>no 7" netbook with high res screen, big phat battery, loads of i/o and spec equal or better than a 12" macbook for half the price

jdimsa.

Surely I don't have to get a tablet for tiny computing?

they're useless. Desktop software is not optimized for such low resolution/dpi

11 shitbooks are 250-200 dollars. just get one of those.

ive had two and like them

dpi is the problem, you're right.

How about 10"? Then you end up in tablet only territory
>>

How about those cheap Windows tablets? Many come with keyboard,so you can use them as a mini laptop. I don't remember the one I was looking at the other day, but the tablet locked into the keyboard half, so you could actually use it on your lap without things flopping around. Though, trying to look for that one, discovered pic is now $40. I nearly bought one when it was $100 earlier this year.
>>
>>56481878
why? 7" is too small to have a proper keyboard, but too big to be pocketable or comfortable for thumb-typing

just get one of those 10" transformer tablets or an 11" netbook for your kawaii computing needs

the "keyboard" is a digitizer
>>

>>
>>56482188
get a dell mini 9, they're like $50 on ebay, durable+fanless, and they're dead simple to hackintosh (i have one running snow leopard)

surprisingly, osx actually runs pretty smoothly considering the shitty atom hardware! the only caveats are the wimpy battery life and strange keyboard

Personally though I'm more curious if Amazon is going to update their $50 tablet to be more powerful.

Ok, here are the problemes:
>screen less than 12''
>fat ass bezels
>screen is not 4:3 retina
>weirdly positioned trackpoint
>not a convertible tablet for touch controls and digitizer productivity
>>
>>56481878
>Surely I don't have to get a tablet for tiny computing?
Actually, you do. Netbooks basically aren't a thing anymore because it turns out they're not really that good, especially 7" ones. The keyboard's impossible to touch type on, which means it offers no advantage over typing on a tablet screen, and is more awkward to use when standing up. People who needed a physical keyboard and expansion ports were better served by ultrabooks such as a MacBook Air, and people who needed smaller and more portable than that were better served by a tablet. Netbooks were that awkward worst of both worlds solution.
>>
>>56481878
Blue background board asshole! No porn.

I'm assuming here, because pic made my dick diamonds.
>>
>>56481878
>CURRENT YEAR
Yes. Get a fucking tablet for tiny computing, you luddite. There are many BT keyboard options and if you need, you can log into a remote server to do some real work using Android.

Why would you want that carpal tunnel torturing garbage whose time has long passed?

Recycle it so that we can make more tablets for cheaper.
>>
From what I remember: If you go below 10, keyboard has to be miniaturized. And thats a big problem.

Also Laptop marked tends to be pant on head retarded in most cases
>OEM standard part laptops with questionable internal parts
>Gigantic THICK bezels
>768p 16:9 screen
>2 hour battery life on all the laptops, regardless of model or type
>Only Enterprise/Ultraslim laptops breaks this trend
>>
>>56481878
>7"
12" is small enough. those are so small that they are unusable for almost everything.
>>
>>56482180
Too lazy to pull it up again.
Go to officedepot.com and look in the tablet section. I think Craig is the brand name.
>>
>>56481878

>>
>ITT: People with such poor eyesight that they can't use a 7" screen.

I read ebooks on my fucking 4.5" phone.
>>
>>56484851
it's not the screen size, it's that a 7" keyboard is too small for touch typing and too big for thumb typing
>>
>>56481878
I have a 11" netbook from 2014 and its pretty ok. I don't really notice the resolution since its still pretty decent dpi compared to desktop. The only thing that sucks is the eMMC drive is shitty and can't be replaced with a ssd. Also what the fuck do you need loads of I/Os on a netbook?
>>
>>56481878
Why not instead of going for borderline impractical systems we launch a well deserved bezel genocide?

This 13'' ultrabook I'm using is more bulk-ass than my fucking 16 year old ThinkPad 600E where it counts.
>>
>>56482269
Still so mad that I threw out my mini 9 rather than bothering to repair it... That keyboard is a fucking nightmare though. Just got an x100e ThinkPad for $54, running WindowMaker LIve on it, it's like a 'NeXTBook'.

>tfw selling a 2gb HDD netbook

>2. fucking. gigabyte. hdd.
>sold for $250 in 2010
>2gb

lol. sorry but until theres a specifically netbook OS, it simply wont do.

was it xubuntu? wtf was that os called? i got rid of it, and desu, regretted it. the original eeepc OS was pretty fuckin goat tier, but immediately they phased it out for bloatware.
>>
>>56483223
>Also Laptop marked tends to be pant on head retarded in most cases
Not pants on head retarded. A little bit dumb, but not pants on head retarded.
>OEM standard part laptops with questionable internal parts
>Gigantic THICK bezels
>768p 16:9 screen
What most people really want is cheap, and that's how to do it cheap.
>2 hour battery life on all the laptops, regardless of model or type
A) cheap, B) 90% of laptops spend 90% of their time being used plugged in, so most people don't much care if the battery only lasts a couple of hours.
>Only Enterprise/Ultraslim laptops breaks this trend
And that's the market for people who want/need something better than the cheapest shit.
>>
>>56485482
desu, id rather go back to this shit than the macbook air im on. those lightweight os's really add a new dimension to the hardware youre using. if there were an air version of OSX, id be more happy than the el capitan nonsense i have to deal with on this light ass machine.

>>
>>56485482
My parents got one when they went traveling. I'm not sure if the OS that originally shipped on it even had a name; it was a custom distro. I think most of the reason they started shipping them with Windows XP is that everyone kept wiping their OS and installing Windows because it's what they already knew, so they just gave up and said "fine, have it with Windows."

It is actually a shame that they didn't stick to their guns on their own OS; MS dictating restrictions on maximum hardware specs for a cheap OEM license for Windows on netbooks is part of what held netbooks back from evolving.
>>

I used a tablet as my main computing device for 2 years. The only thing it was better at was being able to walk/pace around and write my shitty programs without getting fat and diabetic but using a keyboard with one completely defeats the point of that.
>>
>>56488981
>>56489036
If I could get a real operating system on one, I'd consider going back to using one full time with a part time keyboard.
>>
>>56489073
these things run full-on windows. if you're the type of elitist who thinks windows isn't a "real" operating system (when it's really just that you don't like it) then get a 64 bit tablet so you can boot a linux distro
>>
>>56481878
Honestly the reason these things get fucked is that a mouse makes using a computer/tablet a hundred times easier, and it's hard as shit to use either while on the go.

What needs to happen to make netbooks a thing is it needs like a pop up joystick or some shit to use as a mouse(or like the thinkpad button shit or a blackberry)

I actually just use an old Bold(it has standardized bluetooth controls from the failed tablet) as a bluetooth remote/mouse for my tablets.
>>
>>56489118
You caught me. Last I looked into touch support for linux, it was pretty shit and useless though, is it any better now?

Still using an Aspire One as my easy carry machine, with a nice light distro on it. Never going to be fast but all I want it for is writing. Syncs with my other systems perfectly. Great for its purpose. Would never use it as a general use machine though.

I love my little lenovo ideapad 100s

It's cheap ($200), insanely light weight and portable, powerful enough for programming and shitposting on the go, comfy keyboard and decent battery life. What more do you need?
>>
>>56491079
They should call it Intel™ "Display Operator" and not Graphics.

It is totally misleading.
>>
>>56481878
Maybe you can help. I'm looking for a small laptop (i already carry around 15" work computer) for personal use. I'd like 12" max but I don't want an atom/pentium/celeron/tegra processor (also want to install os x). Don't want a tablet because I want to to dock it to mouse/kb and screen so need usb/hdmi

I want to keep it under £400

I know i'll probably get recommended an older thinkpad but they're so bulky and heavy they don't really work.

Am I dreaming? Must be something from a couple of years ago that fits the bill. I guess I should just get a second hand air though right?
>>
>>56488981
Keyboard cases are neat and all but it's still undeniably inferior to an actual notebook.

>>56491079
An iGPU is more than any netbook needs.
>>
>>56488981
If the keyboard is separate, it really is way more awkward than a netbook. The point is to have a "palmtop", for which it needs to be attached by an actual hinge. I think a lot of people in this thread are looking for a palmtop in order to have the handheld convenience of a tablet, but without having to deal with a shitty touch keyboard - that's a very legitimate use case, especially for someone like a sysadmin.
