>“It was holding us back from a number of things we wanted to put into the iPhone,” Riccio says. “It was fighting for space with camera technologies and processors and battery life. And frankly, when there’s a better, modern solution available, it’s crazy to keep it around.”

>The 3.5-millimeter audio jack has been headed to its inevitable fate for some time now... In the end, it was simple math that did the audio jack in, a cost-benefit analysis that sorely disfavored a single-purpose Very Old Port against a wireless audio future, some slick new cameras, and the kind of water resistance that anyone who has ever dropped an iPhone in the toilet has long wished for.

>“The idea that there’s some ulterior motive behind this move, or that it will usher in some new form of content management, it simply isn’t true,” [Schiller] says. “We are removing the audio jack because we have developed a better way to deliver audio. It has nothing to do with content management or DRM — that’s pure, paranoid conspiracy theory.”

Mobile devices don't belong with wired accessories, and they're not meant for audiophiles. Take off your tinfoil hat and embrace the future, /g/.

By not giving users an analog output as an option and keeping the signal chain digital, you can start to enforce copy protection on audio like what is already done with HDMI (HDCP) and disallowing analog output on protected content unless it is degraded to a much lower but acceptable (to the content owner) quality.

That's more of a problem for Twitch/Amazon to handle on its own. Apple isn't in the business of policing other companies' services unless they get out of control, in which case it can enforce App Store rules and pull the app.

The audio output that customers use is irrelevant to all this.

TRS (tip, ring, sleeve), has been around since 1880. TRRS, the 4-conductor variant for smartphones with stereo output and a mic in, has been around since 1998. It has been a Universal Standard on every form of device using headphones for output. Way to fuck things up, Apple! Now we'll have to buy a Lightning - TRS adaptor and remember to carry it around. So is this thing actually properly water resistant, with an IP rating? Are Apple saying that they're unaware that water resistant audio jacks are a thing? My phone is IP68 and has a headphone jack (with no flap).

If Apple really cared about battery life and the camera they'd simply make the phone a couple millimetres thicker. Shit, the thing already has a goofy camera bump, they should just make it even.

absofuckinglutely. I held onto my craphone for years until it actually fucking died because no new phones on the high end had physical keyboards. That was the best shit ever.

Removing things that work for no fucking reason when an objectively better standard in almost all ways does not exist is "progress' for the sake of it, or at worst milking consumers. In this case it's both.

>If a modern phone shorts out, it's most likely due to the headphone jack. That's the only jack that's always powered.

Why do some of you have this autistic need to force other people to bend to your whims by playing to hyperbole? Are you some fucking child who can't go 5 minutes without being stimulated by something new and shiny regardless of if it works better or not? I like physical keyboards, and for playing games via emulator (which surprisingly it was able to do) it remains the superior option. Not mention everyday typing which was the primary function. I could type much faster and with less error on a physical keyboard. If there were more powerful phones with physical keyboards, I'd have gladly upgraded.

Why get rid of something with an important and superior aspect if nothing better exists just because it is old?

If you dont like that Apple removed the headphone jack, dont buy an iPhone 7.
Ranting on the internet and calling Apple retarded etc is nothing but a waste of your own time. Apple is a very large corporation and moves like this are planned and calculated well in advance. They made this decision for a reason. It may well be a very selfish one(money), but it is their decision to make. As a consumer you can chose to buy their products or not. Apple is willing to take that gamble. Settle down and wait and see if it was a good decision or not....hint: it will be in the long run, thats how large companies play the game.

Confirmed for underage and not remembering that YES, BOTH TECHNOLOGIES WERE, IN FACT, DYING WHEN THIS HAPPENED. There was an "uproar" by normies that were surprised by it, and unaware that this technology was dying, but it wasn't nearly on the level of REMOVING SOMETHING THAT IS COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY ACTIVE BY EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PERSON IN THE WORLD. There has been ZERO indication that standard headphone jack use is on the way out or even decreasing in popularity among anyone. The fact that Apple is doing this shit is 100% about control and an attempt to subvert the industry, not simply accepting an inevitable trend.

Fucking children, I swear. Can you NOT be brainwashed by bullshit technology trends and think for yourselves for once?

It's not the same, Floppy's were genuinely dead and only used for rewritability, e.g. people putting .doc essays on them and carrying them between home and college. The CD/DVD drive was still used but had workarounds. I mean, things don't even run off of CD, they just required the CD in the drive to startup sometimes.

The removal was also only for the Laptop, it remained on your main PC. This? This is just removing shit people use and genuinely need. I know the jack is an old standard but it's a bullet that must be bitten, because there is no alternative yet.

CD/DVD drives were replaced by internet transfer and USB storage. The headphone jack has no replacement except adapters, which are more annoying than just having the headphone jack.

If all you have is shitty pack in earbuds then maybe it doesn't matter to you either, but having to use wireless, which require charging regularly (up to 5 hours life, lmao) and getting worse sound quality to boot is not a replacement for my $300 headphones just plugging in to the port.

I begrudgingly use the touch screen. If what he said about needing to remove it in order to focus on enhancing the phones specifications was true you would see noticeably higher specs.Facts are that the iPhone 7 Plus is a flag ship phone with a premium price tag, and only 2GB of ram; something that even lower end devices have. The non-plus variant of the iPhone 7 doesn't even have a decent screen resolution.

This jack is being removed is purely for financial gain. If your paper thin phone breaks they can make you buy a new one, if you lose the adapter to connect your headphones into their proprietary connector they can sell you a new one at a ridiculous price, and now they have a fancy new peripheral they will try to up sale to you too. Judging by the quality of apple earbuds of the past these wireless 'AirPods' will be uncomfortable to wear and offer mediocre audio quality at a marked up price.

There are many phones that outperform the 6S, what are you talking about?

I will give credit for the CPU on the 7 however as the A10 Fusion on the 7 plus is a solid quad core CPU, but again many flagships at similar price points still have higher specs than the 7 plus even factoring that in. For example the Samsung Galaxy S7 also has a quad core CPU, a much better GPU, and double the ram of the 7 plus.

To be honest, I enjoy iOS almost as much as I enjoy Android. They're both very good OS's. A completely water resistant phone is attractive. I can deal with bluetooth headphones, so that's a non-issue.

The issue with iPhones is price. I'd just much rather stick with my OnePluses since their prices are much more reasonable and they have hardware decisions I'm more comfortable with in their price range.

What I do like is good battery life, a good screen (1080P or better, ~5"), and a good current-gen processor. Expandable storage is a massive plus. The OnePlus 3 offers all of that at a fraction of the price of any new iPhone, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. Oh. And a headphone jack that works with current cheap headphones.

If/when I get a stable income and manage to live (mostly) debt-free, then I'll consider buying prettier phones that offer little more utility than my current one.

Are these people fucking retarded?

It does literally the same thing as lightning.

Every fucking thing.

Just look at Square

And all the phones that use 3.5mm jacks to charge.

What are these people on about?

>>

Nah nigger, you don't realize whats happening, the new flagship android will have the jack, but not the next gen, its like that, apple does it, and i doesn't matter how utterly fucking stupid it is, people will copy it across all platforms.

3.5mm jack is kill.

I know only one person with wireless headphones, and guess what? He never fucking uses them because, in his words, "they're shitty compared to my other ones", referring to his WIRED headphones. Barely anyone, not even applefags use wireless headphones right now. So this meme about looking like a "caveman" or "outdated" with wired headphones is people being willfully retarded.

Anon, just no. There were plenty of better things to place there and Apple did exactly that.

What's the advantage of a removeable battery? Also how's the audio on android phones?
>>

I don't think wired headphones are going anywhere soon. Wasted battery life using bluetooth and wasting time charging them. Hopefully the Android companies won't follow that bullshit.

>Tim Cook walks to the stage wearing Steve Job's clothes.

>For 10 years we have been giving you a device that started a revolution. A PC in the palms of your hands that can connect you to the rest of the world. Taking high resolution photos with the tap of a button. Steve Jobs envisioned a world where the power of the Internet could be in the palm of your hand.

>crowd claps

>Today I will announce a device, a device that will continue the #revolution. A device that Steve would love. Are you excited!? Cook yells

>crowd jeers and a few whoop whoops with a few laughs from the crowd.

>Iam proud to announce the Jobz phone. Picture comes up with a iPhone 1.

>crowd yells and cheers

>a smirk comes across Cooks face. The Jobz phone will have a core CPU with a powerful ram. A user interface that has been simplified. You can now plug in a 8gb micro sd card. There are now two lighting ports which you can now put in two chargers for a super fast charge. The Jobz phone will cost $899.

But they make you upgrade in two to three years due to lag. Each OS update shits on previous models. Android is filled with so many solutions to issues that OS updates are not needed as badly as iOS updates.

You are just pretending to be retarded right? Check out the SoC and the flash storage on the iPhone, they blow anything android has by miles.

iPhone does have less ram than android flagships but that is not really all that matters, specially considering how much less ram iOS uses compared to android.

I had to use my phone for typing more regularly, I would buy a phone with keyboard.

Easykeyboard is fina for messages, but typing anything long is still pain in the ass.
