The only difference is not all the software people are used to is on the platform. It's trivial to install Linux. No normies largely didn't own computers back then. If you were a normie your IT department installed Windows 3.1 and office software you needed to do your job. I didn't know what the install disks did until I got curious one day and stuck it in and read it, then rebooted after forgetting it was in the drive.
