There's no reason to stop using Cinnamon as your daily driver. If you actually want to learn more about Linux's internal architecture and UNIX(-like) system administration, roll your own distro with LFS. Linux From Scratch exists only as documentation on how the various component that usually make up a Linux distro fit together. With it you can pretty much create a custom distro for any need.
