Stupid question: why hasn't .webm surpassed .gif as the standard? The immediate cause is pretty obvious: not all websites/programs support easy playback of .webm files, but what's the root cause?

people just don't give a shit
when you're doing something where quality, length and sound are necessary, YouTube and co. already exist and tend to do the job better anyway

.shitm
No all browsers support.
No hardware acceleration.

iPhone doesn't support .webm inline. No one is willing to drop support for ~30% of the mobile web, especially when iOS users generate more ad revenue[1].

Blame apple
Why can Chrome in Android play webm but not in iOS?
>>56449377
Apple won't let you. Chrome on iOS is just a reskin of Safari minus the JIT-compiler (Apple won't let you W^X memory).
>>56449375
Webm doesn't support safari not the other way around
>>56447679
.gif is already replaced, by .mp4

>Website support
>OS support (a lot of them don't even have thumbnails for webm)
>It's a full video format meaning you need more powerful programs to edit them. Most image editors can handle gif just fine.
I know gif is a video format but it's closer to just being a slideshow.
