Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

You just partition and format the flash drive and install the system onto it then you simply boot off FD rather than HDD, I have FreeBSD setup like that and it's working just fine but I had to manually adjust something post-installation, don't remember what though.

Problem solved. Plex is the culprit. After stopping the service, the connections disappeared and reappeared upon restarting the service.

Why would Plex connect with google? There's already a connection that goes to plex.tv

Three possibilities:
1) It needs some Google service to make some feature work.

Okay I have managed to fuck up my terminal.

While screwing around with the profile settings I have found a tab which was about running commands. So I thought that this is the place where I can set a command thati want to run on starting the terminal. Therefore, I have putted

Now the terminal is fucked and I cannot open it. I tried to reset it by deleting the /.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal folder but is does not exists only the .gconf folder.

What shall I do?

I'm not shitting on average people, and I hope that libre hardware becomes more accessible over time, just like GNU/Linux has. I'm not wishful thinking, I'm just saying that *ease of access* and *cheap price* aren't the primary reasons to get libre hardware. This. Also, X60 thinkpads are rediculously easy to libreboot, no tools required, and cost next to nothing. Just buy a $10 atheros wifi chip and you are fully functional. Yeah the hardware is old, but so what? Basic computing can be done on anything these days.

Then you have ebay and a few others places that strait up sell libreboot hardware if you can't do it yourself for some reason. $200-800 depending on the model and the specs. Not cheap, but not out-of-sight expensive either.

And before someone says "lol you can't do shit on libre hardware with a libre distro," let me tell you that's completely wrong. I run Parabola (libre arch) and do all my personal and professional computing on my T400 as a software entrepreneur. The next generation of great ideas is coming on libre.

I am trying to install Mint on my PC along side my current W10. The problem is that Mint cant see the partition that i made for it (30GB). At first i made it an unalocated space(no luck there), then tried making it into ntfs(still no luck),fat32(still nothing), even tried Ext4, I wont see anything other than the flash im using. Formating my whole drive is a no no, cuz i need windows for other shit and files ofc, and i cant boot from CD cuz its giving me some errors that i couldn't fix ( its probably that bug on Gigabyte motherboards). Read 2 pages of google and still no success. Help me ^^

It should be ext4 at least. You can't use ntfs or fat 32 for a linux filesystem. This is definitley user error, read up on linux and filesystems and try again.

>>
>>56484364
Also, I'll even hand hold you enough to tell you how to do it. Run a livecd of linux of your choice and open a root terminal. cfdisk, remove linux mint partition and create a new one from the free space. Make it the default option which is linux 83. then type mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda(the letter of your partition). Then install linux on it, preferably not linux mint because it sucks. That should do it.
>>
>>56484398
But why the FUCK would you make that a linux partition? It might be supported for reading and writing but it's not going to work properly.

The Arch stable repos are synced into Manjaro Unstable on a roughly daily basis. They sit there for 1-2 weeks before being declared stable and moving to Manjaro Testing. Then their test squad declares that stable enough to move to Manjaro Stable, about 3-4 weeks after the packages arrive in Arch Linux.

And this is the issue. There is four weeks until Manjaro users get package updates. That is still a lot quicker than a non-rolling release distribution I hear you say, but it ignores one of the fundamentals of a rolling release distribution. Security fixes come with a new software release. On a fixed-point release distribution, security fixes are backported into your out-of-date software versions to maintain stability. On a rolling release distribution, you just release the newer version of the software that comes with most security fixes (some backporting from the upstream VCS is required if a release is not made).

That means, Manjaro users are vulnerable to security bugs for around a month after Arch users are safe, unless of course the Manjaro Core Team monitors every package and pushes those with security fixes. How many packages in a distribution? Arch Linux has >6000 in its binary repositories. I suppose it is not impossible to monitor that many packages, unless of course your Core Team consists of three people. And given those three people provide five variants of their installation ISO (net install, XFCE, KDE, Cinnamon, MATE – with OpenBox and E17 on the way…) and provide a series of kernel packages and systemd… Things are looking bleak.

And so, Manjaro users are stuck with packages having security issues for a while. I’d assume the big ones get through quicker. Although their firefox package has not been updated to version 18 yet, which fixes 21 security issues – 12 of which are marked critical. In fact, firefox version 18 has not even made their Unstable repo as I am writing this. […]

What you didn't post is here:

>I’ll give credit where it is due. I had previously criticized Manjaro for holding back all package updates as this ignored security issues. But it appears that Manjaro has a new security policy, which means that packages that are rated as “Critical” or “High” in the Arch Security Advisories get pushed through their “quality assurance” process more quickly.

Been reading about this topic for some hours now, the fun thing here is: systems that simply drop microcode still run microcode in the cpu, so it wouldn't change anything if they wouldn't drop them. On the other hand, while a microcode update may close one security vunerablility, it also opens another one: unknown code, so it wouldn't change anything either if they just drop them.

My brain hurts.

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

How do you guys deal with trackers, redirect sites and other fucking garbage that's infesting the modern web?

For a long time, I used uBlock Origin and Ghostery. But given how much JS is sites today, it's fucking hard to deal with these tools because they break so damn much. I spend 10 min today trying to get some shitty 3 min video clip to load up properly. It had so many re-directs and dependencies on all kinds of ad/tracking/optimization shit. It's a fucking pain the ass.

So I installed a bunch of hosts files that block most of the domains and I've also been looking at dns logs to see where things are connecting to. I also wrote a little script to clean up dns logs so I can easily copy/paste domains into my hosts file and block them.

check out this screenshot... notice the fucking bullshit DNS redirects starting with somethign called mobsterbid.info and go down the list how many redirects there are. Fucking insane.

Anyway, blocking all this shit is hard work. How do you guys deal with it?

Try uMatrix. The defaults work really well and once you get the hang of it you can block and allow through exactly what you need.

For redirects, you can also use RequestPolicy, but it can be a bit of a pain at times.

Unfortunately there's no magic bullet solution. The more privacy or control you want, the more effort you have to compromise.

>For redirects, you can also use RequestPolicy, but it can be a bit of a pain at times.
Yeah, it takes 3 min to open any new page properly.... after youv'e fucked around with it trying to enable various things.

Worst thing about these tools is that you enable one domain, page reloads, and then that script loads ANOTHER 10 DOMAINS that you have to then manually figure out and see which of them will enable the content you want to see.

ANother thing I tried was DNSSEC with dnscrypt but I was getting all kinds of errors for sites whose domains couldnt be verified (shit like slashdot, arxiv etc). I had to disable it in configs.

1) is not in the US (stay from ones based in US and ones that are not in your country if your'e not from the US)
2) one that doesn't keep logs

you can look at the list that dnscrypt comes with and fine one that matches these requirements.

The fact you think your 50 layers of "encryption" and your absurd "routines" are going to prevent a fisa warrant and an NSL, is comical at best.

You're on 4chan, mook datamines way harder then moot did. All of your posts are being made in to a profile to send to the authorities or media companies.
If you're this paranoid, why are you on the opennet?

Germany is the most totalitarian, anti-privacy state outside of North Korea.

Source: am a Yuropoor.

On the whole it doesn't really matter where your servers are, but for the sake of it you should aim for countries like Panama, Norway or Switzerland.

stay away from germany.

basically, pick a country that's not friendly to a country your'e from... and pick a service with no logs.

that will minimize the chance of your logs ever getting subpoenas.

oh, and enable ephemeral keys as well.

This.

What do people want to play around with, different default shells / gui shells? different package management systems, init daemons? Other than the package managers and a few file location conventions what is there to do that couldn't be done on a different distro? (assuming the same class of distro, eg not tinycore or something for a specific use case).

>all those threads all over /g/

Why are those fucking apple events not in /biz/ ? Even the GPU threads you can find retards trying to argue over specs and the previous generations and how the GPUs will perform, but those smartphone threads are just pathetic.

Why the fuck mods permits this shit ? I'm pretty sure /g/ doesn't give a shit about the iphones in the end.
>>
>>56490734
>Why the fuck mods permits this shit ?
Probably because it's temporary and inevitable. It's easier to just filter those threads and/or ignore them. They'll subside over time.

Be thankful it isn't like pokemon on /v/, where it's a yearly event that people hype up ~3 months before it even begins. It was so bad that /v/ had to be split off into a separate Pokemon board.

as root use the vipw command
this will let you edit the passwd file, where usernames, groups, password hashes, home directories and the login shell are defined.
find your user account and insert fish there.
also you might need to edit your terminal emulator settings.

What settings exactly?
In HP device manager there is no speed/quality option.
And in Libre writer there are these options
Normal color
Normal grayscale
Draft color
Draft grayscale

Even when choosing the draft grayscale printing speed still matches that of normal grayscale.
Maybe it's other options that I've missed?

I use my Latitude E6410 for work purposes, with Arch Linux. Lately, xorg has been having... troubles. I can't quite pinpoint what's going wrong, as it happens very infrequently and on a seemingly random basis.

Now, before I go any further - I'd like to know of switching to Gentoo would be a better option. I do enjoy pacman, it's really easy to work with, but customization for flags set for building are enticing. One problem though, I'm unsure if compiling everything will take a millennia and a half...

But back on to the xorg problem with Arch:
Sometimes, there are "artifacts." These artifacts composite over certain programs for no reason, then disappear approximately 7 seconds later.

Furthermore, I am using i3. No gaps, just basic i3. I'd thought about switching to bspwm, though I'm not sure what differences it would provide. Would I be able to keep my i3bar config? It's just a basic ncmpcpp display, plus time in the corner, with my tabs over in the left, oriented on the top of the screen.

My main question, though:
Is switching to Gentoo worth it? I've worked with portage on a virtual machine quite a bit. Is it much different installing directly onto hardware?

People at /g/ and self proclaimed wizards do. People with a job will use whatever tools the company provides. The tools will most likely be some kind of IDE. But yes vim is useful to edit conf files in linux. You just need to learn archaic shortcuts like "yank".
>>
>>56493152
you should be able to do some basic editing in vim
wether you're going to use it as your main text editor is a different question, but when dealing with unix-like systems you usually have to use vim here or there for some basic editing.
