Moto G for 2 years now should I upgrade to G Play? All I know it has a better camera, how's the processor?
>>
Rooting the Moto G4 (regular, not plus): possible yet or no?
>>
>>56503374
I watched 1080p high quality movies on it without issues. It looks tack sharp, and I'm a photographer that is absolutely anal about picture quality.
In fact, the issues I have with the screen are its shit colour accuracy, which is not solved by RGB mode in the slightest, but it's a problem that all amoled screens have so I just enjoyed it for its quality and not for the accuracy.

When people see the screen they remark how beautiful it looks. I can't see a single pixel, I do agree QHD screens can look slightly nicer like on text stuff, but it's not a difference you actually notice until you stick your nose on the screen, and it doesn't matter unless you're using VR, especially not for "media consumption".

Mortal Kombat

PoGO, but only because its unoptimized as fuck, you need to go outside though, or risk a ban if you ever want to play it again

The latest Asphalt game iirc 8 without updates, again because of the lack of optimization, get it off some apk site or something

The thing with iPhone and and Google phone that I like is that I know these companies will have my back so to speak. I'm not sure about One Plus customer service/product support. If anything were to happen to my iPhone, i just go to the Apple store and they'll fic it or give me a new one. With one Plus it's a big hassle.
>>
>>56503786
Don't listen to me I'm evidently too happy with my new device.

But I don't see anything interesting in Android 7, and my Moto G was perfectly happy on 5.3, I didn't see anything interesting in 6 either.

All I can tell you about the OP3 is that the screen resolution issue has been blown out of proportion, I've watched Inside Out on it, from a good 1080p mkv, and I could see the single hairs on characters and no signs of pixel patterns that could distract my eye. That's good for me.

The best thing to do now is to wait for the new Nexus devices before making any choice.

That's a genuine issue, yeah. I've heard "good" things of OP support, like I know someone that broke his screen and the process was just "contact support, get estimate, send device" and in a matter of a week or two it was done.

So that should work okay, at least. They don't just leave you hanging to die.

But I agree it's a bigger hassle. It's one of the reasons Apple sells so well after all, they got physical stores you can walk into and do shit.
>>
>>56503911
No, it's just an overrated phone.
>>
Any recs for a $300 phone that'll work on GSM?
Kinda considering a zenfone 2 or oneplus 2 since I mostly use my phone for mobage and web browsing.
>>

>which is a better device and the best android device on the market in general.

the shilling is going too far
i also love how you completely avoided the support issue. nobody will refund or repair your shit, onePlus has virtually no customer service.

Also the camera on the 6p is way more than slightly better. The 6p still has the best camera on that range, even in 2016. OP3 picture/video quality and screen are abysmal.
>>
>>56503911
ZTE uses a shit samsung sensor unit that even samsung ditched because it's horrible. So the camera is worse.

Then the OP is sligthly faster, has the best charging tech on the market (yes, proprietary cable and charger, that can be a con - but it's still fast as hell on regular charge.) and has capacitive buttons and the objectively superior fingerprint scanner on the front that doubles as capacitive home button.

I personally think OP has the better software support, too, but that remains to be seen as both are new devices. I don't know what's the xda and rom support of the ZTE but OP3 has the bigger community for sure, and that can be a deal breaker in the future. On XDA there's already some testing going on with Nougat, for example, while the ZTE has not even half a page of people talking about it on the ROMs page.

It's neck and neck imho. If you genuinely care about audio, the ZTE is amazing. It stomps anything else on the market, being capable of enjoying music and movies with a really capable device is a night and day difference if you really care about it.
If you don't, I think the ZTE has really nothing interesting up its sleeve to counter the fact that the OP3 is faster, has more support, has a better button layout, the dash charge will change your way of using a phone and it has a much better camera.

Good specs, battery life and design, shitty stock rom, bloated with pointless apps you cant remove because theyre tied to vital stuff, useless "functionality" shit on it, youre just asking to get robbed, i would wait until good roms become available for it, something like CM13 or 14 because touchwizz is unbearable.

If you want a similar phone but less flashy go for the HTC 10, if you still want samshit go for the Note 4, all around a much better phone those two for a lot of reasons (removable battery, SD slot, fully unlockable, good custom roms, better camera than the 10, stylus, huge, looks classy, has every gimmick (acelerometer, gestures, fingerprint unlock) sans the samsung pay)

I had the same issue, but I was under the impression it was a hardware fault. I replaced the screen a while back and it works well now.

XDA has all the files you'll need. Using the tot file is a bit more tedious but a better way to restore to stock, I found.

Mini review of 5x

Pros:
>still the cheapest bang for your buck outright phone in Canada
>camera and bloat free Android is great
>constant Google updates fix """"problems"""" monthly
>good phone size for one handed use
>videos and text look great
>charging is good / 1-2 hours full 100% if you DON'T use the phone while charging
>upon fresh reboot, phone is the fastest device I've ever held
If rooted:
>easy to root / Pure Nexus ROM + Ex Kernel made my device faster and last longer battery wise
>no reboots necessary, always runs great

Cons:
>overpriced in Canada. Find a friend in the US to buy it for you. I made the mistake to buy it full price at $499, 32GB
>battery does 4hrs SOT tops, with no extensive apps like Pokémon GO or Snapchat
>gets hot as fuck. Slows down if it gets passed 45 degrees C.
>heat will destroy your battery, will not let the phone charge if you've pushed the 5x too much
>plastic build makes it feel cheap as hell Again, get this for the ~$250 US price tag to justify
If rooted:
>battery is still 4hrs SOT
>phone stays WAY cooler, not as many heat issues but Pokémon still kills it

tl;dr I liked it, esp coming from the 5 and didn't want to cash out $700. If in Canada, do NOT buy full retail price from the Google Canada Store. Go for a Newegg or some type of reputable retailer that will sell it to you for the US prices.
I ended up selling it for a decent $450.

An iPhone SE is just an ever so slightly faster 6S in the shell of a refined 5S, without 3D touch, a barometer, and with the same FaceTime camera as on the iPhone 6, all with a screen with the same pixel density. If you want that power in something you can use comfortably with 1 or 2 hands and prefer small phones, do it and don't look back.
