I'm looking for viable options for a cheap new computing device.

More or less I'm looking for something cheap that'll largely just be running Gentoo, and possibly Windows (with MSYS2, though I can't think of any reason why). Reading documents, etc. Beyond that it'll just be a light porn machine.

The first thing that comes to mind is a netbook. Something lightweight and preferably durable, but at the same time I don't like small screens or laptop keyboards. I don't really want to invest in anything like that. That makes me consider an ARM board, like the Odroid. I can see a lot more uses for that long term.

Any suggestions? I'm using a laptop from 2005 running XP,and just updated mintty. Now it's giving me kernel32.dll entry point bullshit, won't start, have to setup an environment and build the new version with that, see if it works, if it doesn't build the old version. Etc. Fuck all that shit. If I update something it ought to have a high probability of just working, within reasonable bounds. The fuck around is an unnecessary waste of time.

Chromebook! Buy the Rockchip versions.

Libreboot support and no CPU microcode. They're the most open Laptop you can buy today.

Run gentoo no problem on them.

Very wary of Google. Looking into them now though.

That's probably the most obvious shill I've seen on here.

Just get an old Thinkpad, a lot of people like the X200 and the T420.

Soon I'll be going to some places where laptops people have thrown out end up, on their way to however they're handled (or not handled) for rare earth metals, cadmium, etc. That's where I got what I have now, some number of years ago. Actually I was literally paid to take it off their hands.

Aside from that, where would one look for an old thinkpad? (Preferably borderline free)

Have fun doing the gentoo dance, I got my machine in the comfiest ever state with it. I really mean it. Zero loadavg with a running desktop is dope.
You plan on using distcc or cross compile with that light a hardware though, don't you?
Also, if you'd like x86, those AMD APU netbooks from a couple of years ago are quite fun. Got one with a C60, it even plays muh games somewhat.
